TOTALLY Tennis Mini Performance player Isla Hignett won the Girls 10-and-under singles title at the Surrey Junior Tournament at Virgin Active Surrey Health and Racquets Club, in Croydon.

Hignett received a bye in the first round and the 10-year-old beat Kristina Paskauskaite 4-2 in the quarter-finals, Rebecca Creery 4-1 in the last four and Ayiesha Edwards 4-2 in the final.

Another mini performance player, Eduard Lakatos, enjoyed success in his first tournament at Kingsley Indoor Tennis Club.

Lakatos, who only started playing in September, is a member of the Red Squad at Hampshire Court, coached by Shyam Vithlani.

Competing in the eight and under Mixed Singles at the club in Bordon, Lakatos played in Group B, winning two matches and losing two to qualify for the final stages.

He then beat Thomas Le Marchant (11-9), Luka Williams (10-0), Evan Graham (11-9) and Lewin Myles (11-9).

In Group A, fellow mini performance player Theo Harrison, who plays in squads at the War Memorial Park centre, won three matches and lost one en route to the semi-finals.

Harrison beat Bo Edwards (10-1), Bruno Crosble (11-9) and Lily Bebbington (10-3) before he lost to Lakatos 11-9 in the semi-finals.

The Totally Tennis player then won the final as he beat Honor Whit-tome 10-4.

Harrison finished fourth after losing to Myles 12-10 in the third and fourth play-off match.

Lakatos’ coach Vithlani said: “Well done to Eddie for winning his first tournament.

“He only started playing last summer and has come a long way since then.”

l MINI Performance player Tillie Reid won the gold medal at the West Hants Orange Tour Japan Open, held at the West Hants Lawn Tennis Club in Bournemouth.

Reid won four matches in the Grade 5 event to clinch the nine-and-under girls’ singles title, beating Fern Ashton (7-5, 8-6), Martyna Ciubatiuk (7-2, 8-6), Sienna May (7-2, 7-3) and Antonia Fox (7-1, 7-1).

The previous day, Reid had a third-place finish at the nine-and-under girls singles event at the Grade 3 Bucks ITI Winter Regional Tournament Tennis at the Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre in Buckinghamshire.

In the group stages, she had two long three-set matches, beating Elina Pickerd-Barua (7-4, 4-7, 7-2) and Darcey Rowles (4-7, 7-5, 7-4).

Reid lost to Monika Todorova (7-4, 7-4), but went through to the main draw as group runner-up.

In the quarter finals, the Sherfield School pupil defeated Keya Das (7-5, 4-7, 8-6) but then lost to Maria Privalova in a close match (8-6, 7-5).

Reid completed the day, by beating Todorova again (4-7, 7-5, 7-5) in the third and fourth play-off match to finish in a respectable third place.

Totally Tennis coach Jamie Jordan said: “Tillie had a great weekend of tennis.

“After coming third in the regional tournament, she stepped up her game and played fantastic tennis to win gold at the West Hants event.

“It is great to see that all her hard work and training sessions are paying off. I am very proud of her.”
