BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants athlete Maddie Deadman put in an impressive run at the English Schools Cross Country Championships.

Deadman was one of 10 Basingstoke athletes representing Hampshire at Donnington Park, in Leicestershire, producing an outstanding finish to claim fourth place.

Running in the junior girls’ race, Deadman passed eight other runners in the final 800m to finish in the top five.

Rebecca Poole competed in the same race, finishing 51st, while Charlotte Chalwin sprinted home to finish 28th in the senior girls’ event, with Gemma Wildash 84th. Lucy Wildash was 45th in the intermediate girls’ race.

Harry Richardson helped the Hampshire team win the junior boys’ race, with Callum Cleary’s efforts helping the intermediate boys do the same.

Ollie Butler was the top Basingstoke finisher in the senior boys’ race, finishing 78th. Brendan O’Connor was 98th, with Hampshire coming fourth to claim overall victory in the boys team event.
