BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s ladies’ first team returned to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over visiting Surbiton.

The home side scored twice in each half to take the win, but goalkeeper Gemma Carswell had to be on her toes to restrict a young Surbiton side to just one goal.

Basingstoke started well as Fi Holdcroft and Jo Pett went close early on, before Clare Keenan opened the scoring.

Five minutes later, Roxy O’Dea’s fierce direct short-corner strike found the back board to make it 2-0 at half-time.

After the break, Surbiton had a string of short corners, but the home defence, back stopped by Carswell, kept them out.

Basingstoke extended their lead as Claire Bowman found Catriona Bausor in space. She drew the goalkeeper and then squared the ball for the onrushing Chrissy Waller to slot into an empty net.

Surbiton opened their account with a couple of minutes to go, but the home side had the final word as Pett scored in the final seconds.

The men’s second team also found their winning touch, as they beat Southampton University 4-1.

Clinton Douglas opened the scoring as he pounced on a visitors’ mistake.

The University side equalised thanks to a lucky deflection from a short corner.

Douglas restored the Basingstoke lead before the break.

After the interval, Douglas profited from a stunning cross-field pass from Mark Hogan and fed Paul Handley to score.

The result was put beyond doubt with 10 minutes left as, from a short corner, Ashe Perman scored with a reverse-stick shot from close range.

The Vikings scored three times in the second half in their 3-1 win over visiting Poole Dolphins as Eliot Boyd netted a brace, while Paul Bonser weighed in with a single.

Elsewhere in the club, there was wins for the men’s fourths, 1-0 over Alton, and the ladies’ thirds, 2-0 at Waterside.

The men’s first team suffered a 3-2 defeat by HAC, and the thirds travelled to Aldershot and Farnham, where they drew 4-4.

The ladies’ seconds were beaten 3-2 by Andover and the fourth team put together a strong performance against league leaders Fareham, before going down 2-0. The fifths lost 2-1 to Romsey.

A hat-trick from Ben Shaughnessy helped the men’s first team secure their place in the semi-final of the England Hockey Vase, as they beat visiting Solihull Blossomfield 3-0 last Sunday.

Shaughnessy scored with a close-range flick before the break and then added another two goals after the interval.

The girls’ under-14 team also booked a semi-final place, as Heidi Barker netted the winner from a short corner in their 1-0 win over Winchester in the Hampshire Under-14 Cup.
