BASINGSTOKE-BORN Simon Humberstone has achieved his dream of playing for a top rugby union side after signing for the Cardiff Blues.

The 26-year-old fly-half started his journey at Basingstoke RFC, and made his debut for ’Stoke’s first team at the age of 17 in November 2004.

Most recently, he has been turning out for Pontypridd, but has also impressed in a few games for the Blues in the PRO12 and Anglo-Welsh Cup, including last Saturday's trip to Bath.

Humberstone said: “It is a dream come true to sign a full-time contract with the Blues, and I am determined to make it a success.”

Humberstone has penned a full-time professional contract with the Welsh side until 2015.

The Basingstoke-born fly-half has already played a few games for the Blues in the Anglo-Welsh Cup and PRO12, helping them to victories over Ospreys and Munster.

Last Saturday, he kicked two penalties and a conversion in the Blues’ 24-13 loss at Bath.

He could well be on kicking duties again tomorrow, when Cardiff host Harlequins (kick-off 7.05pm) in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Humberstone’s journey to the top level of the game started at Basingstoke.

Having made his debut as a teenager in the first-team he went on to play for the Harlequins Academy.

Following a year spent playing in New Zealand with Heriot RFC, the 26-year-old returned to Britain to study at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

On completing his studies, he linked up with Pontypridd in the summer of 2010 and last year joined the Blues as fly-half cover.

On making the permanent move to Cardiff, Humberstone said: “I got a taste of what it was all about to play for Cardiff back in November and that whetted my appetite.

“Just being around world class players on a full-time basis makes you a better player.

“It's unfortunate for Rhys (Patchell) that he is out injured.

“However, it gives opportunities for players like me and Gareth Davies to put a marker down for the number 10 jersey.”
