Silver lining for Saints?

Dani Osvaldo

Dani Osvaldo’s controversial stay at Saints could net the club a profit of more than £3m if Juventus exercise their option to buy him in May.

The striker, pictured, yesterday sealed a loan move to the Serie A giants until the end of the season, with Juventus picking up his estimated £50,000 a week wage bill during that time.

They have an option to buy Osvaldo by May 31 for a set fee of €19m (£15.6m).

That would equate to Saints bagging a tasty profit of €4m (£3.3m) on a player they bought from Roma for a club record €15m (£12.2m) less than six months ago.

Osvaldo, who made 13 appearances during his brief time at Saints, scoring three goals, saw his career at St Mary’s come to an end after an alleged headbutt on teammate Jose Fonte.

That led Saints, whose only other piece of deadline day business was to complete the £1.75m sale of Jason Puncheon to Crystal Palace, to get shot of him before the window closed. “I’m very happy,” Osvaldo told Juventus club media.

“It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind and I still can’t quite believe it but I’m happy.”

“It was pleasing when I first heard of Juventus’ interest in me.

“When everything was completed last night I sat down and I couldn’t believe it.

“As I said before, it’s been a pretty hectic three or four days but I’m happy.”

Osvaldo, who joined Saints from Roma, was asked whether he had missed Italian football.

“I can honestly say I have, yes,” he replied. “When I initially left I was happy to embark on a new and exciting experience in England.

“But in the end it became something I missed.”

Osvaldo really needs to perform in the next few months to help Juve in their quest to win the Serie A title and to ensure a spot in Italy’s World Cup side. And he has serious competition for a place in their side with the likes of Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Fabio Quagliarella also vying for a striking berth.

“I want to enjoy it,” he smiled.

“In the year of the World Cup, I’m joining the greatest club in Italy and one of the finest in Europe.

“I don’t think such things happen often in life.

“I want to enjoy this experience, do my best to be involved in the World Cup and, God willing, stay here for many years.”

I think the Old Lady is pulling a fast one here. If they wanted Osvaldo, they would have stumped up the cash now. I am afraid that we are stuck with this idiot in the longer term, and will have to unload at rather less than this reported fee in the summer. To all those who posted on here telling me how wrong I was to criticise Osvaldo for his actions against Newcastle, I am awaiting your apologies in much the same way as we are still waiting for any sign of contrition from Osvaldo. I won't be holding my breath.

I certainly hope the Bellend does well and they take up their option. If not then who would want him then, who would want him at that price more to the point. We could end up losing a shed load of money...or even worse having the dick back.

It's great news that Juventus will be paying all his ridiculous wages during the loan period - contrary to reports yesterday which implied we would still be paying most of them.

If we can also make £3 million profit on the sale that will be brilliant!! But it's Juve who have the option to buy at that price, not us who have the option to sell. Maybe he'll settle in to the club, establish good relationships with his team mates, repeat his form of last season and score 15 goals in 25 games, and become their supporters' number one poster boy. Or maybe not. We'll have to wait and see.

It was quoted yesterday that Juve are paying his wages and he has taken a huge pay cut to go there. 17.5 k a week.

Osvaldo is undoubtedly a good player that we didn't see the best of but whether the sale will happen in the summer will depend on how well he plays for Juventus, after all he does want a world cup spot, if he does I think England will find him a handful. However we are well rid of a trouble maker as there is obviously a good spirit of unity in Saints squad that needs to be maintained.
We now seem to have cleared out all the players that are no longer required albeit some only temporarily without having to pay stupid money. Only Jonathan Forte left to loan out in the forth coming loan window.
Therefore we can now move on and must get clear of 40 points asap then having done so, use the remainder of the season to blood the next young players to see which ones are ready for the first team next season. MoPo will then know which positions he will need to buy for.
Looking forward to seeing more of Sam Gallagher, Harrison Reed, Lloyd Isgrove and Matt Tagart etc this season as we did with JamesWP, LukeS & CallumC at the end of last season.
Lets also see if we can go further in the FA Cup as the season still has a lot to play for, so lets get safe asap and enjoy it.

What a terrible deal in the first place. Let us hope this is it now and he has gone for good. And as for Cortese trying to sell Lambert to WHU, another stupid idea. Glad to see the back of both of them to be honest.
