THERE was mixed fortunes for Whitchurch United in their last two Wessex League Premier Division home outings, as they beat Winchester City 2-1 last Thursday, but then lost 1-0 to Totton and Eling on Saturday.

Nic Turpin came back to haunt his old side as he scored both goals in Whitchurch’s victory over Winchester City.

The home side gave debuts to goalkeeper Ashley West from Thatcham and Tom Mundy from Laverstock and Ford in their starting line-up, while a third newcomer Dominic Friel, was on the bench.

The deadlock in the game was broken a minute after the break as the visitors scored.

Whitchurch came looking for an equaliser and Scott Hassall sent Turpin clear, only for Leigh Mills to make the challenge and deny him.

The home striker had better luck next time, as he slid the ball past the advancing Winchester goalkeeper.

Then just past the hour mark, Isaac Sedu’s low cross was lashed high into the net from 12 yards by Turpin for his second of the night.

Mundy looked set to mark his debut with a goal, but was denied by a last ditch challenge from former Basingstoke Town midfielder Lloyd Webber.

The winner in the weekend’s game at Totton and Eling came in the last 15 minutes.

Whitchurch are at home again tonight, in another league fixture with Fareham the visitors.
