THE seniors team from Sandford Springs Golf Club, in Kingsclere, are celebrating after winning a winter league.

Sandford Springs took on Donnington Grove in the final, which was played over two legs, home and away. Sandford played away first and claimed a 3-1 lead, which they were able to defend in the home leg.

The matches were close throughout but it was Donnington Grove who claimed the first point, their pair beating Bill Lloyd and Chris Hawson. Derek Jones and Clive Chewins restored Sandford Springs' two-point lead but Donnington Grove won the third match on the 18th hole to set up a nervous finale.

Home pair Martin Porter and Roy Higgins were one down going down the last and needed to win the hole to ensure that their side would win the title.

The pressure certainly did not get to Higgins, who had already carded an eagle and three birdies over the course of the back nine. He rolled in yet another birdie putt to ensure that the match was halved, meaning Sandford Springs won the match 4.5-3.5.
