SAINTS pair Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw have tonight been named in the PFA Premier League team of the season.

On a night when the league's leading scorer Luis Suarez was hotly tipped to land the player of the year award, he and Sturridge were joined by Reds captain Steven Gerrard in the league select XI.

The announcements at London's Grosvenor House Hotel came hours after Liverpool lost 2-0 to Chelsea in the Premier League, to hand Manchester City the initiative in the race to lift the title, with a slip from Gerrard leading to the Blues' first goal.

Chelsea's Petr Cech, Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard made the PFA's Premier League team, along with City's Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure, plus Everton right-back Seamus Coleman, who scored an own goal at St Mary's yesterday.

While many of the players involved were sent messages of congratulations by their clubs on Twitter, the Football Association noted the inclusion of five players who could be World Cup bound with England this summer, stating: "Five @england players voted by professionals into @PFA team of the year: @GaryJCahill @LukeShaw3 Steven Gerrard, Adam Lallana @D_Sturridge"

PFA Premier League team of the year: Cech (Chelsea), Shaw (Southampton), Kompany (Man City), Cahill (Chelsea), Coleman (Everton), Hazard (Chelsea), Yaya Toure (Man City), Gerrard (Liverpool), Lallana (Southampton), Suarez (Liverpool), Sturridge (Liverpool).

Great news and particularly pleasant as it isn't a surprise, just well-deserved.

How long before someone posts that we'll lose them this summer?

Just have to wait for redandy10 to catch up.
Me, I am well proud of this accolade, it will mean a great deal to Luke and Lala, but has definitely been fully earned.

What about the best holding mids in the league, Spider and Corky. Surely that's an oversight. Oh and Nat and Callum are both better then Coleman. And then of course Dejan is better than Cahill.I think we have been very shortchanged here.

interestingly luke has given an interview, on sky sports site, where he claims he is happy to stay at saints next season!

Shaw told Sky Sports News that whilst he is flattered by the stories, he is more than happy to continue his football education on the south coast.

"It's a good thing to be linked with them, but I don't concentrate with that stuff. I've got football to focus on. That's my only thinking," he said.

"(Southampton) is a great club, I'm still young and I've got plenty to learn. It's all rumours. I'm just focusing on the two games I've got left and then see what happens."

thats one in the eye for those who keep saying he doesn't want to be here and we will find it too hard to keep him!

Don't worry the Mirror will take the "then we see what happens " and turn it around to mean something entirely different.

I'm over 50, Ospers, and I'm still young :-)

Anyway, well done both of them. Richly deserved.

This season just gets better and better and we still have our 'most points in a Prem season' and Roy's Brasil squad to look forward to.

I suppose being banned for the first few games for biting an opponent in a match doesn't count against you then?
Last year he was booed when he was announced in the team of the year!
Whilst I would agree that Suarez has had a great season I think its wrong that a player that served such a long ban for doing what he did, as well as his previous ban for racist comments, should be voted as the best player of the season, it should go to a model professional and role model for kids to look up to!

that was last season
but the ban carried over to this season. I`m not saying he isn't a great player, lets be honest diverpool wouldn't be where they are without him and that's why they were so desperate to keep him. what I am saying is how can you have a player who has missed the start of the season because he was banned for biting another professional on the pitch, and who has previously been caught doing the same thing and had a ban for racist comments, voted as player of the season?
what does that teach the 8,9,10 yr olds who look up to players like that? its ok what you do because if you play well everything will be forgotten?
a few years ago british players were frowned on if they dived, and we all thought it was just a continental thing, now look at all the diving that goes on, why? because jurgen klinsmann made a joke of it at spuds, in his 1 year there, and everybody went from hating him to loving him he even won the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award, the same writers who were very critical of him when he first came here! now you here commentators saying `if theres any contact a player has a right to go down`. Osman got booked for diving on sat yet all the pundits were saying was that he might have been going down before any contact but he knew it was coming so he was right to go down.
suarez may have been the best player this season but surely when you vote for player of the year you take things like biting other players into account? would saints fans vote for Osvaldo next year if he comes back and scores 20+ goals and helps us to a top 6 finish? I would hope not.

again don't get me wrong he is a fantastic player who is clearly one of the best in the world. however as you say it is voted for by the players, the same players that he has racially abused and bitten. I know it happened last season but the fact that the ban carried through to this season should really impact on the voting. as I said you cant forget what he did last season as the ban continued to this season. when he plays the game properly he is up there with messi, Ronaldo etc but he will always be remembered for his indiscretions. I am not saying that the saints players should have been voted player of the year instead of him either so its not sour grapes.
surely though being well behaved should come into the thinking of those who vote? personally I just cant see past what he has done, maybe if he has another fantastic season next year, apart from against us, and doesn't get involved in controversy I might not be against him being player of the year, just not this year but that might be just me!
