Saints Under-21s are in action against Newcastle United this afternoon at St Mary's

Basingstoke Gazette: Young Saints in big final push Young Saints in big final push

Saints Under-21s take on Newcastle United this afternoon at St Mary’s in what could be their last game of the season in the Under-21 Premier League.

Martin Hunter’s side are currently sitting in fourth spot in the league, meaning if they were stay there they could reach the Final stages of the competition.

However, their potential progression depends heavily on how the teams around them do, but a victory over the young Magpies will give them the best chance possible to get through.

The Under-21s, who usually play at the Staplewood Training Ground, are in action at St Mary’s where Southampton’s first team thrashed Newcastle 4-0 in the Premier League at the weekend.

Hunter told Saints’ official website: “It should be a good occasion. It’s unfortunate that it’s in the early afternoon when a lot of people will be working, but for the players to play in this stadium is part of the way up the ladder to the First Team.

“It’s important for them to play in a fabulous stadium; that’s what they’re aspiring to do.”

The match is open to the public and is free. Entry for the game can be found through Turnstile A, blocks five to eight.

The St James' Park outfit are currently sitting 21st in a league of 22, so Hunter will certainly be aiming for a big victory with likes of Sam Gallagher and Harrison Reed potentially in the squad for the match.
