Lambert unfit to start against Swansea

Basingstoke Gazette: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert could be forced to miss tomorrow’s penultimate game of the season at Swansea through injury.

Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino this morning confirmed that Lambert will not be fit to start the match at the Liberty Stadium after picking up a knock on his gluteus maximus.

The injury is not hugely serious but Saints will assess whether their big striker can potentially take a place on the bench or will be forced to miss out altogether.

“He had a knock on his gluteus maximus last week and we need to evaluate whether he will be to take part or not,” said Pochettino.

Lambert’s injury is likely to mean another chance to impress for youngster Sam Gallagher, while Morgan Schneiderlin remains touch and go to be ready.

“Morgan could make a return. He’s been training well throughout the week but we still need to assess him,” reported Pochettino.

“The players who are definitely out are Gaston Ramirez, Maya Yoshida, Kelvin Davis and Jay Rodriguez.

“We also have a doubt about Rickie Lambert and we need to assess him ahead of the game tomorrow.

“We will see maybe if he can come on as a sub or it may be better to not risk him and keep him on the bench.”

Bit worrying how limited we are up front, and I don't really class lambert as an out n out goal scorer. Big day for big Sam then.

This is an area we need some strengthening for next season, but I hope Gallagher does well and gets the confidence that strikers need to do their job well.

It might also not be a bad idea to give Rowe and/or McQueen a bit of time on the pitch.

Roy Hodgson has already stated that he has his preliminary 30 players from which to choose from, in his mind.

He said that "you don't become a good player over two games or a bad player over two games. I don't judge players on their last minute form, I'm judging them over the last two years"

So in that case I would rest Rickie tomorrow, so hopefully he will be fit for the last game of the season.

Being an optimist, I'll take the content, and know that if he's rested, it will be the right decision, and that they're big shoes to fill.

Enjoy that last away game of the season Saints fans, obviously a sell out for us, even with 'nothing' to play for, though I can't understand why Saints didn't pick the Villa game for the thank you gesture.

No pressure on us at all,as we can only finish 8th, so in my mind an exciting opportunity for young Gallagher to play 90 mins, and also for Reed, and perhaps one or two others ( Sims? Rowe?McQueen?etc) to get involved now.
I agree, I'd be worried if it was 10 games to go, but as our position is sealed, I'm chilled.

This is why we should have got another striker in after letting Osvaldo go. One word; naive. From what i've seen of Gallagher, he's hardly going to set the world on fire, bit like a wet **** actually, floating about and causing occasional nuisance to the opposition.

Luckily the game is practically meaningless and we've still managed our best ever season in the premiership! Eagerly anticipating more quality signings in the summer i.e. GK, CB & ST.

New tactic required obviously. Instead of 4-4-2 we should play 4-6. Adam, Spider, Steve, Jack JWP And Victor in midfield. Keep knocking it sideways to each other while slowly working forward and play to get corners. Then Dejan and Jose can have a field day scoring for fun. Now that Rickie isn't starting we will obviously get 4 or 5 pens to balance out all of those we haven't been given this season. I think Adam ,as captain, should take the first one and give Artur the other four as he is a bit down on the scoring stats.

isnt it strange that jose sets his team out like that and because they win he is called a tactical genius by the pundits, yet MP sets our team out to play our style with the belief that we are good enough and when we won it was because diverpool had a bad day! no credit given to MP.

Ha! I think they went to a flat back 10 after taking the lead.

Practising diving in the area to con refs into giving soft penalties most weeks also helps their cause, of course.

I have to disagree - Gallagher has the quality he's just a little inexperienced and nervous at times. The more game time he gets the better.

In fact if you look at his performances before and after the goal he got against Norwich, you can see the difference. Did him the power of good. I really wish he had stuck that one away against arsenal rather than spooning it over the bar - that would have done the lad wonders.

the lad needs time and he's getting it in the right way, as are all of our youngsters breaking into the team this season.

GK, CB & ST.[/p][/quote]I have to disagree - Gallagher has the quality he's just a little inexperienced and nervous at times. The more game time he gets the better. In fact if you look at his performances before and after the goal he got against Norwich, you can see the difference. Did him the power of good.
