BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s men’s team remain top of Hampshire/Surrey Regional Two after they saw off visiting Haslemere 3-1 last Saturday.

It was almost a disastrous start for the home side, with Haslemere being awarded an early penalty stroke.

However, fortune was not with the visitors as the shot trickled wide.

The hosts responded with intent and created several chances.

The deadlock was broken by Graham Lang’s swift drag flick, before Dean Record doubled the lead as he dispossessed a defender and fired into the roof of the net.

Basingstoke made it three early in the second half through Danny Bowden, and while the home side were forced to soak up some late pressure, they took a well-deserved win.

The second string side were pushed hard in their away clash with local rivals Tadley, but came out on top as they won 7-4.

Paul Handley, Phil Stewart, Cameron Saint, Ash Perman and Mark Easto all netted for the visitors as they moved four points clear at the top of Hampshire Division Two.

The third team thumped Andover 5-0, while the fourths slipped to a 2-1 loss at Poole.

Basingstoke V lost to visiting Alton 3-1, while Alex Simmons netted for Basingstoke as the Vikings claimed an excellent 3-0 win over Hamble.

In the ladies’ section, the first team beat Staines II 1-0.

Clare Keenan smashed home what turned out to be the winner in the first 10 minutes.

Only a sterling effort from the visiting goalkeeper stopped the hosts adding to their tally.

This weekend, the league leaders travel to promotion-chasing Southampton for a Hampshire derby.

There were disappointing results elsewhere in the club, as the second team lost 4-1 against Alton, the thirds went down 5-0 at home to Trojans III and the fourths lost 2-0 to Trojans IV.

The fifth team offered a ray of sunshine as they beat visiting Gosport 3-1, Kirsty Brown claiming a hat-trick after the home side had opened the scoring.
