CALUM Chambers will revert to his usual right back position when Saints step out at Selhurst Park tomorrow.

The versatile player lined up in central defence for Noel Blake’s England under-19s against Turkey at Chester on Wednesday.

And Blake, a bruising centre back during his playing days at Pompey and Birmingham, believes Chambers could play in a central role all the time.

Blake said: “Chambers is in the first team at Saints at the moment and is doing very very well. “He can [play at centre back] all the time, but obviously that’s not my decision.

“He’s played wide right and centre midfield and always turned out accomplished performances.

“I personally think long term that Calum will make an excellent centre half.

“He’s doing very well at right back but he’s got very good reading of the game and is very clever.

“The reason why I selected him as a centre back is because I know what he’s like getting back and forward in the right back position.

“I brought him off at half-time (Saints colleague Harrison Reed coming on in his place for his England under-19 debut) because I know he has a game on Saturday.”

Blake also picked out Saints striker Sam Gallagher for praise after the 3-0 win against Turkey. He said of the under-21 debutant: “Sam made a terrific contribution tonight.

“He’s not your average tall centre forward, he’s got very good feet, and he’s fitted really well into the group.”

Blake also made mention of Harrison Reed and Matt Targett’s performances. “Harrison’s passing was excellent,” he reported.

“When he came on at half-time, he was able to get the ball down and create – very competitive and great spirit. “Tags (Targett) did well, when it was tight he found space to move forward.

“All of them should be proud of their performances.”

Well we should be playing both as clyne is dangerous going forward and i think saints are much more and attacking force with him..The defence doesnt know which side we will attack and we have more options.Where to play him, cant drop Lovren or Fonte (unless jose starts **** up),I read that started life as midfield player ...give him a try in Davis place. What with wardy reed tagett coming thro competition is gonna be fierce for places.

Martin Keown also mentioned the possibility of Chambers playing as a CB. Nice to know he's been tried in that position and impressed someone who made a living as a CB.
Have to wonder what thoughts are going through Clyne's mind, at present.
IMO, had he been playing every week, for Saints, he would have been in the England squad, with the other four this week. Actually, despite not playing, he SHOULD still have been in the squad.

I'm pleased for the lad, he's a good player and deserve his chance. But keeping NC out of the right back position? NC gives us width and pace and opportunities to turn defenders. Isn't that what we need just dominating possession isn't enough. We don't get as much of that with Chambers - good defender that he is. MP is great and I enjoy watching us play but this I can't understand. Ultimately we will pay a price because NC will (rightly) want to leave the club and there are plenty of big clubs who will take him on.

I think Southampton should also qualify as a factory. How do we keep producing all these fine footballers. England, as a Football team, has an exciting future.
