Saints don't plan to replace injured duo

Saints have no plans to delve into the transfer market to buy cover for injured duo Dejan Lovren and Gastón Ramírez, according to assistant boss Jesús Pérez.

Mauricio Pochettino’s right-hand man confirmed yesterday that both players would be missing for six to eight weeks with ankle ligament damage.

Pérez said the news has not changed the view from within the club that they do not need to make any signings this month, although he did admit they would keep an eye on the market in case any interesting opportunities presented themselves.

“I think that both injuries are not serious (enough) to think to replace the players,” said Pérez.

“Some situations can change. But at the moment it is not the idea to replace these two players.”

Given the club’s position in the league table, it is quite understandable that they would have no wish to rush into any late purchases in those areas.

Saints have no relegation concerns and have drifted far enough away from the European positions to make securing one of them an increasingly unrealistic prospect.

It is, therefore, perhaps entirely prudent for them to choose to save their money unless an opportunity that is too good to miss comes forward.

The absence of Lovren for an extended spell will certainly be viewed as the greater loss, with the centre-half having been a more integral part of the team this season than former record-signing Ramírez.

However, the £12m Uruguayan had begun to show signs of impressive form recently, meaning his injury has come at a particularly frustrating time.

“We are disappointed for that, because he was doing well, he was training very hard in the last few weeks, and he was in good form,” said Pérez.

“The situation when he got the injury was because he was strong in a one-v-one, he was very, very good, and he got a clear chance to score.

“It’s a shame for him and for us, obviously, because he is an important player.”

Both Lovren and Ramírez suffered their injuries within seconds of each other during last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland.

“They’ve confirmed serious injuries, both ankles,” said Pérez. “Probably they are ruled out for six to eight weeks.

“We are trying to accelerate their recovery, and the medical staff prepared different strategies to try to recover the players as soon as possible.

“But for some weeks both are out.”

Earlier this week, the Croatian FA had announced that Lovren was expected to miss the next three-to-four weeks, but the severity of the injury is greater than that.

Pérez said: “We expected a minor injury from Dejan Lovren and more serious for Gaston, but at the end they have similar injuries – damage of ligaments.

“But we hope to recover them as soon as possible.”

Myself i think it is a perfect time too bring in a CB. I base my reasons on the fact that the two CB Yosi and Hoover, are very good Championship players but only relegation Premiership players. Now is the time to bring in another Dejan. The new player would have the rest of the season to become a SOUTHAMPTON player. Get to really know us and our suroundings. As stated it looks like we are safe from relegation but will only be using our passports to go on holiday this year. If we buy now he would be here for pre season training and all that goes with it.IMO

What of the rumours of Dani being sold?

I think we should at least try to get 'The Little Pea' in as a replacement if he does. Would guarantee goals, and give us something different...

How many games have we failed to take our chances in this season alone - Realistic target?

HEBob, its going to be a very hard job to find another Dejan. I think most of us realise what an extremely great signing he was. I remember NC saying that Dejan was the signing they didn't think they would get.

MP has strict fitness levels for players and it takes a while to drill the system into the players, so he may feel that bringing someone in now wouldn't do any good as by the time he would be ready to play them the injured players might be back.

I know what your saying about pre-season training because MP said Yoshi and Gaston weren't fit when they came back late for training, didn't he say it would take 4 weeks to get them up to standard? wont we have the same problem next season? with the world cup this year ending mid-July, that's about the same time we came back last season, so any players we might want to bring in will probably be at the world cup, so signings will have to after pre-season starts and the players will need a holiday anyway.

then again we might have spent all this years budget in the summer anyway so there might not be the money there. they might have to sell, probably Dani, to be able to buy. or the players they want might not be available yet

for the record I would love to see us bring in a new CB, at the moment we have 3 CB`s in Jose, Yoshi and Hoover. all it would take is another bad injury, Jose might have had a broken cheek bone yesterday and if that had happened next week we would only have 2. I think Yoshi could be a good player, needs game time, and most of us thought he would be ahead of Jose this season. Hoover isn't the greatest cover so I hope he`s not needed.

No good waiting for opportunities to present themselves!

The. Club needs to be proactive now to get rid of Osvaldo AND to replace him AND to get in a decent CH and a better GK than the three we currently have !

Sit back and do nothing is not an option as the injuries to DL , AB, VM and others has highlighted.

Now is the time to strengthen if KL is serious about her supporting intentions, must say I was a little worried about her short term ambitions only being stated.

Good point. The squad needs strengthening that is quite obvious. We tend to loan players out easily-Puncheon,Mayu
ka,Sharp-how about getting in a couple of players on loan ourselves.
The Osvaldo situation has made it even more imperative to seek new players. If Rickie or Jay Rod get injured or suspended then we will be relying on a rookie like Sam Gallagher and Guly. When was the last time Guly scored.Getting on for a couple of years.I think.
We are also lacking goals from central midfield..I don;t think Cork has ever scored for us.Neither Wanyama and Spyder should be hitting 10 goals a season which he isn't doing at the moment.
We have had a great season but the way we have been dominating the vast majority of the matches our points tally should be much better.
I hope that there is not a selling off of our prizze assets at the end of the season but if there is and if MP decides to go then we could be in trouble for next season. If Katharina has long term plans for the club she should be getting the chequebook out now.It is better to build from a position of strength than for a position of weakness.
Regarding the cup i hope that MP does not field a too weakened team against Yeovil because i think that the FA Cup could be our get out of jail card this season.
MP underestimated Sunderland in the League cup and we went out and they got to Wembley.A lot of people i have been talking to think that that could have been Saints big day out..
Saturday will be no walk over as Gary Johnson will have the Glovers psyched up.LocaL lad James Hayter will want to get on the score sheet even more than usual so whoever plays in our defence will have to be on top of their game.
It would have been a great game for Osvaldo to get amongst the goals but i doubt whether he will play for us ever again so if we are relying on Guly lets hope that he can rediscover the back of the net.And lets hope if Jos plays he doesn't find the back of his own net.

A new GK? I agree about getting rid of Osvaldo and bringing in another CB or bringing one up from the U21 team but Boruc for me is one of the best keepers in the league and therefore in the world....

We need a CB so it seems a shame not to get one in this window.
In fairness to Yoshida, the side improved greatly last season when he got a regular place. With a run of 32 goals in 28 games. He also was injured and did not feature in the last few games of the season none of which we won.
Yes he looked poor against Villa, was better against Cardiff but wayward distribution. The problem is he needs game time, either way I would prefer him to Hoov.
Hoov's lack of pace and inability to control or turn on the ball has proved so costly when he has played, the goal against Newcastle and debacle against Spurs all testimony of why Hoov should not play. Sorry Hoov great in our championship year but a liability in the prem.

I've given up trying to work out the logic in not thinking we can do better than Maya and Jos, Yes they served us ok in the Championship in one case and did ok last year but in Jos's case the number of avoidable own goals due to lack of positioning sense or intelligent reading of the play is concerning. Surely the harsh reality is would either Jos or Maya get into any of the first 11's of the teams below us. for me the answer is no There MUST surely be better than those 2 available if we looked hard enough. If MP is truly serious about wanting to break into the top 6 I think we need to be much more diligent and ambitious in our transfer dealings.
