Saints beaten by rampant Liverpool

Basingstoke Gazette: Goalscorers Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez celebrate victory at St Mary's Goalscorers Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez celebrate victory at St Mary's

Saints succumbed to their first home defeat to Liverpool in 11 years as they were beaten 3-0 by the title chasers at St Mary’s.

In a game of multiple chances Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and an injury time penalty from Steven Gerrard inflicted defeat upon Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

A win earlier in the day for Newcastle meant Saints slipped four points off of eighth place in the table.

For Liverpool a tilt at the crown had never been part of Brendan Rodgers' plan this season, but their recent form has given them a real chance of a first championship since 1990.

The latest victory at Saints - the only side to have won at Anfield this season - earned the Reds a win which sees them climb above Manchester City and Arsenal.

It was the ideal start to a run of three successive away matches, with Suarez marking his 100th league appearance for the Reds by ending his an unusual barren run after just 16 minutes.

Saints did not wilt, though, with Adam Lallana hitting the post after a Rickie Lambert flick-on, before Luke Shaw, impressing in front of watching England manager Roy Hodgson, went on a marauding run which ended with Jay Rodriguez forcing Simon Mignolet into a fine save.

Mauricio Pochettino's side were made to pay for those missed opportunities after the break, as Sterling, one of the nine players on display called up for England duty this week, netted seconds after coming off the bench.

Suarez provided the assist for that goal and was involved in Liverpool's third, earning the stoppage-time penalty lashed home by Steven Gerrard.

The Uruguay international looked like he would score just six minutes into the match after a wonderful squared ball by Daniel Sturridge, only for a timely interception by Jose Fonte.

One-time Southampton target Philippe Coutinho sent a hopeful volley into the side-netting as Liverpool's bright start continued, before Rodriguez bundled an effort wide.

The hosts called for a penalty after a Jon Flanagan shoulder-barge on Lallana. Those appeals fell on deaf ears and Liverpool capitalised, opening the scoring after 16 minutes.

Having cut out Sturridge's attempt to link up with Suarez, the ball took a fortuitous touch off Fonte into the latter's path, with him continuing to wonderfully steer past Artur Boruc.

It was a fine strike and one which appeared to kick-start Saints as Lambert fired over and Glen Johnson cut out a threatening Calum Chambers cross, before Lallana hit the base of the post.

Neat team play ended with Chambers crossing from the right to Lambert, whose deft touch under pressure put through Lallana, only for the playmaker's close-range prod to come back off the far post.

The Saints captain again had an attempt before Morgan Schneiderlin turned over as Saints continued in the ascendancy.

A venomous low Suarez strike was all Liverpool had to show after the goal, which would have been cancelled out before half-time but for the fine reactions of Mignolet.

Showing why he was called-up by England this week, Shaw went on a fine run forward and sent in a low cross that, having been stepped over by Lambert, allowed Rodriguez to strike on goal, with the Belgian goalkeeper impressively clawing the ball away.

Keen to turn their dominance into a goal, Gaston Ramirez replaced Steven Davis for a second half that saw Schneiderlin have the hosts' first attempt just 70 seconds in.

Rodriguez saw a shot blocked by Martin Skrtel and Mignolet held a Lallana effort, but Liverpool's defence was holding firm.

The same could not be said for the home side's, with Suarez the architect as the Reds doubled their advantage in the 58th minute.

Turning his man when latching onto a ball through, the Uruguay international selflessly cut back for Sterling to slot home seconds after coming off the bench.

The strike put Liverpool clear and saw them play with increased confidence for the remainder of the match.

Suarez slipped through Sturridge with 69 minutes on the clock, only for him to put wide as he looked to net for a ninth successive match.

Jordan Henderson shot wide and Gerrard saw an effort tipped wide by Boruc, who had to be alert to stop Suarez's audacious attempt direct from the resulting corner sneaking home.

The 27-year-old had another attempt soon after as Liverpool continued to attack, before earning a stoppage-time penalty.

Suarez was caught by a Fonte's flailing leg, with Gerrard stepping up to lash home from the spot to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea.

Spot on. Jayrod needs to put his foot through the ball sometimes not just try to pass it into the goal. Centre of defence was embarrassing at times. But the build up play was good and so was the possession, isn't it always. I think if we had beaten Sunderland we could have got three points at West Ham and one out of Liverpool. We are paying the price for not fielding a strong side in the cup and losing our momentum.

Saints were lambs to the slaughter. Too many schoolboys making school boy errors, full-backs in particular. Only Fonte and Lovren saved us from an avalanche of goals. Rodriguez simply squanders chances, does not know how to hit a football. Only Lambert can hit a ball, but his body language shows there is something deeply wrong about the way we play. He seems to be playing out of position, and is obviously not happy. How we can leave Clyne out I do not know. I despair.

Absolutely, we didn't get a decision all afternoon, had not one favourable bounce of the ball, the Wanayama booking was for a block tackle not even a foul imo. Failure to take chances was crucial, but we weren't three goals worse than them.

Agreed. A charge in the shoulder blades is also not a shoulder charge. Mind you we still need to score more.

I have maintained for the last two seasons Saints lack a clinical natural goal poacher. If we had a striker in the 20+ goals per season class then I think that would take some pressure of the defence. As a defender it must add to the pressure of your own game knowing your team are struggling to turn goal scoring opportunities into goals and any slip by you could cost you the game.

For once George I agree with you, I said elsewhere that losing at Sunderland would create a losing mentality, It casts the seeds of doubt and will be hard to shake off, however we have a great opportunity at the Palace next week, it just needs a bit of belief and a bit of shooting practice and I think we will be fine. We are a better side than what todays performance would seem to indicate. Just hope Luke gets a chance against Denmark and doesn't suffer from stage fright, I don't think he is the sort that will let us down given the opportunity.

Yeah, but if you've noticed, the Premier League has a rule: Gerrard gets to take one penalty every match. The rule was put in to stop Kenny Dalgleish/Brendan Rodgers from causing more flooding in England with his tears.

Lallana is never going to get a penalty that way because he plays too light, doesn't know enough to get his body low when in front of the defender, and draw the foul. If he gets low, the guy has to plow through him and it is an obvious foul and penalty. But, because he plays high and light and hits the ground too easy, the trailing ref will think he is being conned. Adam has to learn to play like a man because he is playing against men. But, apparently that's too much to ask Poch and his pals to teach these boys. Go on boys, throw your toys...

Personally, I don't think the push was a penalty but, given how little we've had from refs this season, I'd have taken it. As I said at the time, I've certainly seen plenty given for far less ............ and low and behold, in the 93rd minute, the ref (and most in the media it would seem) were bedazzelled by that cheating, diving kn0b. Fonte stayed put as he is entitled to. He made No attempt to foul or block Shitez.

Although, as I have said, I don't think he got all of them wrong, here's some key decisions that the ref gave against Saints today:
1. The arm in Luke's face - no foul, no card. Clash of heads? What game was the match-thread reporter watching?
2. The 'shoulder badge' which didn't result in a penalty.
3. Sturridge's clear and VERY embarrassing dive for a penalty. No booking.
4. Gerrard's tackle (early in the second half) from behind on Adam, in which Gerrard took the ball - and Adam. No foul, no card. Which is fine but ......
5. Wanyama's booking for taking the ball in the same fashion as Gerrad had.
6. The penalty, when he should have booked the cheating little buck-teethed g!t.

And THAT was one of the better refs this season ffs!

I despair.

Tony Robertson, Stranraer (currently in So'ton)
Can't agree. Thought Luke Shaw played really well. I would also prefer to see Clyne but Chambers did ok. Rodriguez was a real handful, but Lambert looked tired and his lack of pace is a concern.

Agree. That push in the back was a penalty.
Go on boys, throw your toys...
mentally challenged, can I ask you a quick question or two?
good.

where do you go during the week?
why do you feel the need to abuse players and fans alike? your first post was abusive!
why do you tell us all to throw our toys out of the pram? its almost as if your saying provocative things to add that just to get a reaction.
and lastly, but most importantly for me
Why didn't you congratulate the players for their international call ups?
do you not think their deserved? if so why, and why have you not mentioned it?

Why are you still attacking this poster who is nothing but positive. Have you not learned anything recently?
You know I dislike his style, I don't like shouting on line, there is a skate doing the same on the game thread. I don't like his abusive attitude, I support his positive rabelrousing, no harm in that. I was just asking what this veiled threat meant. If it was Liverpool fans misbehaving we have stewards to deal with that. If they got up his nose because they were celebrating their teams performance that is not a problem, however what were they doing in the Saints area anyway? There were several Scousers in my area too, but they behaved OK except arriving five minutes after kick off, out five minutes before the break, and back five minutes after the second half kicked off and left five minutes before the end. Why do people do this it annoys me more than shouters on the web.
No point in thumbs downing me I don't take any notice any more.

EL Hablo: I'll answer you again, but for the last time, because it's not worth my time or that of other fans. I signed up here to talk football, and I was immediately attacked by you and others for not mindlessly hero-worshiping everything and everyone at St. Mary's. I think that hero-worship is for 9 year olds, and is unseemly and undignified in adults. This forum does not belong to you, Blow-hard Bill, Osprey or any of the others who wish to pass judgement on who is, and who is not, a "real" fan. You won't engage in football talk because you're too busy being aggrieved because I said something negative about your heroes. Now, I know that there is a lot to like about Lallana, but he is a young player with a hell of a lot to learn about the game if he wants to be long-term success in the Premier League. Go watch the replay: Lallana, because he is afraid of physical contact, stuck his toe in and clanged the ball right off Fonte to Suarez, who would have been offside if that ball were played in by a Liverpool player. That move by Lallana was both cowardly and idiotic. You just don't toe poke a ball straight into the middle of your own penalty area. One more thing: the players don't need anyone congratulating them on this forum and are very likely to be unaware that anyone in particular has congratulated them on this forum. Neither you nor anyone else should expect an ego-boost or a pat on the back for doing so. Now, if you wish to talk football and not slag off anyone and everyone who says a critical word about your heroes, I'm happy to do so. I noticed in the post above that you, again, failed to respond to my football critique of Lallana and chose to whine some more about how unfair it is that I made the critique. You're whining because you want to hero-worship without being reminded that your heroes "have feet of clay;" i.e. they are human like you and I, and they are flawed. Stop attacking me for talking football and I'll stop mocking you and your pals as know-nothings. Happy to respond.

I know you meant shoulder barge in point 2 and I lost count how many times Corky received a nudge in the small of his back as he challenged for the ball, is this not a foul any more when carried out by Saints opposition? We should have had three corners not given at the Kingsland end, and no way was JRod offside on one occasion when the lino who was ten yards behind waved. Whoever said that decisions equal out over a Season has got it dreadfully wrong about us so far this Season.

Agreed. A charge in the shoulder blades is also not a shoulder charge. Mind you we still need to score more.
Agree. That push in the back was a penalty.

Could have been worse we could have had Scott Mathieson today, 2 yellows for the home team, 4 yellows and three reds for the away team in a 1 1 Draw, who was the centre of attention in that one?

1. I think that Suarez is one of the best players I've ever seen
2. As fans we could learn a lot from the Liverpool supporters, possibly the best support I've seen at St. Mary's. Loud, good songs, sang in unison, totally behind their team..
No songs about any other team, no songs denigrating us, our team, or our city..
Just songs in praise of their own team, players and manager ( I've been to the kop a few times and it's slightly different when they're at home). But it's how it should be, other teams don't matter, support our team, support The Saints

Agree. That push in the back was a penalty.
Go on boys, throw your toys...
mentally challenged, can I ask you a quick question or two?
good.

where do you go during the week?
why do you feel the need to abuse players and fans alike? your first post was abusive!
why do you tell us all to throw our toys out of the pram? its almost as if your saying provocative things to add that just to get a reaction.
and lastly, but most importantly for me
Why didn't you congratulate the players for their international call ups?
do you not think their deserved? if so why, and why have you not mentioned it?
you understand that I ask these questions with no malice or name calling but as a fully signed up badge wearing happy clapper!
Happy to respond.
again with the abuse!
I wont talk football with you because from your very first post you were abusive to fans and players!
you then don't like it when, because you handed out abuse, you got some back.
if you don't like the fire.......
I am more than happy to criticise the players when its deserved, however you started attacking lalla in the first half before their goal, a first half in which every pundit and expert said that he was by far the best player on the pitch! now you moan and condemn the `hero worshipers` and `happy clappers` because we know nothing about football, yet you alone have abused and criticised lalla in the first half. so why should I think you have any decent knowledge of football when you stand alone against not only the fans but the experts as well? simple answer, I don't.
the reason I asked why you didn't bother to congratulate our internationals was because we had 5 players called up at U21/19 level and these forums are read by those players and their families, and yes I do know that as a fact!, so it would have been nice if you could have been bothered to join in the congratulations so that the players know how much they are appreciated. players are aware of these forums, they do own computers they can read and they have families who see them as well, look at comments by players, who were attacked on these forums as saints, after they have left.
its easy to have a dig and a go at the players when they make mistakes, but its just as easy to congratulate them for doing well and having that shown in international call ups.

Ha! I quite like the idea of a shoulder badge. I guess it's a bit like that thing you wear to show that you're not allowed to bring your arms into the ground. You know, an ARM BANNED!

I'm a huge Python fan, Ospers, hence my comment. The 'amongst our weaponry' bit, of course, coming after this little Michael Palin gem:
'NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise ... surprise and fear ... fear and surprise ... Our two weapons are fear and surprise ... and ruthless efficiency ... Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency ... and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope ... Our four ... no, amongst our weaponry ... etc.'

Thinking about it, that weaponry - fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency and a typically scouse love of all things papist - was probably what undid us today.

I was at the game as always, a game we could and should of won if we had taken our chances. All the games have been the same lately bags of possesion bags of missed chances. J R must be taken aside and taught too kick the ball instead of always side footing the dam thing. He could be a very good player , its just at the moment he wants to many chances to get on the score sheet.
IMO , we are not playing the pressing game we were playing at the start of the season. We are still having more of the ball than the other side but we are so slow and predictable going forward that it gives them time to adjust and counter when we do eventually get into the final third of the pitch. Liverpool had less of the ball and yet scored three goals. Aston Villa had less of the ball and yet scored three goals. Spurs had less of the ball and yet scored three goals. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO LEARN???. When we have the ball, get it FORWARD quicker and we need to SHOOT to SCORE.
Europa League, not this year. F A Cup, not this year. Top eight , not this year. Relegation , not this year. So lets give the young lads more game time, more experience and get ourselfs in better shape for next season. I LOVE RICKIE for what he has done for our club but IMO he is not the same force he was. Lets try playing Wanyama as the NORMAN HUNTER in front of our back four. Play Spiderman and Jack Cork in front of him . A L in front of them and two up front like the two Liverpool boys tonight. We need too turn possesion into goals or we will not break into the top six bracket. I think we have shown this season we can hold our own in this league but , it won't be as exciting as being in the top six or fighting relegation. I hope i am not coming across as a negative fan but i do feel we need to change the way we are playing at the moment. I can not recall too many goals scored from the half way line where most of our possesion takes place.
Off to Palace next week which will be another tough game but one we can win. STID.

Agreed. A charge in the shoulder blades is also not a shoulder charge. Mind you we still need to score more.
Agree. That push in the back was a penalty.
Go on boys, throw your toys...
mentally challenged, can I ask you a quick question or two?
good.

where do you go during the week?
why do you feel the need to abuse players and fans alike? your first post was abusive!
why do you tell us all to throw our toys out of the pram? its almost as if your saying provocative things to add that just to get a reaction.
and lastly, but most importantly for me
Why didn't you congratulate the players for their international call ups?
do you not think their deserved? if so why, and why have you not mentioned it?
you understand that I ask these questions with no malice or name calling but as a fully signed up badge wearing happy clapper!
Happy to respond.
again with the abuse!
He scored no goals in the game, first half or otherwise, and the only goal he set up was Suarez's goal... :) Yet you keep on, keeping on...

He scored no goals in the game, first half or otherwise, and the only goal he set up was Suarez's goal... :) Yet you keep on, keeping on...
Your right he didn't scoreany goals, and thats the only thing you have been right about!
'He set up Suarez's goal'? You keep keeping on about that, and that he's a girl and a coward, he didn't set up the goal and anyone who really thinks he did is an absolute fool! What he did was to get his foot to the ball before the opposition managed to trying to pass it passed Fonte to another defender and safety, it bounced off of fontes knee straight to Suarez. To 'set HP's Suarez he would have had to deliberately passed it to him!
Does a player have to score goals in a game to be classed as good by you then?
No one said he was man of the match, he did run Suarez a close second though, what I said was that you were on his back before the Suarez goal and all game. Despite the fact that he had an excellent first half, was unlucky to not score, and was universally proclaimed the best player in that half!
Goalkeepers don't often score many goals yet they get voted man of the match, sometimes after conceding a goal, should they not be awarded that accolade?
You aging fail to congratulate any of our players for their call ups, why? I've told you that they either read or hear a lot of what is said on hear and yet nothing!
Just for the record I don't believe that you signed on here to talk about football, you weren't immediately attcked by myself and others for not ,in your words 'mindlessly hero worshipping everything and everyone at st Marys'. You in your very first post, IE before anyone had the chance to 'attack' you, were aggressive and abusive towards others on here and the team and you have continued to do so ever since. Thats why the regulars on here took a dislike to what you posted, I say regulars because they post on here win lose or draw and most days, I've been on here since saints were brought by st Markus and know others have been for longer. I don't agree with all of them but I respect them and their views because they are respectful. whilst some like you only turn up when we are doing badly or when their are negative stories to moan about, are abusive to others and the club/players and then get even more abusivewhen you are called out.
I don't believe you are a saints fan as nothing you have ever posted has led me to believe you are. Have you ever been to st Marys? Did you enjoy it? What was it like?

I wont talk football with you because from your very first post you were abusive to fans and players! you then don't like it when, because you handed out abuse, you got some back. if you don't like the fire....... I am more than happy to criticise the players when its deserved, however you started attacking lalla in the first half before their goal, a first half in which every pundit and expert said that he was by far the best player on the pitch! now you moan and condemn the `hero worshipers` and `happy clappers` because we know nothing about football, yet you alone have abused and criticised lalla in the first half. so why should I think you have any decent knowledge of football when you stand alone against not only the fans but the experts as well? simple answer, I don't. the reason I asked why you didn't bother to congratulate our internationals was because we had 5 players called up at U21/19 level and these forums are read by those players and their families, and yes I do know that as a fact!, so it would have been nice if you could have been bothered to join in the congratulations so that the players know how much they are appreciated. players are aware of these forums, they do own computers they can read and they have families who see them as well, look at comments by players, who were attacked on these forums as saints, after they have left. its easy to have a dig and a go at the players when they make mistakes, but its just as easy to congratulate them for doing well and having that shown in international call ups.[/p]
He scored no goals in the game, first half or otherwise, and the only goal he set up was Suarez's goal... :) Yet you keep on, keeping on...[/p]
What was it like? el caballo santos101

It didn't look to me that Fonts fouled him. He was standing there with both feet on the ground and Suarez decided he'd like to deliberately catch his foot on Fonte' s leg. He's a crafty so and so and the ref was fooled.

STID.
WELL DONE HEDGE END BOB.

SEE YOU AT PALACE AWAY - WHERE WE MUST BE MORE EFFECTIVE - TAKE OUR CHANCES AND WIN AWAY.

If the Coach gets in early - see you at the Pub with the other SAINTS SUPPORTERS ON THE HIGH STREET.

I have to say these performances are getting a bit boring, same old.We only play one way, we don't move the ball quick enough, don't get behind teams enough and when we do the final ball is terrible. All these balls into feet and flicks look lovely when they pay off but we sometimes try to play in spaces which are not there. We also need some impact players coming off the bench.I would love us to win playing ugly sometimes. Goals win matches not side passes.

Agree. Some of the Players looked short on energy yesterday.

MUST HAVE A PLAN B TO OUR PLAY AND WIN OUR GAMES AT HOME.

No thanks, I would love someone with his football skills, but not the baggage that goes with it, besides we couldn't afford him.

SOME OF THE PLAYERS LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE PROTECTING THEMSELVES FROM INJURY SO THAT THEY DIDN'T MISS THEIR INTERNATIONAL DUTIES. Both sides mind.
