BASINGSTOKE duo Fiona Garnett and Neil Atkins claimed the mixed title at the Basingstoke and District Badminton League Open tournament.

In the mixed competition there were two groups of five pairs and one of six pairs.

In Group A, with five pairs, Basingstoke pair Gina Rapacioli/ Peter Bevell won all their games. Katie Woods/Lee Frith from Newbury dropped just three points to finish second.

Reading pair, Jovaynne Teh/Edrick Satya were a close third, with Hawley’s Karen Gilbert/Dan Sheppard and Jackie Ansell/Grant Lawrence from Newbury making up the rest of the group.

Group B had six pairs and was won by another home pair, Fiona Garnett/Neil Atkins, with Winchester’s Queenie Mo/Adam Turner in second with 97 points. The rest of the group was made up of Claire Workman/Richard Wheeler, Rachel Johnson/Mark Titchener, and Basingstoke pairs Alex Woods/Michael Nash and Emma Penn/Chris Ackroyd.

A five-pair Group C saw Newbury’s Claire Stott/Ben Ansell come out on top and Rachel Richards/Max Northfield finish second.

Jo Hiller/Gary Bates from Swindon and Basingstoke pairs Alisha Nunley/Keith Palmer and Jenny Ross/Ben Cornish made up the rest of the group.

The first mixed semi-final was played between winners of Groups A and C, which saw Rapacioli/ Bevell beat Stott/ Ansell 21-16.

In the second semi-final, Group B winners Garnett/Atkins beat the best runners-up, Richards/ Northfield from Group C, 21-12.

Garnett/Atkins then proved their dominance in the final, beating Rapacioli/Bevell 21-9 to win the trophy.
