WESSEX League sides Whitchurch United and Tadley Calleva both claimed draws from tricky away games on Saturday.

Whitchurch drew 1-1 away at Newport (Isle of Wight) in the Premier Division, while Tadley became the first side to travel to Petersfield Town and keep a clean sheet in Division One, holding their high-flying hosts 0-0.

Both Whitchurch and Newport had chances in an open first half on the island.

The visitors saw Scott Hassell's effort cleared off the line and thought they had scored during a scramble, but the referee ruled that the ball had not crossed the line.

They took the lead before the break, making the most of a dubious penalty award for a foul on Shane Lock by the home goalkeeper, Luke Walker slotting home from the spot.

Newport came on strong at the start of the second half, with Whitchurch goalkeeper Alex Thompson pushing a fierce drive from Tom Scovell on to the post.

They pulled level from a late free-kick, Iain Seebrook's dead ball evading everyone in the area and nestling in the far corner.

Newport pressed for a late winner but the visitors held out to claim a point that left them ninth in the table.

Whitchurch are back in action tonight, taking on Division One side Petersfield in the semi-finals of the Wessex League Cup at Alresford Town's ground.

It will be the second time in four days that Petersfield have come up against a north Hampshire side, after drawing 0-0 with visiting Tadley on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Lee Parker-Hodds collected his second consecutive clean sheet for Tadley, while subs Adam Alliston and James Tennant so nearly gave the visitors all three points.

The only down side to the game saw Spencer Barlow stretchered off with a minute remaining, with what turned out to be strained knee ligaments.

Manager Danny Dolan was delighted with his side's performance and said: “The team showed great attitude and commitment and we could well have nicked it late on.”

Tadley, who sit seventh in the table, are also in action again tonight, travelling to Pewsey Vale.
