Paine backs Lallana and Shaw for Cup

Basingstoke Gazette: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Terry Paine insists Adam Lallana is a certainty to make England’s World Cup squad – and he thinks Luke Shaw should also be given the opportunity to put his case forward for a place in Brazil.

Saints captain Lallana was handed his international debut earlier this season, impressing in friendly matches against Chile and Germany at Wembley, prompting manager Roy Hodgson to describe him as a “major find”.

Since making his England bow last November, the midfielder’s form with his club has been scintillating.

And Paine, right, reckons it would be a travesty if he is not in the final squad for the World Cup.

“He’s an absolute certainty to go,” said Saints’ honorary president. “I would be so surprised if he isn’t picked.

“He ranks right the way up there, in terms of creative midfielders that England have.

“He’s natural, he floats over the ground, he’s reasonably quick, and he looks likely to score.

“I don’t see many in midfield who look likely to do that, except perhaps (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain.”

Paine also believes that 18-year-old left-back Shaw should be given the chance to prove himself in next month’s home friendly against Denmark – the last match before the provisional squad is announced.

“I still think he can make it,” said Saints’ all-time record appearance holder. “He would certainly be one that I would be looking at. For me, he has to be in the running.

“I would certainly be calling him up for the friendly before the World Cup. He’s as good as, if not better than, what we’ve got at left-back.”

Paine, who is also confident that Rickie Lambert remains in a strong position to make the squad, reckons there is a good chance that Saints could send three players to the World Cup.

“If we took three, it wouldn’t surprise me,” he said. “I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

“Looking at their form, and the positions they all play, I just see that being possible.”

The Saints legend also believes that, despite a disappointing debut against Chile, in-form Jay Rodriguez’s outstanding club form has kept his hopes alive.

“I was disappointed with him when he played (against Chile), if I’m honest,” said Paine, who also believes that Nathaniel Clyne, and even fellow right-back Calum Chambers, are not far away from the senior team.

“He certainly didn’t play with the freedom that he does for Southampton, but maybe that was down to orders – I don’t know.

“I just felt he didn’t do his chances any good on that one performance, but if you’re talking about league form then he’s as good as anybody.

“He will again be in the thoughts, but maybe he’s not got quite as strong a case as the others do.

“He’s done brilliantly, though, to put himself back in Roy’s thoughts.”

I just hope Roy Hodgson is brave enough to pick a winning team, not the old has beens.

He really should take Shaw in place of Cole, as cover for Baines. It would be great experience for him and we all know he could do the job and in four years time the left back spot will be his anyway.

Lallana has to be a cert he has been an outstanding player, head and shoulders above any other English midfielder.

Clyne would also be a good pick, he is probably better or no different to what England currently have.

Rickie and Jay also deserve a chance, both better than Welbeck and co.

Lalz is nailed on - only injury will stop him getting to Brazil.

Rickie's future is in his hands - start popping them in and that 4th striker place is his. And he's got every opportunity given he'll probably be starting every game.

Jay-Rod's chances depend on how much Roy sees of him. His craft and guile isn't always immediately obvious as he's a man who will always side foot and place a shot rather than put his laces through it, but that doesn't make him lightweight. Roy needs to see that for himself, but I think Welbeck might get the nod as the 'agile striker who can also play out wide'. And after the amazing season United have had who could argue?

Luke should go but I fear Cole will get a pointless last hurrah in his place.

That's what I reckon, anyhow.

Sadly I think Roy will be playing the sentiment card with the likes of Cole, Gerrard, lampard etc..... They have all been part of Englands failures over the last decade or so and will be given the chance to put things right.
Everybody knows that this will not work, so I don't see the reason for this lot to play their last ever international games at such an important competition. The old guard will let us down..... guaranteed, be brave Roy, take a risk and you never know.

Exactly, the old guard have failed before they will fail again. Time for Riy to be brave and do the right thing.

People always talk about how disappointing Jay's debut was however he had no chance to succeed in that game. Everyone in the England team was disappointing. We really shouldn't be losing to Chile especially in our own back yard.

It seemed to me that the old guard did everything possible NOT to pass to JRod, Adam succeeded because he put himself about and practically forced them to pass to him…

…the elephant in the room though is the cosy big club relationship brokered between media and fashionable or London club.

Carroll being a case in point, he is a big lump and other than jumping and a fierce shot is not in the class of SRL HOWEVER a few goals and assists will see the media demanding him on the plane even if SRL scores more and makes every other goal.

we all know that the same old faces will get picked, the always do, and unless things change England will continue to fail.
lampard wont even play half of chelskis games this season, because they think hes to old to play week in week out, yet he will go to brazil and be expected to play all 3 of the group games, and then more if we get out of the group.
gerrad has dropped back and doesn't go so far forwards or into so many attacks anymore, this is because he lacks the engine he used to have and again that's because of age.
cole has hardly played for chelski this season, injury has played a part but age and Jose thinking hes not good enough is another factor.
wellbad has his England place because he plays for manure, j-od has scored more league goals this season. 7 of welbads 8 league goals have come against lower league teams, with the other against spuds, he does seem to struggle to score against `big` teams.
cleverley and phil jones from manure are having very poor seasons but both are likely to go.
Hart is also having a `mare` this season and has been dropped by mancy for quite a few games, he will however be the starting keeper for England.
with so many of our `stars` getting dropped for so many games by their clubs at least they will be `fit` for brazil and wont be able to use to same old excuse that its been `a long hard season`.
we all know we cant win this world cup, so why take players who have failed to produce every time they have gone to any tournament. why not take the younger players and give them the experience of playing in big tournaments without any pressure on them? the media need to lay off of the team as well. how many times do they dig up dirt on the manager or players just before tournaments, only then to moan at them for playing badly?
come on roy, buck the trend and pick the inform/younger players.

I think Roy has already said that there will be no experiments in the next friendly, which indicates that he has pulled on the blinkers and isn't willing to consider other players, irrespective of form.
Shame on him, if that is the case.
He already knows what Cole, Carrick, Walker, Johnson, Gerrard and Lampard bring to the squad, and they have played together on countless occasions, so don't need to get to understand each other's way of playing. So, with that in mind, and acting as a kick up the backside to all those EXPECTING to go, why not experiment with some form players?

Shaw at left back.
Clyne at right back.
Cork as the holding midfield player, allowing Gerrard to get forward.
Lallana and Lambert, should also be in the team/squad and I still see no reason why JRod shouldn't be given another chance, although it will probably be after the World Cup.

Fact is, we don't expect to win, the World Cup, and everybody is always bemoaning the lack of experience, of big tournaments, our young players have, so why not take the best young players as back up, so that they can gain that experience?
