Poll: How important is new Poch contract?

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Much of the talk at Saints over the last few weeks has been about whether the club's manager, Mauricio Pochettino, will sign a new contract.

Pochettino's current deal expires at the end of next season, and, with the countdown on, a number of other teams have already been linked with him.

The 42-year-old says it is not a priority to discuss a new contract, as he is still committed to Saints until 2015, but not everyone at the club shares that outlook.

Striker Rickie Lambert said it is important for the players to see Pochettino agree a fresh deal before the summer, while goalkeeper Artur Boruc has echoed those views.

So, what do you think? Is it important that Pochettino signs a new contract before the season ends, or does it not matter because he still has more than a year to run on his current one?

This is stating the obvious really...but seriously I feel if Poch signs a new contract then we have a chance of keeping players like Shaw in the squad for another season and pushing on with our targets. Everton is now the team I would like to see Saints competing with on terms of points. They have really achieved where we wanted to be - pushing for a Champions League position and this shows it is possible.

I think it is importtant to the younger squad members to see comitment to the club by the manager. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors, maybe Poochy has already said something to reassure the payers, we will never know. Myself i would like to see him stay for stability in the club. Maybe on the next home game we could chant . POOCHY ..POOCHY .. GIVE US A WAVE. Who knows maybe it's what everybody is waiting for???.

Coblers let us down last night , Poopey losing 3-0 and they let in a goal in the 90+ minute for 2-2. Eastleigh v Pompey comical or what??

I do not think it is that important because his body language at times shows disinterest at what is going on out on the field, and last week he looked as if he had spent a night on the tiles. However, his introduction of the high-pressing game has been an improvement, but he does not seem to have much of an idea of how to combat teams who turn the tables on us, perhaps he will learn. It will probably be better if he stays until the end of his contract, but I am not sure this will happen, so I think we had better be prepared for change and embrace any managerial changes with positive confidence.

MP has been a breath of fresh air at St Mary's and has provided a taste of what a quality coach can produce with the assets that are available to him. If ownership will provide the funds to improve those assets I think we will continue to get better results on the pitch while playing the very entertaining brand of football that has been the hall mark of this manager's work. The players seem to really like him. That has to mean something doesn't it?

I totally agree with your sentiments Cincinnati.

The arguments put forward by those who believe MP has no plan B and is inexperienced do not ring true to me. I think every Club, to be truly successful, needs stability, and constantly changing managers cannot be for the good.

MP came here fifteen months ago and completely turned the Saints around with his style of play and management philosophy. It's a style that seems to have been taken to heart by the whole team to great effect. The comments by RL and AB - both internationals! - clearly show how popular and well liked and respected MP is.

Of course he is inexperienced in the English Premier League, but hey, come on - he hasn't done too badly has he? Look at our position in the League - it tells a big story and credit is due to MP and the players who have adapted to his style of play and management.

MP is restrained by the lack of depth on the squad. Injuries are a major problem for Saints, whereas at the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and ManCity the loss of key players is not so critical. I feel that that the loss of some of our first team players to injuries is the main reason for the hiccups in recent results.

I really hope that MP will stay on a long term basis, but he will need assurances from the Owners and the Board that he will be able to strengthen in all areas of the team. If he goes, I fear our key players will follow suit, leaving us with an uncertain future.

If MP is persuaded to stay, then Southampton Football Club will have a very fine future. - trust me!
