Basingstoke Gymnastic Club members excel at Alex Strachan Cup
BASINGSTOKE Gymnastic Club’s aerobic squad had a very successful time at Guildford in the Alex Strachan Cup, their first national competition of the year.
The Basingstoke gymnasts competed from regional to international level and presented 25 routines to the judges on floor.
This produced some fantastic results and a big haul of medals.
Zara Reeve, Robyn Marney, Lucia Gonzalez, Keira Hadley and Emma Harris competed in a group routine for their first ever competition and scored 13.558 points, which won them gold.
Flamecarmen Stafford competed at a national level (age 10-11) and won a bronze medal. Emerald Cundy (age 12-14) also won the bronze in her age group after as she returned from a serious knee injury.
Caitlin Fiddler, Laetitia Taite and Chloe Hargreaves (age 15-17) performed a fantastic trio routine for the first time as they won silver.
Fiona Pink competed in the regional senior women category and scored a personal best of 15.450 on her way to winning the gold.
Erin Hamilton-Giles, Keleigh-Anne Blakey, Flamecarmen Stafford, Summer-Lily Blackburn and Xanthe Esslemont all competed as a group and picked up a silver medal.
On the second day of the competition, it was the turn of the international level gymnasts and Basingstoke’s Zanna Woods was the last to compete in a trio routine, with two other girls from Bulmershe Gymnastic Club.
They were hoping that their brand new routine would book them a place to represent Great Britain in the World Championships in Cancun, Mexico, in June.
They did a fantastic job, scoring 19.588 to take the gold medal in the Senior Women category.
After a successful weekend of amazing gymnastics, there was one last honour as Amy Woods, head coach at Basing-stoke Gymnastic Club, won the British Aerobic Gymnas-tics Coach of the Year award.
