Katharina Liebherr tells staff at Southampton FC the club is not for sale

Basingstoke Gazette: Katharina Liebherr Katharina Liebherr

As expected Katharina Liebherr has met Saints staff to assure them she has not become non-executive chairman to oversee an immediate sale of the club.

Liebherr addressed workers at St Mary’s today ahead of the appointment of a new chief executive to run the club on a day to day basis, which is expected to be confirmed in the early part of this week.

The Saints owner said it was business as usual following the departure of Nicola Cortese, having already stated publically that there was no intention to sell any players during the January transfer window.

Liebherr’s actions have quelled wild rumours last week that the motives behind her move were to enable a quick sale of the club.

So why did Nicola Cortese leave? If she is not planning on selling why walk out as chairman? A lot of unanswered questions here. The reason I thought he walked was because she wanted to sell and he told her to wait? Why own a club if you have no interest in football, I would prefer someone who cared for the game and wanted to develop the club further! She is in it for the money and a profit not to invest in any more players. I see Nicola Cortese coming back with backers and taking it off her - Well I hope so anyway COYR!

Just who in this world told you or anyone else tha katharina Liebherr does not like football?? Do you have her ear or know someone that does? There have been an awful lot of media driven assumptions about Misss Liebherr which i suspect may have been planted to destabilize the club and upset its supporters. Who told you she was in it for the money?? She could have sold ages ago with Cortese still on board.. Nobody buys a football club to make money, Katharina clearly is a chip off the old block except she is a lot younger, will have more energy so if she can organize her life to include being chairman of Saints so be it and good luck to her. We owe her support.Nothing she has done suggests she will not back the club. What she, quite really could not put up with, was Cortese s refusal to consult, keep her informed, and his insistence on having one hundred per cent control. it is after all her money and he was stupid enough to think he could treat her the same way as he did her father. I hope on a personal note that she enjoys her involvement with Saints, becomes a fan, and that she is elevated to Sainthood in the very near future by the Northam End. There is, I can assure her, nothing quite like it.

how do you know she wanted to sell and he wanted to wait? how do you know she has no interest in football? has she not developed the club enough? how do you know she wont develop it further? how do you know shes in it for the money? not many clubs give owners a great return.
simple answer is none of us know why NC left, and we may never know.
none of us know if KL wants to continue to own the club in the long/medium or short term, and we don't know if we will buy new players, though I think that will depend on how bad the injuries are to gaston and dejan. if they are bad injuries we will probably buy replacements.
NC cant come back and `take it off her`. its hers she owns it and if she doesn't want to sell theres nothing NC can do.
I wish we did know what has happened and what will happen, but all we can do is wait and see. this statement is good for the club in the short term, and things may change in the summer.

Cortese walked because she wanted to have more say in how the club was being run, Cortese spat his dummy out I'm afraid as he didn't want her looking into the financial side of the Club, essentially it's her money that has paid for Cortese's dream, he charged every single bit if his expenditure even personal personal including his Mrs's shopping trip to London to the Club, maybe she'd had enough.

How do we know she has no interest in football? Fair question, I suppose we don't. What we do know is that she didn't come to watch a club she owns, by way of inheritance, even though it plays in the best league in the world and has an airport nearby for the family jet. What we do know is that until now she had only met the manager of her team once in an entire year at a staff party. Given those facts I'm going to take some persuading that she real loves football and was always the architect behind the vision we have all been so enthused by.

Yes. And that side of her business empire is considerably bigger than a football club and knee deep in quality executives to manage and develop it.

You know as well as I do that football is very different than any other type of business. If in doubt ask the likes of Mike Ashley, Alan Sugar, Dave Whelan or even the Venky's.

A business as fragile as this does not make for good financial investment it's done for other more esoteric reasons. If MoPo hadn't stayed and the players no longer felt committed and left, the value of the 'business' would have tumbled along with its league position.

Haven't her advisors already acknowledged that she is a reluctant owner of a football club. I'd imagine even a billionaire would be impressed at the profit the initial investment has already made( on paper). I think this was purely that as the owner she wanted more transparency from NC and he didn't want to give it. You can see both sides of the argument really. After all everything he has touched has turned to gold and he probably couldn't understand why things needed to change. He will be extremely lucky to find another employer who is prepared to give him a free hand without reporting back what is going on. There are other precedents for this anyway. Currently Poopey have loads of owners who don't know anything about football as they regularly prove with their posts on here. Sorry I know this is a serious thread but I couldn't resist that.

Katherina says the club isn't for sale - and neither are any of our players. And she travelled from Switzerland to say that to the staff personally. She has also said she wanted and asked Nicola to stay, but he chose not to do so. I wish he had stayed.

Katherina clearly isn't one who enjoys being in the media eye - and hey, maybe football isn't her favourite pastime either.

But it seems obvious that she cherishes the memory of her dad. She certainly looks like Markus' daughter and maybe she's a chip off the old block.

Well - that's some block.

Markus saved Saints and his memory is cherished too by supporters.
So I say let's give Katherina our 100%.

Of course it's possible that the club will be sold in the future, but I believe Katherina's main priority if that ever happens will be to ensure it goes to safe hands. Markus didn't buy Saints just to make money - he didn't need it at all. And I don't think Katherina will sell it just for money - she doesn't need it either.

The Liebherr family has been unbelievably good for our club.

It was a really joy to see Markus beaming down at Wembley that day when we lifted the JPT. And who knows, maybe we'll also see Katherina beaming down at St Marys on a successful day to come.

To date we have absolutely no reason to suppose that being owned by this family is anything other than a great blessing. So let's get on with the job of supporting our great manager and our great top-half Premier League team. COYR!

What we do know is that until now she had only met the manager of her team once in an entire year at a staff party. Given those facts I'm going to take some persuading that she real loves football and was always the architect behind the vision we have all been so enthused by.
I don't suppose she's into cranes or fridges either ...... She's into business is my guess .

Buying a club for £13 million and it now being worth around "£175 million" sounds like a pretty good financial investment to me!!!

COYR!

"Nobody buys a football club to make money"

Well Marcus Liedherr did!

At a time when NO ONE ELSE wanted it, Nicola Cortese persuaded Marcus Liebherr (who had no interest in football) to buy Southampton FC as part of his Wealth Portfolio. In other words, it was bought as an investment to make a profit. And what an investment it has turned out to be!

Unless Katharina Liebherr suddenly develops an addiction to football, she will sell it at a huge profit - not to would be extremely foolish, both from a personal wealth point of view and a business point of view.

As to why Cortese left, I haven't a clue! What I do know is that Cortese is the one single reason why Southampton FC is so successful. It is also the reason that he will land another to job, inside or outside football.

As to why Cortese left, I haven't a clue! What I do know is that Cortese is the one single reason why Southampton FC is so successful. It is also the reason that he will land another to job, inside or outside football.
The reason Southampton FC is so successful is Cortese had the Liebherr's millions to spend, has anyone actually heard her say she does not like football, maybe she likes to watch it from the comfort of her own home, as many people do.

I was/am a big fan of Niola Cortese and though i did not agree with some of his methods (most noteably the sacking of Nigel Adkins) I think that without him we would probably not be back in the premiership; and i for one was sorry to see him leave. Why he left, like most, i have no idea; but now that he has, it is great news that Katharina Leibher has no plans to sell SFC. We need to be in strong hands, run by people who know how to run a buisiness, and we need more than anything else, stability. I think we have all of these and a top manager and team toboot. I had feared the wheels would come off when Cortese left but thankfully that appears not to be the case; now that KL has moved quickly to reasure staf and fans, we can look ahead to even more exciting times in the years to come. Todays news is great news....im well chufffed!

Sky SN more or less said the same thing, The Club's not being sold for now, wouldn't be pushed about the future, confirmed no one is going out, (not even Luke, there has been some mischief tonight in that respect), but not sure if there might be some signings,. Make of that what you will. John Williams is so far the only one to be interviewed for CEO and we will hear later in the week.
To be fair we really have no idea who has been interviewed or may have been offered an interview. Relying on the media is a poor excuse for communication as we have just witnessed. A wait and see approach is the best we can do, unless you nave fun speculating.

My post was written on my phone on a packed train, and battery about to run out and with predictive text jumping in. So sorry if your struggling to get the gist, but others have had no problem.

In a nutshell Katharine is just trying to keep things calm now, but not the future! People and the DE are jumping on little statements made! The thing is Katharine is saying not the immediate future and players not sold in this window!

Sorry but this not joyful news to celebrate! Katharine is in fact not telling us nothing at all! She not telling us her plans at all! She just looking after her interest for now, as that to date is it! Katharine is saying no player sold in this window, and the club is not to be sold in the immediate future! Immediate being now! But come May through the Summer is not immediate. When the season finishes then many Saints fans might be very very worried! Come summer will MP still be here, I hope so! Come summer will our players stay with Saints? Come summer will our youth players like Shaw / Chambers be ours like under NC? Who made sure our players were for Southampton FC going forward! Come summer will the club change hands and if so who too?

Facts are that under NC we had a visionary chairman and a man who wanted Saints to win the prem league! Fact is now we do not! Fact is no one really knows Katharine and she let NC go for what ever reason! Fact is Katharine has known this is on the cards and not done much in the way to let the fans of the club know her vision! Fact Katharine is only saying now, and leaving Southampton FC future out to played with!! I will go as far as Katharine has well and truly rocked the boat when this club had it all going for itself and seems to only be prepared to deal with now and reacting to things, which can be interpreted as hopeful at best but so far only shown her looking after her assets for if she looking to get rid say summer?

Hope I'm wrong but to date she could handle this all a lot better.

I for one hope NC acts on his plan B he mentioned back in Jan on Sky interview and have other wealthy backers to come in! Does MP know and that's why he has stayed?

If you want to be pedantic about it next week is not the immediate future either. Let's just be grateful she has steadied the ship and we have come out of it relatively unscathed. We won't know one way or the other what her plans are unless she decides to inform us.

Ok so she is not immediately selling the club , good news that. So she will appoint a chairman or some one to run the club day to day. She might then take her time and sell to the right person/group. With regards to Cortese leaving something obviously not right behind closed doors. He was running the club but with their money. I wonder who was calling the shots KL or NC. And what is all the talk about the boardroom staff. I personally thought it was just NC.

Well, lots of interesting comments, so let me put in my thoughts. In terms of the team and transfers, NC was a shrewd businessman who would not be taken for a mug, especially regarding agents and their fees. But behind the scenes, he was not a liked man, majority of the back room staff did not like him, his man management skills towards the staff was appalling. Fact. We do not see these things on match day, but this was probably part of the problem that katharina found out about after she wanted to know a bit more of the goings on at the club. Now that he has gone, I think there was a sense of relief. I just hope we can bring in a chief exec who will run the club in a friendly efficient way.
In terms of whether the club will be sold, not sure, like previous comments, they don't need the money, but if a sensible comes in, it may well be looked at, but what we don't need is if the offer is from someone who has had to borrow a lot of money to get it, therefore paying off the loan over a number of years, and the team suffers from a lack of investment in the transfer market.
I may well get a few comments regarding the above, but these are my thoughts and known facts.

One last point NC had a plan, and he wanted the best for Saints and he let you know about it. Unscathed for now, is all you can say. Why are Ms Liebherr's motives suddenly being questioned now?

She has already owned the club for a few years and I don't remember anybody questioning her motives or commitment before.

She hasn't been high-profile or turned up to games before, and nobody has questioned it before now.

When she bank-rolled at least 3 record signings, and spent her millions transforming the training facilities, no-one thought it appropriate to question her love of the game or her interest in football.

Now, after NC walks out on the club for whatever reason, her every move and motive is questioned.

How would any of us feel to have our motives continually questioned if we were fortunate enough to own the club and had invested many millions in making it successful?

Ms Liebherr is quite rightly not pandering to the press, even though this leaves her open to speculation and rumour. As fans of her club, I think we need to treat all the anti-Saints destabilisation stories that are rife at the moment with the contempt they deserve and get behind the club in its entirety and march on.

1. All the bills including the wages are being paid in full and on time.
2. Staplewood is on course to being upgraded to an extremely high standard.
3. We are comfortably 9th in the best league in the world with a very talented squad although it could do with a bit more strength in depth.
4. More talent is emerging from our youth system and look able to take first squad places almost immediately.
5. The person owning our club has no need to sell unless an amazing offer appears and is close to appointing an executive chairman until then she appears able and willing to do the job herself.
Our first team players are committed to our manager and his team who are getting all the support and funding they need.

I am sure you can all add to this but you will have to dig deep to convince me of negatives.....

simple answer is none of us know why NC left, and we may never know.
none of us know if KL wants to continue to own the club in the long/medium or short term, and we don't know if we will buy new players, though I think that will depend on how bad the injuries are to gaston and dejan. if they are bad injuries we will probably buy replacements.
NC cant come back and `take it off her`. its hers she owns it and if she doesn't want to sell theres nothing NC can do.
I wish we did know what has happened and what will happen, but all we can do is wait and see. this statement is good for the club in the short term, and things may change in the summer.
no one seems to think perhaps her children and husband like football!

as far as I`m aware she has been a couple of times, I think she was at a pre-season friendly, don't think it was at sms. but then how many foreign owners do watch their teams? or actually love football? has Malcolm Glazer ever been to manure? John W. Henry & Tom Werner don't go to Liverpool that often maybe once a season and don't meet rogers that often. Stan Kroenke at arsenal, Shahid Khan at Fulham and Randy Lerner at villa. how many of them love football or even watch it that often?
I will give KL a fair go she may even come more often and sees the memorial plaque on ML`s seat and realises what this club meant to ML and what ML meant to this club.

I'm glad to be part of the Liebherr empire. It's a strong company built on traditional ethics which makes tangible, useful things; things used in the docks of Southampton. I really don't want us sold off to the Chinese, as is fast happening with much of the country's assets, or become the plaything of a Middle Eastern oil barron.

This news makes the choice of the new chief executive really important, so I hope Katharina and her people get it right.

(I also think a new centre back might need to be on the shopping list PDQ.)

I don't suppose she's into cranes or fridges either ...... She's into business is my guess .

You know as well as I that she has no intention of running Saints , that's what employees are for !
Of course I know that. I also know she had a CEO who was independent, was there from the start, in fact created the start by selling the idea to Markus, had a vision and was leaving nothing to chance - 12 different training pitches to replicate each type of grass in the prem, players mattresses going to hotels in advance of their stay - I've never seen that type of attention to detail in any football club, it really was impressive stuff. Finding someone of equal or greater calibre will be a tough task.

Cortese didn't walk away from his dream for no reason did he? We can only speculate why, maybe refusal to invest further or wishing to sell the club, who knows - but we can be sure it wasn't trivial. He was on a massive salary - two years ago he was earning over 1m net so god knows what he was on now - you don't give that up for no reason.

Dear Katharina
You may have detected an awful stench on your journey to you own personal multi million pound premier league football club. Don't worry too much the wind is generally westerly so the horrible smell is forced away from the mighty Southampton. We believe it is caused by a death nearby. This is coming from a very tiny little club to the east which you won't have ever heard of. They aren't quite dead yet but the smell is from the festering wounds caused by intense jealousy. We expect rigor mortis to set in very soon.

And? Still a small club, precious few seasons in the top flight in the modern era, and the cautionary tale kids will grow up hearing about spending beyond your means and having the audacity to go through multiple administrations in a handful of years.
Still, I do respect your real fans for turning up. 15k isn't bad for division four. Not sure what we would get- having never been there, can't even imagine. But our 24k in division 3 makes me think we'd get 20k?

So why did Nicola Cortese leave? If she is not planning on selling why walk out as chairman? A lot of unanswered questions here. The reason I thought he walked was because she wanted to sell and he told her to wait? Why own a club if you have no interest in football, I would prefer someone who cared for the game and wanted to develop the club further! She is in it for the money and a profit not to invest in any more players. I see Nicola Cortese coming back with backers and taking it off her - Well I hope so anyway COYR!
The reasons for his departure will probably not be revealed as both NC and KL are very private and professional. She will appoint a new CEO that will run the club and work with MP. The future on Southampton FC does not depend on one person. If it did, MP would be much harder to replace than NC. Life goes on at ST. Mary's, don't be so negative.

Blue your gates are what they are because of the 'feel good' factor of the Truss take over back in the summer and a large number of season tickets being sold. You said you were favourites for promotion - remember that? The reality is you're just off relegation from the football league. Do you think your gates will hold up next year? If you do - fancy a bet?

So are you saying she was lying when she said that he had done a fantastic job and didn't want him to walk away?
Of course she is going to say that, she is hardly going to say the opposite on TV or to the local press is she!

So are you saying she was lying when she said that he had done a fantastic job and didn't want him to walk away?
Of course she is going to say that, she is hardly going to say the opposite on TV or to the local press is she!
Right. So you re saying that NC was sacked and didn't walk away as well presumably.

Perhaps ms liebherr asked Cortesse him to resign because of drop from third to ninth and 1 win in how many now ?

He's right of course she would say that. Everything done and said so far is highly predictable. Whether it's all true or protecting the asset is what we don't know. I suppose only time and events will tell. Firstly the appointment of a CEO then performance between now and the seasons end. Then the summer - managers and players staying and being added to or a slow disintegration of all that has been achieved. I do hope this wonderful journey hasn't reached its end. I suppose it boils down to how instrumental Cortese was to it all.

They aren't now. But they were when they won the European Cup. And they are much bigger than Poopey ever were. Such a shame that history counts for nothing compared to being in the best league in the world. Only idiots would think otherwise. Oh just a minute..............

............. nope I was right first time.
History is just that, history and we live in the present. And in the present we are in the Premier League and they are not!
Getting 15000+ is the proof of the pudding will the honeymoon period end and we only get 8000 again as you stated I think not because people have pledged £1000 so their keen which will end in April 2014 so they will go and 10000 have purchased season tickets and other have joined syndicates and the casual supporter its only £20 adults , students £10 children £5,I don't think your against fan ownership only us !.

Wellll.... she's been to how many games? She was happy enough to give NC free rein when we were still a middling club. How do you know about being elevated by the Northam? Oo arr ya?

Blue you and we all know that 15000 are not lookiNC their investment, maybe a tenth of that. If you survive this season you will get half of that next year. However when you go down you wont even get that.

Perhaps Mr Cortese is looking for another South Coast team to save from total destruction, but of course you said you wouldn't allow that to happen, so no chance for you then?
