Pochettino: Let's finish this 'fantastic season' in style

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has called on his Saints side to round off a “fantastic season” in style.

With Saints drawing 0-0 at Aston Villa and Newcastle losing at home to Swansea, Pochettino’s men have opened up a three point cushion as they look to equal the club’s best ever Premier League finish.

They sit ahead of the Magpies in eighth place, and if they could still be there at the end of the campaign it would equal the best position the club have had in the Premier League era when Gordon Strachan’s FA Cup finalists achieved the feat in 2003.

Saints have played well in recent weeks but struggled for wins and Pochettino, below, is hoping that a fine season will be rounded off in style in the last three games which sees home matches against Everton and Man United and a trip to Swansea.

He said: “We have already achieved quite a high grade.

“We have already done well throughout the season taking into account the problems we have had on and off the pitch.

“We have had a fantastic season so far.

“Of course it would be great to finish the season on a high note but if you analyse the season so far we have had a fantastic season.”

Saints dominated at Villa Park but couldn’t quite turn that into goals.

It was a match of few chances but the best of them certainly fell to Saints.

“We deserved to win,” reflected Pochettino. “We did everything right, we did everything well, except score.

“I am very happy with the team’s performance but I’m a little bit sad because we created many chances and were a little bit wasteful as well.”

He added: “We are reaching the end of the season and it’s clear we are all needing points.

“Villa are in a very difficult situation where they need a lot of points to ensure survival for next season but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the great atmosphere at the stadium. It was a really nice stadium, probably one of the best I’ve been to in England.”

All the atmosphere was created by our fans, Villa's were quiet most of the game although there was good banter going back and forth. The Johnson's Paint chant is a gem and nice to hear a JRod song even though he wasn't on the pitch. Well done to all who made it.

Wellbeck's looking like he might be available in summer... Play SRL a bit deeper and have Wellbeck playing central, and goals will come.

Dream on. Too dear and too high wages and not a great player either. Apart from that he'd be perfect.

You are spot on, when they have played, albeit for short periods of time, foe Englsnd they have played well together.but how much souls he cost?

Haha. Innit.

Anyone see the United game today? Man, that left back of theirs is well sh1t. We dodged a bullet there.

i reckon we should put in a cheeky bid for that Cardiff keeper if they go down (I love Artur but he's pretty injury prone for a keeper) and we'll have Jordan Turnbull from the under-21s easily able to step up a centre back, so all we then need is another striker plus a creative midfielder. We also need to look at whether we need to play two defensive midfielders as it may help us dominate possession but I think it deprives us of quality further up the pitch where it's needed. It's that link between midfield and attack that's costing us valuable points, and as much as I love Lalz he really can't do that job alone.

His wages surely can't be any more than the exorbitant figure that Osvaldo is on...?

Do you know how much each of them is getting paid then? Could you let us all in on it please!
Welbeck is an awful player who is made to look good by the players around him. SRL made Welbeck look good for england but that said more about SRL than Welbeck.
You can guarantee that if Welbeck left manure for stoke or villa, or a team like that, he wouldn't get anywhere near the England team!

The chances that Saints could be better next season is 50/50 at this moment in time.
Who-ever the manager is, or what players we have should not make a difference to your ST renewal.
