Which Saints starlet has been tipped to be the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Basingstoke Gazette: Zlatan Ibrahimovic Zlatan Ibrahimovic

SAM Gallagher has the potential to become Saints’ answer to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

That was Jose Fonte’s assessment after the teen striker scored his first Premier League goal in the win against Norwich City.

“You can see he’s very strong, very tall and very powerful and he has teammates like Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert to teach him so he can only get better,” said Fonte, pictured right, who reckons the 18-year-old’s strengths are comparable to one of the world’s best players.

“He’s a little bit like Ibrahimovic. He still has to work a lot to be like him but he has pace, he has power, he’s tall so he can be a threat in the air and in behind with his pace. He’s a handful!

"He has good attributes for a striker, definitely. If he keeps working very hard he can get to that level and be the full package.”

Gallagher’s injury-time finish against Norwich was his second senior goal for Saints, having also scored as a substitute in the 2-0 FA Cup win against Yeovil at St Mary’s two months ago.

That's harsh SwedeSaint! Who knows how he'll turn out, but we can already see that he's got a lot of pace - add that to his physical presence, and you have got a dangerous combination. I think he needs to become a bit more composed in front of goal, but that's all about confidence and game time.

Well it was Fantastic to see him score his First Prem league Goal, lets hope it's another Shearer moment and we all look back in years to come and remember that 'Scuffed' first goal as he is whipping them in from all corners ..............

And Jose, fair play for putting your 'Hands Up' .............. One thing I will say it made for a cracking last 10 minutes, and also got the Norwich fans standing up !! I've never seen 3000 away fans sit down all game but fair play to them, a lot of away fans for what is a horrible journey !

Another top Saturday ........... God (not Le Tiss) this is great !

He may be a good player but I agree Swede Saint the potential is there but he's a kid, I think its a bit early in the lads career to saying things like this.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is sheer class, if Sam Gallagher becomes half the player Zlat is, I would be well happy with that.

I agree. Sam Gallagher has a very long way to go !. What we saw is pace and strength and that's it ! If he can score goals from nothing like Zlatan vs England or Nac Breda then the kid will become a true legend !

There is an awful lot of nonense talked about this kind of thing. We have the new Paul Scholes in JWP, the new Gareth Bale in Luke and now we have the new Ibrahimovich in Sam. I'll be happy if he fails to reach those dizzy heights and just turns into a run of the mill 20 goals a season centre forard.

When Zlatan said that he hate England ? Prove it ! I agree he love himself and he's arrogant it's because he's good at what he do scoring goals and He know it. Saying that he's a racist nutcase it's so wrong ! What about Rooney saying " nice to see your home fan boo you ! I thought JWP was the new Beckham, with Harrison Reed being the new Scholes.
Anyway let's have a Ronaldo, too.
I'll nominate Josh Sims for that one as I've heard he is quick, and, in all honesty, he looks a decent player as well.

I think you are right. A new Messi would be good too but I'm not sure if the new Ronaldo would fit in with the new Messi and the new Ibrahimovic would expect a lot of great crosses from the new Beckham while the new Messi and Ronaldos will be expecting great through balls from the new Scholes. This could cause MoPo (or even the new MoPo) some serious problems and I think we need to give serious consideration to downgrading our academy so that we only produce two world superstars per year. I think this would be fairer on the likes of Barca, Real, Chelsk, ManC, Ars, Manure and the top German and Italian sides because at the current rate they just won't be able to compete in a year or two.

That's harsh SwedeSaint! Who knows how he'll turn out, but we can already see that he's got a lot of pace - add that to his physical presence, and you have got a dangerous combination. I think he needs to become a bit more composed in front of goal, but that's all about confidence and game time.
Wow, our expectations for young players are pretty high now aren't they! If comparing a young player to a player who guided us to our last cup final appearance and was in and around the England picture is harsh or insulting then we maybe need to put things into perspective.

Beattie was a proven Premier League striker so I'm sure Sam himself would bite your hand off if he was offered his career at this point, though I'm sure he will also be aiming as high as he possibly can.

Ibrahimovic comparisons are a bit unfair because that guy is world class. If I was comparing anyone to Zlatan it would be Rickie Lambert - who has similarly adapted his game from being a basic big front man to a play maker with flair and the ability to either drop deep and create chances or score from range or get in the box when needed.

One step at a time for Sam but the signs are good and he's at the right club.

Had he been discovered a bit earlier SRL wouldn't have been a million miles away. And remember Zlatan was considered a bit of a donkey only a few years back and very much the conventional front man who, many said, wasn't fantastic in the big games. But, similar to SRL, he's adapted his game to become so much more than a basic target man. As he's lost pace he's sat deeper and been able to show his football brain and the result is a very cultured player unrecognisable to what he used to be.

It's a role that Rooney and Van Persie both seem to try to do for Man Utd but the difference is that they are both doing it for the wrong selfish reasons and just want to spend more time on the ball. SRL and Ibrahimovic are instead all about influencing the game and being happy doing whatever's needed - if the team lacks a front man they can get in the box and will be happy being industrial, if it needs a creative spark they'll drop deep, but they won't do so at the risk of the team losing it's shape as RVP and Rooney tend to this season (insisting on taking corners or spraying the ball from in front of the back four when there's nobody up front capable of knocking the ball in the net).
