Saints' Cortese a top earner

Basingstoke Gazette: Nicola Cortese Nicola Cortese

Saints were one of nine Premier League clubs to pay a seven-figure salary to their highest paid director in 2012-13.

Nicola Cortese’s wages of just over £1.96m made him the highest paid director in the top flight, according to a round-up of every club’s accounts compiled by the Guardian.

Behind Cortese, pictured, was Ivan Gazidis, Arsenal chief executive, who earned £1.825m.

The clubs that paid seven-figure salaries to their highest paid director, including bonuses in Norwich’s case, are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Norwich, Saints, Tottenham, West Brom and West Ham.

Worth every penny, took no siht from the press, or the bully boy big clubs, top man in my opinion, Southampton wouldn't be as great as we are today without his exceptional ruthless business choices, every decision he made was the correct one, except his last one, resigning!

Did a few things that I didn't agree with, but did so much good that we all turned a blind eye to it.

Only £2m? If he was being paid by results he should have got a lot more.
The Man with the Plan. Like him or loathe him, he delivered, and he was taking this club where it deserves to be.

Totally agree. NC made some incredible promises to us when he arrived......and he delivered. Will always be a Saints legend in my eyes.

Glad he has gone, over-paid ego-maniac.
There are thousands of people who would have been capable of returning us to the top flight with the Leibherrs backing.

Completely disregarded the history of our club, fell out with just about everyone who disagreed with him.

There is not another club who would treat their ex-players, fans, and employees with such disrespect.

Funny how he gets so much credit for getting us into the premier league, Nigel Adkins had nothing to do with it did he?

Higher paid than than directors of clubs who were winning european and domestic titles..???? he obviously thought he was worth it.. as I say EGOMANIAC. Deluded little banker.

Costa Gaz you usually write sense, but your comment above is truly the worst I have ever read on here. If it weren't for Cortese, Southampton FC would probably not exist. Certainly NOT as we know it now. (Look at Coventry, Leeds etc.) NC persuaded his trusted friend Liebherr to take a calculated risk on the Club. The Liebherr portfolio has won big-time. The players have won. We the fans have won...it really doesn't matter a toss about personal hurt feelings here (pathetic) football is a results-based industry, and NC produced, and more, and quicker than targeted. (Targets that other fans laughed at.) so if you are a critic of Nicola Cortese: grow up, grow a pair, and get over yourself!

Without cortese there would have been no liebherr's. Simple. We would probably be below pompey. Most important signing the club has ever made. You wouldn't see me raising an eyebrow if there were another zero on the end of that figure.
