BOUNTY whitewashed Greenacre 5-0 to win the Berkshire Squash Cup for the fourth year running.
On paper, it should have been a close encounter because the teams had finished second and third respectively in the Berkshire Premier League.
Bounty’s first victory was in the fifth-string contest between Bounty’s hard hitting Stu Purdy and Andy Hastings.
Purdy’s game plan was to keep his opponent pinned deep into the back corners, and only open up the court for more attacking shots after loose returns.
Hastings tried to match him in some punishing rallies, but Purdy’s superior speed, mobility and variation won the game 11-8, 11-3, 11-8.
The fourth-string match featured 16-year-old Cameron Ward of Bounty against nationally ranked over-45 Steve Dodridge.
Dodridge was a very tough player to face as he has a good range of holds, flicks and deception.
Unfortunately for him, Bounty’s Ward is one of the most athletic players in the Berkshire league.
His ability to retrieve Dodridge’s best shots and return them with interest prevented him from creating any rhythm.
Despite Dodridge’s best efforts, Ward always had something in reserve and won 11-6, 11-9, 11-7.
Third string Ben Thornton came into his match with Steve Brackley carrying a shoulder injury and started slowly as he loosened up.
After conceding the first game, Thornton stepped up the intensity of his play, volleying whenever possible and making good use of working drops to take the game 7- 11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.
With the match won, team captain and second string Stu Summers took to the court against Ben Burbank.
The Bounty player limited Burbank’s attacking options as he dominated the T to record a comfortable 11-8, 11-7, 12-10 win.
The first-string match was between Anthony Brindle of Bounty and the powerfully built Adam Giles.
Brindle’s unerring accuracy and ability to retrieve shots forced Giles into increasingly risky and ambitious shots.
Having gone two games down, Giles fought back strongly to take the third, but his exertions meant he was spent in the fourth as Brindle won through 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4.
