WHITCHURCH United scrambled an injury-time equaliser to claim a 2-2 draw against visiting Hamworthy United in the Wessex League Premier Division on Saturday.

The Jam Boys dominated the first half, missing a host of chances to take the lead. Luke Walker failed to make the most of two one-on-one opportunities, while Nic Turpin saw his shot clip the top of the crossbar.

However, it was the visitors who grabbed the lead early in the second half, poor defending allowing one of their players a tap-in at the far post.

Whitchurch found an almost immediate response, Walker slotting home from the penalty spot after Turpin had been brought down, and they had a chances to take the lead, Turpin being denied by the Hamworthy goalkeeper.

Once again, the visitors took the lead against the run of play when they were awarded a soft penalty for handball with just 10 minutes left.

It looked like it was not going to be Whitchurch’s day but they kept going and grabbed an equaliser with the final kick of the game, Alex Pickering poking the ball home during a goal-mouth scramble.

Manager Jim Macey said: “We were pleased with the result in the end but it was a game that we should have won in the first half.”

The Jam Boys, who sit ninth in the table, are in action again tonight, travelling to table-toppers Alresford Town.

“We have a few players out and are struggling for midfielders but we will give it a go,” Macey added. “We don’t really have anything to lose.”
