Saints football director Les Reed this morning made a statement to the media at the club's Staplewood training ground. Here is what he had to say...

"As you know I am member of the board and director of the club and my responsibility is football.

Currently I am responsible for transfers, I’m responsible for contract negotiations and all of those board level football matters that the club is involved in.

I work very very closely with Mauricio, we speak every day and sometimes for several hours in the day and so we are very close and talk a lot about all the matters that go on here.

I think that there is a lot of misinformation out there at the moment that needs clearing up.

The first point I’d like to make is that with regard to Mauricio Pochettino’s contract negotiations that’s my role and we are very happy with the way we are approaching it at the moment.

Let’s clear that up because he’s asked the same question every week.

We talk every day and we are talking about the future - planning, pre-season, planning the transfer strategy. No player will be brought into or leave this club without Mauricio and I discussing it and his agreement. We talk about that on daily basis and we are planning for the future and the long term future.

We would like to focus on the remaining games of the season and Mauricio has repeatedly said that and therefore we will pick up the details of any contract talks in the summer when the season is over.

I would like to reemphasise that we are happy with that - both myself and Mauricio are happy with that – so we can focus on the details of pre-season, transfer market planning and so on. We are both comfortable with the situation.

The second point I’d like to clear up is speculation in the press about our players. That is my responsibility.

As we stand there have been no enquiries, we have had no bids and we have had no offers for any of our players. That’s accurate, that is the truth and that’s exactly where we are.

Reports that we are about to close deals on certain players are totally misinformed, misleading and are not true. No club has been given permission to talk to any of our players so reports that some of our players are in the process of negotiating stellar transfer fees or contracts are absolutely misinformed and inaccurate.

No club has been given permission to talk to any of our players and that will remain so.

As far as the policy in concerned we have had a great season, we want to build on that season, we want to improve the squad going forward, we want to retain the players we’ve got. They are all contracted, they all have existing contracts and we intend to honour those contracts.

Any enquiries we get will probably be met with a ‘no, not for sale.’ Our intention is to keep this very good team together and build on it by bringing in players to improve upon it.

Every transfer window, particularly the summer, is a difficult one because everybody is out there trying to attract players.

We have our targets, we want to improve the squad, these are things we are discussing on a daily basis and we intend to produce a squad that is capable of not just maintaining the position we are in at the moment but improving next season.

It’s a positive message we want to get out there.

Our fans deserve to understand there is not going to be a fire sale here and we have repeatedly said that.

We have had no offers for players, deals are not about to be concluded for any of our players, and we want to keep all of our best players here at the club and build on that for the future.

That is all I want to say and I don’t want to take any questions on it, I want to deliver the accurate picture of where we stand at the moment because of the speculation that is going on."

being a Saint's fan and season ticket holder reading this statement is very re-assuring and good to know the truth, having also read the intense speculation regarding both our manager and players after having a fantastic season, playing entertaining football. Whilst it's good to hear from somebody who knows and is aware within the club, I do read and take Les Reed's comments very cautiously as having been a Saint's fan all my life I am used to watching the club sell it's best players, But it is why I think the current boards long term intentions will become clear in the summer of where the club is going. Good luck for the final 3 games to everyone at Southampton football Club and lets finish in style and maintain 8th which would be a fantastic league finish for the club.

I think that's the first time I've seen Les Reed quoted, in such detail at least. Whie I welcome the statement wholeheartedly, I do wonder what's been going on with all the recent player statements (rather unusual, and it struck me as a concerted campaign). I expect MoPo has gotten fed up with the hacks and said "Les, save me!"

This media rubbish is only put out there to unsettle players, in order to try to get them to the "BIG" clubs.
This is very unsettling for the fans so what must it be like for the players?

You people are unbelievable. You clamour for a statement, you get a statement, but judge it by your own dodgy standards and don't believe a word of it. We, of course are all aware of how quickly things can change in football, but as far as I can see from the statement, Reed and Poch are talking about the future, whether they can come to a satisfactory settlement is wholly down to them and no matter how much we desire a good outcome, it is still a matter of conjecture. Les Reed said that they have received no formal approaches for ANY of the players, why would he say that if it was not true? That isn't to say that there won't be any when the window opens, we have plenty of saleable commodities, but they may not want to go anywhere yet, the price will have to be right, we don't have to trade if we don't want to. Any of these "you heard it here first" rumours are completely dead in the water, some will obviously come true if you say enough of them, you are bound to get it right eventually, but there is more chance of you looking like a complete mug..

thank god for that I was getting a bit irritated with Man U Chelsea Arsenal and City fans claiming that we are a sellling club and even one paper the Daily Mail, claiming we could not retain pour players because of the FFP rules if you please. A total misconception and I question whether the reporter concerned, Martin Samuel, even understands what the rules actually mean.

Now for Heaven's sake will everybody please settle down and stop worrying about the future? The club knows what it is doing and where it is going, all we have to do as supporters is get behind the team and pogo when the goals go in.

It annoys me that there are daily reports about how deals are already being concluded for our players like Shaw when this is clearly rubbish. The papers should be help accountable for printing such lies. The Mirror is one that I have seen going back weeks that constantly keeps re-repeating the same out news story. Its like they've just decided it is going to happen and will keep printing the story. I don't see why Saints can't sue the papers for the stories if they are clearly false.

I've never clamoured for a statement on here. Seedhouse has been doing most of that, not me. I don't have dodgy standards and I have queried one word only. Try to understand what you read will you.

I would have been happy for no statement at this point and would have happily waited to the end of the season for a statement of clarification. But I am grateful for what Les Reed has said. I just questioned the word probably because it is political word used by a corporate politician.

Just for the record I would like us to keep all of our best players for the entirety of their careers, but I also know it is inevitable they will leave at sometime to improve their earnings and chances of playing Champions League football which sadly, I personally believe is unobtainable playing for a provincial club like Southampton.

And I won't be moaning when they leave whatever age they are. People have to take care of themselves and loyalty to the individual should always come before loyalty to the employer and the fans/supporters, especially in a career that is short lived.

I don't think professional footballers should have any particular loyalty to a club, unless of course they want to. They are guns for hire.

However, I will still be wanting to win every game we play. But I do have a realistic view not a sentimental one.

NC joined us in July 2009, he appointed Les Reed in April 2010 as Head of Football Development and Support, I would imagine that since then Les has had to make several hundred vital decisions, he would be a brilliant man if he got every one of them right. He is now Executive Director of the Club and has even more decisions to make and no doubt he will get a few more wrong before we have finished.

Good statement. I just worry a little about the word 'Probably' being used when referring to enquiries for our players. But apart from that... great.
I agree. The statement couldn't be more clear, otherwise there is no point to him making one. It was made to set the record straight. We are not a selling club; we are building for the future and we are looking to strenghen and have an even better season next year.

Is it just me but I'm actually a little worried by this statement. Hasn't it always been club policy to say nothing regarding rumour and speculation? Surely this is akin to the chairman's public backing of a manager that's about to be sacked? "No offers, no ones going to be sold!" We've all seen it before.

What ever statement the club makes people will try and pick holes in it and the press will continue to print the usual rumours linking our players with other clubs, I am afraid that is the price you pay when you produce such talented players from a youth academy which is admired by every club in the country, Rumours are part of football and they will never stop,COYR.

Well that seems emphatic enough. Now let's play a what if game.

Various players out (lesser mortals only) = 15 mill fees total.
We sign Agazzi in goal - out of contract summer,
Gomis striker (Olympic Lyon) - out of contract summer
Bertrand as left back - 6 mill
Move Shaw to left mf = new winger for zero cost
Tie up Corky on long contract = contented and effective central MF
Welcome JRod back to the subs bench at Xmas (as good as signing a new striker)
Mame Diouf - Striker - out of contract summer
Aaron Hunt - MF - out of contract summer
Lescott - CB - out of contract summer

Leaves 9 mill for Poochy to sign whoever he wants.
If only it were that simple eh!?

How long have you been following the Saints? It hasn't always been Club Policy to be 100% secretive, it has been from July 8th 2009 until 15th January 2014 and there was a reason for that which most of us are aware of.

Santa , you are correct. By my expert judgement and wisdom , i won the season ticket. I like The Echo and this site for our comments but, they do really really squeeze a story IMO. Les Reed owned up to a few cockups in the transfer market today when he stated all transfers were discussed by himself and the manager. How much money do you think he has wasted in the past??.

If I actually knew, I wouldn't tell you, but I am actually hopeless at figures and despite much research I haven't been able to penetrate the walls of the SFC Directorship or fathom their Financial acumen. Every Club has their successes in the Player department, we aren't unique, we rely on Scouting reports I would assume, and if they haven't done their homework for which they are well paid, you can't blame those responsible for signing a "pup", if they get let down by an individual or two that can't cut the mustard.
I relate our Club to a giant jig-saw, not all of the pieces are going to fit, but when they do, then we will be cooking on gas.
I am happy that you aren't calling anyone a waste of space when you haven't got the proof of the pudding as it could make you appear a proper chump if you were horribly wrong.

Thank you Les this is what we wanted to hear. My only reservation is leaving everything to the 'summer'. Remember there is a World Cup going on so leaving things until after it will be a manic time and leave little time for the new players to settle in for the new season.
The time for action is now, first resolve the manager situation by the end of the season, why wait because potential new players will be deterred by the uncertainty. Then sign up as many of the new targets as soon as the transfer window opens and don't leave it until after the World Cup as the prices will probably go up.
The time for action Les, is NOW not later.
My first target signing would be Steven Caulker from Cardiff as there are not many proven young centreback in the premier league at 22 he look good when we played them.
