JAY Gasson was delighted to be announced as the winner of the Basingstoke Town Supporters Player of the Year Award – and he would like the chance to retain his title next season.

The central defender has been one of the Camrose club’s stand-out players in a disappointing season, and his efforts have been recognised by the supporters, who voted him their player of the year.

Gasson was presented with the trophy before Monday’s victory over Weston-super-Mare, and he is really happy to have won.

“It was a nice surprise and it’s always good to be recognised by the fans,” the 29-year-old said. “I do not expect to win any award but I think this has been my most consistent season. David Ray and I have struck up a good partnership and we read each other well.”

Gasson is coming to the end of his fourth year at the Camrose and is keen to remain at the club next season.

“I’m happy at Basingstoke,” he said. “It’s the longest I have been at any club and I feel really settled.

“There are good people at the club, looking to push things forward and make the club as big as it can be. Hopefully, I am part of that and I would like to have a chat with the manager about signing up for next season.”
