4:57pm

What a win for Saints today, who were as superb as Newcastle were dreadful. Mauricio Pochettino's side are now eighth in the league table, leapfrogging the Magpies. Thanks for joining us. We will have a full report on the website shortly, as well as reaction from the manager as soon as we get it. You can also see a report, analysis and pictures from the game in tonight's Sports Pink, while we will have all our usual coverage in Monday's Daily Echo.

4:50pm

Rodriguez bags his second of the day and his 15th league goal of the season, firing through the legs of Rob Elliot to complete a magnificent day for Mauricio Pochettino's team.

4:43pm

Saints: Rickie Lambert off, Gaston Ramirez on (83 mins).

4:43pm

4:39pm

Newcastle: Moussa Sissoko off, Paul Dummett on (78 mins).

4:35pm

CHANCE (75 mins): Rob Elliot saves one-on-one from James Ward-Prowse. Rickie Lambert then lifts in a cross that Jay Rodriguez heads against the post. The rebound falls to Ward-Prowse, who is denied by a superb save from Elliot.

4:32pm

Saints: Steven Davis off, Morgan Schneiderlin on (73 mins).

4:30pm

SAINTS 3 NEWCASTLE 0 (Adam Lallana 70)

It's a hat-trick of England goals. Jack Cork shows great tenacity in midfield to win the ball.Lallana carries it forward and unleashes a left-footed drive from 20 yards out that flies into the top corner.

4:25pm

The flow of the game has been broken up by a series of stoppages for injury. For Saints, both Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw have required treatment, but each was fine to continue.

4:19pm

Rickie Lambert slams with his 49th minute slammer into the back of Newcastle's net.

SAINTS 2 NEWCASTLE 0 (Rickie Lambert 49)

Newcastle, continuing with their policy of not marking anyone from Saints, leave Lambert all alone at the far post as he runs in to meet Adam Lallana's chipped ball. With no one around him, he decides he might as well take a touch to control it before slamming it into the net.

4:03pm

Newcastle: Davide Santon and Luuk De Jong on at half-time, in place of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Hatem Ben Arfa.

4:02pm

SAINTS 1 NEWCASTLE 0

3:48pm

SAINTS 1 NEWCASTLE 0 (Jay Rodriguez 45)

Quite how it's taken this long, we're not sure. At last, though, Saints have got themselves in front. Steven Davis chips a ball over the top. Newcastle attempt to play an offside trap, which they get completely wrong. Rickie Lambert jogs through and squares the ball to Rodriguez who finishes. That's four games in a row now with a goal for the Saints forward.

3:46pm

CHANCE (44 mins): A stunning save from Rob Elliot keeps the scores level. James Ward-Prowse clips a ball over the top for Rickie Lambert, who centres it for Jay Rodriguez. He slides in and looks to have converted, but Elliot flies to his left and,. at full stretch, diverts the ball wide.

3:39pm

Rickie Lambert and Fabricio Coloccini both go for the ball.

Basingstoke Gazette:

3:30pm

CHANCE (27 mins): Luke Shaw sprints down the left and delivers a low cross from deep. Jay Rodriguez gets to it first, and tries to flick the ball into the far corner, but it drifts wide.

3:28pm

Jay Rodriguez puts his head in his hands after a near miss on goal.

Basingstoke Gazette:

3:24pm

CHANCE (22 mins): And still Saints aren't in front. Yoan Gouffran decides that not marking any of the Saints players ins't enough of a help, so decides to pass them the ball as well. He gives it straight to Jay Rodriguez 25 yards out, who slides in Rickie Lambert, but his left-foot effort is beaten away by Rob Elliot.

3:23pm

CHANCE (20 mins): Now it's Dejan Lovren's turn to miss the target with a header from six yards. James Ward-Prowse swings in a corner, no one tracks the defender, but he puts his effort well over.

3:21pm

CHANCE (18 mins): Rickie Lambert sends in a cross from deep towards the far post, which Calum Chambers nods across goal. Adam Lallana powers in and gets to the ball first, but he heads wide from six yards out.

3:18pm

CHANCE (16 mins): Newcastle are hanging on by a thread here. Steven Davis splits their backline with a beautiful pass that picks out the run of Rickie Lambert. He tries to lift the ball over the advancing Rob Elliot, but the Magpies' keeper manages to get a hand to it, diverting the ball to safety.

3:16pm

CHANCE (13 mins): Jay Rodriguez goes close once more. This time he does hit the target with a clever diving header from Rickie Lambert's cross, but Rob Elliot dives to his right to keep the ball from skidding into the far corner. Moments later, James Ward-Prowse drills a shot from just outside the area into the side netting.

3:14pm

CHANCE (11 mins): Jay Rodriguez close to scoring again. This time it's a Calum Chambers cross from the right, with Rodriguez rising wonderfully above Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at the far post, but he plants his header into the side netting.

3:11pm

CHANCE (8 mins): Steven Davis sends an angled ball forward that catches the Newcastle defence off guard. Rodriguez sneaks behind right-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, chests the ball down out of the air and advances towards goal, but, with just keeper Rob Elliot to beat, he puts his effort into the side netting. A great chance to score in a fourth consecutive match goes begging for the Saints forward.

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino

Another week and, sure enough, another Mauricio Pochettino contract story. The Saints boss can't escape questions about his future, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season, and a number of clubs from around Europe being linked to him. Pochettino has again said he is only focusing on the final seven matches of the campaign, but he has said he will be happy to sit down and discuss his future with the club's board once the summer arrives.

After these six weeks, then we can speak about things in a calm manner and I can get to know more how the club wants to move forward, what the new project at the club is and how we move forward from then on.

Mauricio Pochettino

2:30pm

There have been many memorable contests between these two teams on the south coast over the years. Matt Le Tissier was at the centre of many of them, emerging as a traditional tormentor of Newcastle. He score plenty of great goals against the Magpies, but none were perhaps quite as breathtaking as this beauty...

2:24pm

Basingstoke Gazette: Referee Andre Marriner showed a red card to Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs

There has been a lot of talk about the referee for today's match, with Andre Marriner taking charge just a week after his blunder in Chelsea's 6-0 win over Arsenal. Marriner sent off Gunners defender Kieran Gibbs when he should have dismissed his teammate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Rather than being dropped from the Premier League rotation, Marriner was handed the contest between Saints and Newcastle. Not everyone involved this afternoon agrees with the decision, though.

2:20pm

Saints defender Dejan Lovren has issued his traditional pre-match rallying cry on Twitter...

2:18pm

Basingstoke Gazette: Jose Fonte and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford last week.

Jose Fonte has been one of Saints' star performers this season. The defender spoke to the media this week and had a lot of interesting things to say. Fonte believes the club are about to embark on one of the most important summers in their history, as they bid to keep hold of manager Mauricio Pochettino and key players in order to continue the progress they have made in the past five years. You can read the full story by clicking here. Below is a snippet of what Fonte had to say...

This possibly is one of the most important summers of this club. If you want to go and move forward and be better of course they know what they have to do. They are the bosses, they need to do the right decision. But if you want this club to go higher and better I think, in my mind, there’s no doubt that we need to keep Mauricio for a long time. By keeping Mauricio you probably keep the most important players.

Jose Fonte

2:06pm

That's one change for Saints with Calum Chambers in for Nathaniel Clyne at right-back. Morgan Schneiderlin and Guly do Prado both overcome injury to make the substitutes' bench.

2:02pm

TEAMS

SAINTS: Boruc, Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Cork, S. Davis, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Rodriguez, Lambert.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Hooiveld, Reed, Schneiderlin, Ramirez, Do Prado, Gallagher.

NEWCASTLE: Elliot, Yanga-Mbiwa, Williamson, Coloccini, Haïdara, Anita, Tioté, Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Gouffran, Cissé.

Subs: Alnwick, Santon, Dummett, S.Taylor, Gosling, Shola Ameobi, de Jong.

Ref: Andre Marriner

1:57pm

Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino held his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon at St Mary's. Here's a clip of what he had to say...

1:49pm

We'll be getting the team news in about ten minutes. Both teams have a significant number of injury concerns this week. For Saints, Maya Yoshida, Nathaniel Clyne and Kelvin Davis are definitely out. There are also doubts over Morgan Schneiderlin, Jay Rodriguez, Steven Davis and Victor Wanyama. For Newcastle, goalkeeper Tim Krul is sidelined. Full-back Davide Santon could return after recovering from tonsillitis, but full-back Mathieu Debuchy, midfielder Sammy Ameobi and striker Loic Remy are out.

1:46pm

1:45pm

Hello and welcome to this Daily Echo blog from St Mary's Stadium, where Saints are taking on Newcastle in the Premier League. After the last-gasp defeat at Tottenham last weekend, Mauricio Pochettino's side are hoping to get back to winning ways this afternoon. A victory would lift them above their opponents and restore them to eighth position in the league table. Stay with us for build-up, team news and match updates.

The Ref has dropped some howlers in the last 10 minutes, he definitely is too scared to rock the boat rather than make the right decision .... he should have been given the week off.

Adam, check your passport visa, 3-0 to ENGLAND!
