IT WAS third time lucky for Basingstoke Hockey Club’s ladies seconds as they finally beat Alton this season, coming out 2-1 in the Hampshire Cup.

Sarah Mainprise opened the scoring as she put away Cath McCormick’s rebound.

Alton equalised, but Amy Bennett scored the winner five minutes from time to set up a tie with Eastleigh.

In league action the day before, the ladies first team travelled to Southampton and raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time thanks to Catriona Bausor, Chrissy Waller and Claire Bowman.

The home side responded with three goals of their own after the break as the game ended 3-3.

The seconds slipped behind to Aldershot and Farnham, but levelled as Nicola Burring won a short corner and Cath McCormick duly converted. However, a late goal won the game for Aldershot.

The thirds lost 5-0 to the Isle of Wight, despite some fine saves from Aoife O'Hanlon and determined play from Gill Rust.

The fourths were in the unusual position of having almost no forwards in their squad, but they still beat Petersfield 3-1.

Defender Claire Brockbank got on the scoresheet first, before Phillipa Spicer and Dayna Wegg wrapped up the scoring in the second half.

The fifths took a share of the points as they travelled to Portsmouth and Southsea, thanks to Kerry Barker’s equaliser.

The men's first team won at the Bank of England 5-3, never looking back after Ben Jubin scored their opener.

After the hosts equalised, the teams traded goals up to 3-3, as Grant Rouse and Dean Record scored for Basingstoke.

Late in the game, the away side ramped up the pressure and netted twice as Jacqueline Lauren linked-up with Rouse for his second, then Ben Shaughnessy coolly dispatched a penalty stroke.

The seconds slipped to a 4-0 defeat against visiting Bournemouth, despite defiant performances from defenders Ben Cowdrey, Rich Pulleyn and Pete Youll.

The thirds drew 2-2 against United Services Portsmouth, while the fourths beat Havant 6-2 as Ross Cavalier, Andy Collingwood, Rob Lloyd and Andy Fulton all scored.

In a home derby game, the fifth team faced off against the Vikings, and came away with the points, winning 6-2.
