YOUNG Basingstoke and Mid Hants runner Rebecca Poole continued her excellent form with a dramatic victory in the final race of the Hampshire Cross Country League season.

Poole was one of several runners from the Down Grange club who made the trip to a muddy Hudson’s Field, in Salisbury, for the meeting.

Competing in the under-13 race, Poole managed to edge ahead in the final stages to beat Wimborne runner Grace Copeland by the narrowest of margins, the two girls stopping the clock at exactly the same time.

The result meant that Poole finished third overall in the league standings, while there was more good news in the team event. Rebecca Bullock finished seventh, Tayla Wegg 12th and Zoe Frost 13th to give Basingstoke the team win on the day, leaving them second overall.

Lucy Wildash was second in the under-15 race, finishing just four seconds behind the winner, to claim third place overall. Maddie Deadman was fifth on the day.

Gemma Wildash was the fourth under-17 home, with Freya Davis sixth and Caitlin Cooper 19th, giving Basingstoke team victory on the day.

Charlotte Chalwin was fifth in the senior women’s race, helping Basingstoke to fifth place in the team event, both on the day and overall.

On the men’s side, Jermaine Mays was ninth, Dave Ragan 10th and Alex Hamilton 19th in the senior race, giving the Basingstoke team third place both on the day and overall. Mays was second overall, with Ragan seventh.

James Beeks finished sixth in the under-15 race, claiming sixth place overall as a result, with Harry Richardson 16th on the day.

Callum Cleary was 11th in the under-17 race, while Ollie Butler, who did not race in Salisbury, was sixth overall. Joe Gasson was 19th in the under-13 event, a result that left him 10th overall.
