Poll: Where should Saints strengthen

Basingstoke Gazette: Jay Rodriguez Jay Rodriguez

With the summer fast approaching, what position do you think should be Saints’ first priority to strengthen in the transfer market?

News that Jay Rodriguez will be ruled out for six months with a knee injury might make you believe that adding an additional forward player is the most pressing need.

Or would you like to add further depth at full-back before anything else?

Maybe you view a midfielder as the most important addition, or perhaps you'd like to see a new centre-half or goalkeeper as the next key arrival.

Whatever you think, have your say by voting below and leaving your views in the comments section...

No, send him out on loan. He's no worse than any other 3rd choice keeper if you ask me so quit trashing him. It's actually our No 2 spot that needs strengthening as Kelvin is near the end I'm afraid.

Next season:

1. Boruc
2. New guy who can challenge AB
3. Davis
PG on loan

We then need a top quality centre back and at least 1 striker.

I genuinely think we need to strengthen in almost every area. Not necessarily to replace our existing first team who have been excellent, but to give us more options. I think a goalkeeper is a big priority, but I would also like to see us bring in a wide player with real pace and also some other attacking players.

This is a big summer for us. Keep the players we want to, tie the manager to a long term contract and incest wisely and we can challenge.

Dani Osvaldo is getting into trouble in Juve, so he could be coming back to us, Emmanuel Mayuka is doing alright at Sauchaux, 15 apps, 3 gls, then back home we've got SG and Rickie, and don't forget that the midfield (Adam) chip in with goals as well, so IMO we ought to sign a really good GK and a CB as we have enough resources spanning other areas on the pitch, who in reality are good enough, they just need to prove their worth out their on the pitch

Norgie's right, but it'll take more than one retirement, CD. Count the stonewall errors (not the 'probably got it wrongs' or the 'possibly should have given that the other ways'), JUST the absolutely dreadful ones such as the one at the Etihad. This season has been riddled with them. Now try to remember the last time we had a truly dreadful decision in our favour. From memory, it would have to be the penalty we got against The Seagulls when Jose was fouled about 3 yards outside of the box ...... in a match in which the ref failed to award 3 other clear penalties our way!!!!!

As for the things the club can to some extent control - that is, new signings - I would love to see us sign:
1. an even better (but young) first choice keeper to develop behind Artur for a year or so before cementing the role full time. (I would love that to be Gazza but I don't think he will ever quite have what it takes.)
2. A truly world-class centre back
3. A goal poacher
4. A terrifyingly pacey attacker

3&4 could even be one player but he (or they) would probably be mainly an option from the bench when needed. I would love Mayuka to be this player but, contrary to what has been suggested above, I don't think he is doing too well here in France right now and has been an unused sub in recent matches. Here's hoping ....

It's no more than a wish list, though, and as 666sfc says above, the most important thing will be keeping the current group of players and coaches together for the next 10 years.

You are right of course. How many times have we heard MoPo say that we just want fairness. It's what the Clutterbrain fiasco was all about as well. We have certainly been robbed of quite a few points by "big team" refs and by the simply incompetent like Clutterbrain's and the hopeless lino from the ManC game. I hope that as a club we are sending full reports after every game and highlighting how bad some of their decisions are. I've just watched the Manure game and it really was refreshing to have a ref who wasn't intent on being the centre of attention

If we can keep hold of the manager and all the layers he wants we don't need that many more. Sell Osvaldo, clearly, not sure about Mayuka. We tend to add 3 or 4 youngsters a season so if Harrison Reed is thought to be good enough pre-season, we cold sell Vic, I know that may be controversial but we do have good cover there. With the 30 million for those two, buy a number two keeper, a proven centre back and a goal scorer. No extra money spent, why waste any more on bench warmers that'll hold back the young talent?
