JOSE Fonte is hoping for a shock call-up to Portugal’s World Cup squad.

The Saints defender is enjoying the best season of his career but has had no contact from Portugal’s head coach, Paulo Bento.

Fonte, 30, said: “I have my goals, I have my dreams and obviously I want to be in the World Cup.

“If I didn’t I wouldn’t be ambitious, what would be the point of playing in the Premier League?

“It hasn’t happened yet but I will keep working hard and looking forward to get my name on the list.

“I’m playing in the best league in the world against the best strikers in the world and we’re doing well so I don’t see why I shouldn’t be considered.”

Portugal’s first-choice defensive pairing is the experienced combination of Bruno Alves (Fenerbahce) and Pepe (Real Madrid).

The likes of Ricardo Costa (Valencia), Rolando (on loan to Inter Milan from FC Porto) and Luis Neto (Zenit St Petersburg) are also ahead of Fonte in Bento’s plans, having been called up for the recent friendly against Cameroon, which Portugal won 5-1.

But Fonte, whose only international recognition was a solitary appearance for Portugal’s Under-21 side, is worthy of consideration.

His mistake in the win against Norwich City was an aberration during what has been an outstanding season alongside Croatia’s Dejan Lovren.

Portugal will be in the same group as Germany, USA and Ghana at Brazil 2014.
