MULTI-TALENTED Basingstoke and Mid Hants athlete Kierra Barker got her 2014 campaign off to a great start by winning a silver medal at the Southern Regional Indoor Athletics Championships.

The 16-year-old set a new indoor personal best and club record in the long jump, leaping 5.58m to finish second in the under-17 age-group.

She also competed in the shot, throwing more than a metre past her personal best, with a 10.32m effort and finishing sixth.

Several other Down Grange club members travelled to Parliament Hill, London, for the South East Cross Country Championships, with six runners claiming places in the top 30.

Under-13 Rebecca Poole was the top Basingstoke compe-titor, finishing eighth. James Beeks was 20th in the under-15 race, while Lucy Wildash the 21st under-15 girl, with Maddie Deadman 30th. Charlotte Chalwin was 27th in the under-20 event and Brendan O’Connor 29th in the under-20 race for men.
