Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino says substitute's role helped England World Cup hopeful Rickie Lambert

Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino thought it would help Rickie Lambert to be used as a substitute against Norwich.

The striker was dropped to the bench for the match, but scored within two minutes of his arrival in the second-half.

After five games without a goal, it was a welcome return to form for Lambert, who also set up another one of Saints’ strikes.

Pochettino said: “As manager, I’m always looking for what’s best for the team and also what’s best for every single player, to get the best contribution out of every single player.

“I thought Rickie coming on as a sub would be good for him, and it showed, the fact that he scored a goal.

“Sometimes tactical decisions go your way, and it shows that you’ve made a tactical decision that was right for the game, and that was the case.”

Pochettino’s line-up, while retaining the same formation as normal, had a different feel to it, with Jay Rodriguez moving from his position on the left to play the lone striker role, while playmaker Gastón Ramírez was handed a rare start.

“We inserted some variables that we were looking, of course, to favour our attacking intent,” said Pochettino.

“I thought Gastón and Adam associated quite well, so we were just looking for fresh alternatives today. We’re always looking for different tactics that are going to help us out through a long season.”

While Pochettino certainly worked out a system that benefited Saints going forward, he was left frustrated by how slack they were at the back on occasions.

In fact, Saints nearly undid all their own good work during a wild final five minutes, when they conceded twice.

“It’s a great lesson that we have to learn,” he said. “We’re a young side that’s still growing, and the main lesson is that, obviously, the game is not finished until the final whistle has blown.”

Despite that frustration, the result was still a positive one for Saints, moving them up to eighth in the table.

It was also just a second home win in nine league matches.

Pochettino said: “I think it’s vital to get more wins at home and we did just that, and that’s massive and really important for us.

“I think, overall, we’re having a fantastic season, if you analyse just how tough this competition is.

“If you analyse that, you’ll see we’re having a very good season, especially with everything that’s happened at the club.”

I think MoPo may well haver done SRL a favour. He has shown Woy exactly the type of role he could play in the WC. He'd be great as an impact sub to show the rest of the world that some English players have the heart and the pride and can actually play football. He'd also be on the pitch to show the rest of the donkeys how to take a spot kick.

It all makes sense, our earlier success this Season was down to a system which worked for a long while, but other teams are wiser now and are counteracting appropriately, so we now have to make adjustments, some are being enforced by key injuriesof course, but it is up to Poch. to figure out variations with the players that we have available. Saturday his tactical substitutions worked fine, two forwards on and both scored, that won't happen every time! Lalas replacement was puzzling at the time and I am not sure why, but you cannot argue the outcome. One thing that is becoming obvious is that having the majority of possession is not getting results, it is down to good finishing at the front and keeping things tight at the back, we have the players that can do that, but only if they maintain their concentration for 90 minutes.

I was unable to be at St. Marys as usual, but did listen to Radio Solent's live match commentary, in which it was said that Rickie Lambert's presence as a target man was being missed before he was used as a substitute. And what happened? Rickie very quickly scored a goal!

The fact is, our Rickie has recently been quite unlucky in front of goal. Goals are not given for hitting a post or the bar with shots or headers. Rickie Lambert could very easily have had a couple more goals to his name lately with relatively little more luck.

Strikers thrive on scoring goals. All strikers sometimes go through periods without goals.

I think that, perhaps, Rickie's role in the team has been changed a bit by Mauricio this season, inevitably causing him to have less opportunities to score. Our Rickie isn't just a run of the mill striker, like Andy Carroll. Rickie Lambert has a whole lot more to offer the team. He is a very astute footballer, who can bring other players more into a game and he is well capable of providing a sublime pass, which leads to a goal, as has been the case this season.

Considering all my words above, I fail to see how using Rickie as an 'impact substitute' can ever lead to him scoring more goals than if he is on the pitch for the whole match. I also believe that Rickie would have 'held the ball up' much better up front than was happening in Saturday's match before he was on the pitch.

Regarding Rickie's goal against Norwich, scoring goals is only one of his strengths and it showed yet again what he can do. Mauricio was fortunate, of course, that Rickie scored, but that is sometimes the sort of thing that happens when a manager makes a substitution. It isn't always the case.

What really matters much more is that Saints won. We have a young squad, so I think it likely that our players will continue improving the more they gain playing experience at Premier League and international levels. That can only help our academy players in their improvement and progression into the first team squad.

I firmly believe that things are going fantastically well for Saints throughout the club and that the best is yet to come. Roll on the rest of this season and seasons to come!

It seems that there are so many comments about the Saints Who I admire, most of which I am pleased, however the comments I see on the day to day news are so derogatory with people making so many stupid remarks, you the ECHO are doing a great job which I admire so much, please can you not print the remarks that incriminate your news.
It appears that there are a great deal of lonely low life old men with nothing better to do than make stupid comments on most of your news, as I live in Thailand it is good for me to catch up on the local news from my home town

Exactly! The game evolves as clever managers like Mourinho and Rodgers study their opposition and make changes accordingly. Poch has to learn to do the same - he too needs to learn and grow in order to get us into the top four.
Youth and exuberance are on our side - in five years we will have a monster of a squad.

I am not getting the drift of what you are trying to say here, if you are referring to the posts on this discussion site, the Daily Echo provide an outlet for people to air their views, the DE create threads from the News about the Club, the DE doesn't have a censorship policy on what is posted, they will remove anything that breaks the rules, but freedom of speech means that anyone can post an opinion whether it is right or wrong, good or bad, it is up to others to agree or disagree as is their right. In general most posters stick to the thread and post stuff relevant to the subject in hand. It occasionally gets heated and opinionated, I don't have a problem with that as long as personal abuse isn't used. If there is a post you don't like there is a facility to report it, if it breaches the rules i.e.
Do not post anything that is false, abusive or malicious. WUMming and Trolling can be a nuisance but isn't always a breach of the rules.

It appears that there are a great deal of lonely low life old men with nothing better to do than make stupid comments on most of your news, as I live in Thailand it is good for me to catch up on the local news from my home town[/p]
WUMming and Trolling can be a nuisance but isn't always a breach of the rules.[/p]
And don't forget that Skunt bashing is always acceptable as long as it suitably demeans them and reminds them where they are and deserve to be.[/p]
I find that amusing but apart from a bit of teasing never went in for it that much, I have no love for anything skate, it is refreshing that they have enough of there own problems to worry about, it tends to keep them off of here.[/p]
Grammar Osprey, grammar... third person plural possessive... ;) SiamSaint
