TODAY we reveal the 10 north Hampshire stars in the frame for the 2013 Gazette Sports Personality of the Year award.

The winner will be picked from the shortlist below by a judging panel – but you can play your part in the process by putting the case for your favourite in the comment box below this article.

The final result will be announced at the Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards 2013, which will be held at the Apollo Hotel, in Basingstoke, on Friday, February 28.

The judges will make their final decision on February 20, so you need to have your say by then to strengthen the case for your choice.

There is plenty of competition, from a wide range of local stars and the shortlisted sportspeople, in alphabetical order, are:

Sam Argent

Basingstoke Gazette:

Footballer Argent had an exceptional year with Whitchurch United and Hartley Wintney.

His goals fired Whitchurch to promotion to the Wessex League Premier Division in the spring – and he was then a key figure as Hartley reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Dan Coombs

Basingstoke Gazette:

Cricket star Coombs enjoyed a memorable year with Basingstoke and North Hants, captaining the club to the Southern League Division Two title at the first attempt.

He averaged 45.05 with the bat, making four 50s and one century, and also took 13 wickets with his medium pace bowling.

Alex Danson

Basingstoke Gazette:

Hockey ace Danson followed up her bronze medal at the London Olympics by helping club side Reading to an unprecedented treble.

The 28-year-old also excelled on international duty, scoring the winning penalty flick as England beat the Netherlands to reach the EuroHockey final for the first time in 22 years.

Adam Davies

Basingstoke Gazette:

Basingstoke RFC fly-half Davies was his side’s key player as they won promotion to National League Three London last season.

The 22-year-old, who is also studying to become a doctor, starred as Basingstoke produced some excellent rugby to finish second in London One South before winning a promotion play-off.

Matt Goddard

Basingstoke Gazette:

Odiham boxer Goddard maintained his unbeaten record in 2013, winning all three of his fights.

The 23-year-old lightweight was especially impressive in his final bout of the year, knocking out Slovakian Julius Rasael in the opening round to make it six wins out of six in his fledgling career.

Jim Macey

Basingstoke Gazette:

Whitchurch United manager Macey had an exceptional year, leading his team to promotion to the Wessex League Premier Division.

The Jam Boys have excelled at the higher level, while they knocked Eastleigh out of the Hampshire Senior Cup on route to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Jean Maton

Basingstoke Gazette:

Powerlifer Maton recovered from the disappointment of missing out on a gold medal at the British Championships by dominating at European and world level.

The 50-year-old won four gold medals at the European Champion-ships, a feat she equalled at the Worlds later in the year.

Charlotte Purdue

Basingstoke Gazette:

The Hook runner sat out much of 2013 through injury but came back with a bang, finishing third at the Great South Run.

She went on to finish second at the British trials before claiming a bronze medal in the under-23 race at the European Cross Country Championships.

Justin Rose

Basingstoke Gazette:

2013 was a career-defining year for Hook golfer Rose, who climbed to new heights by winning his first major championship, the US Open.

The 33-year-old was incredibly consistent all season, reaching a career-high third in the world rankings, finishing 10th on the American tour and third on the European Tour.

Dean Skinns

Basingstoke Gazette:

The Basingstoke-born netminder returned to his hometown club in the summer.

He put in a string of fine displays for the Basingstoke Bison at the end of the year, recording three shut-outs and going more than 130 minutes without conceding a goal in December.
