Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese is reported to be on verge of leaving club with A C Milan linked to move

Basingstoke Gazette: Nicola Cortese Nicola Cortese

SAINTS chairman Nicola Cortese is ready to quit the club, it has been reported today.

Unconfirmed reports say that the 45-year-old is to leave Southampton after almost five years at the helm at St Mary’s.

It has also been reported that if Cortese does leave it could also signal the departure of manager Mauricio Pochettino from the Premier League club.

The news comes as Italian giants AC Milan have again been linked with a move for the 45-year-old, who has helped mastermind the club’s rise from the verge of going out of business to ninth in the Premier League.

The Serie A club first enquired back in January 2010 about whether Cortese would be keen to join them.

That was just a few months into Cortese’s first season at St Mary’s, after being brought in by owner Marcus Liebherr following the latter’s takeover in July 2009.

Prior to Milan’s interest four years ago, Cortese had already claimed he had excellent contacts in the Italian game, including AC Milan.

It was these contacts that helped Saints sign Papa Waigo on loan in 2009 from Fiorentina.

Saints have since signed Guly, Gaston Ramirez and Dani Osvaldo from Serie A clubs, while Artur Boruc’s last club was Fiorentina prior to joining Saints as a free agent in October 2012.

AC Milan, who are reported to be on the verge of appointing former midfield Clarence Seedorf as new manager after sacking Massimiliano Allegri, following last Sunday’s embarrassing 4-3 loss at Sassuolo.

That defeat left AC a massive 30 points behind leaders Juventus.

Cortese’s star has risen in Italy for his work in helping Saints rise from the third division to the top ten of the Premier League inside three years.

Last May, Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino said he would leave St Mary’s if Cortese departed.

"I would not understand staying in this role if Nicola was not here,” Pochettino said at the time.

"The person that actually called me from the start, told me about the project and put their faith in me was Nicola.

"I have great respect as well for Southampton, the club and the supporters, but Nicola has been the one that has placed his trust and faith in me.

"I wouldn't see myself in this club if it was not for him. I think I am a very transparent person, a very honest person."

Cortese is familiar with AC Milan, and has previously spoken to the Italian media about their training facilities being an inspiration to what he is trying to build at Staplewood.

Last summer he told Corriere della Serra: “I visited Milanello ten years ago, which then became something of a reference point.

"It had great charm, it felt like joining a family. The model for our (Saints') training facilities is Milanello.”

AC Milan’s current chief executive, Adriano Galliani, has been in his role at the San Siro since 1986.

The 69-year-old said last November that he was planning to quit, but he is still in his role.

Barbara Berlusconi, daughter of club president Silvio Berlusconi, had previously said AC Milan needed a new philosophy - but denied calling for a change of chief executive.

It wouldnt be just rumours with the amount of press reporting the same thing. Its a deliberate leak. Cortese has 3 particular journalist friends (Neil Ashton -Daily Mail, Jim White and Ben Smith - BBC). All 3 were amongst the first to report it. Would say games being played at this stage as they wouldnt leak something if it were 100% going to happen .

It is my birthday and I am in Gstaad exactly were I was when many friends from Southampton phoned me about NA going last year.

If I hear this today I swear someobody will feel my wrath….NA was highly emotional and we cared for a decent human being, not many of those in life and of coures to back to back promotions…

...this is of a different magnitude because unbelievable ability and almost exclusively on this one mans decision making success fills me with 'Fear' if he goes….

Whilst we were never going to compete with AC Milan I cannot help but feel that sell outs and over demand every week at St Mary's may have stayed his hand as the club support would have justified stadium expansion and one more push..

Removing the emotion as Don will have and 28.000 would have worried me as to whether my ideas were too big for the club.

I'll take new owners, but I'd like Cortese to remain whoever is in charge of the bank account. If the Liebherr's are not interested anymore, they should sell. We can trust Cortese to find a responsible new owner willing to make the investments the club needs to push on and realize the potential we all know is there and fulfill the plans he and his team have been working so long on. Where the money comes from doesn't matter (so long as it's legal). Heck, I'll even take a playboy Arab sheikh willing to finance the purchase of Messi and the re-signing of Gareth Bale. I like our "youth first" policy, but between Man City-esque extravagance or a sudden Pompey-esque crash and burn, I'll take the former.

Initial response was DE making mountains out of molehills but there does seem to be some genuine smoke floating around which means a fire somewhere.

It may just be Cortese simply flexing his muscles in order to get Katherina Leibherr to once again back his vision. On the other hand he may genuinely feel he's gone as far as he can and is getting out (almost certainly taking Potchetinno with him). At this stage we just don't know.

If its the first and he succeeds, all well and good, although it would be worrying that Katherina's support is so poor that Cortese needs to resort to such measures - almost certainly he couldn't repeat this approach again. If it doesn't, or if he's genuinely on the way out, then all is in the melting pot.

It doesn't appear Katherina and Cortese are buddies, so it could just involve getting a new chairman and manager - however getting 2 men with the same ideals and committment wouldn't be easy. The Leibherr's may not particularly care about that anyway.

The upside is that Saint's are now firmly on the world football map, and even if Katherina decides to take the profit and run they'll be plenty of buyers willing to pump money into potentially the most attractive proposistion in the PL. The downside however is obvious - another period of change, uncertainty, and perhaps the loss of some of our biggest stars in the short term.

Whatever happens, the biggest disappointment in all this is the turmoil and change that we were beginning to hope was in the past. Most saints fans have had enough of that over the past 4 years and its a shame we might be facing more of the same. Just hope its a storm in a tea cup and will blow over, but can't help feeling it may be more than that this time.

If you check out the ownership of the Club in the OS it still says that ownership of the shareholding is still in probate, it could be that the legal niceties are coming to a conclusion and that NC has been caretaking until the Club can be marketed for a new consortium to take over, however a new consortium would probably want to bring in their own people to run and manage the Club? Just a thought. How solvent everything is may be a different problem. We will just have to be patient and wait for some kind of clarification, you can speculate all you like and plenty of WUM material here so fill your boots until the truth comes to the fore. Meanwhile the team is going to need a bit of real support, this speculation can be very morale wrecking.

This would be the best option and is what I hope NC is trying to organise. If the Leibherrs sell SFC they would make a profit. If I was KL, I would incentivise NC to do the deal....no one better.

Does that not then give NC an opportunity to;
Bring in big money with which to complete “the project”.
Renegotiate his own deal.
End the relationship with KL if there is a problem there.
Most importantly allow SFC to retain his services and at this stage MP's and then allow us to move on to the next level with the right backing.

This would appear to be a win, win, win option. KL gets a profit, NC can get whatever he needs with new backing to finish the job and we, SFC, could challenge top four?

Alternatively if NC does leave, I cannot believe that he will drop us in the sh??. He will have a plan B.

In NC we trust......

Most of you haven't been following the details of the business relationship between Cortese and Katharina Liebherr. You won't already know, for example, that Cortese stood down from the board of the MALI Holdings company in October 2013:

bringing that part of his career association with Katharina Liebherr to an end.

The other companies in the MALI group, such as MALI MOTAN and MALI Common Rail Technologies, have all been liquidated, as of July 2013.

These companies owned lucrative patents concerning engine technology, intellectual property which derived from the inventions of Markus Liebherr. But Katharina Liebherr's business interests seem to lie elsewhere. Did I ever mention on here that she has no recorded interest whatever in football?

We have recovered from far worse, so if he goes it will still be SFC that is the main thing.

We always knew this was going to happen it was just a matter of when than if.

By all accounts Katharina Liebherr has no interest in football but doesn't want to sell. It must drive NC mad with frustration because Saints are so close to being in the Champions League. If NC and MP go Saints would lose the drive and energy of this young partnership but no one person is bigger than Southampton Football Club. Saints future is in the hands of Katharina Liebherr and we are just going to have to trust her, who knows maybe she wants to be chairperson herself or maybe Redbull will buy us.

I now think that this is more than just a rumour and is a deliberate leak.

Has KL pulled out of a deal to sell the club, a deal brokered by Cortese? I heard a story about such a deal where Cortese would remain at SFC as a co-owner.

Obviously something has broken down and it's looks like he could be on his way.
Perhaps NC wanted to follow the fans requests for some new players in the January window, has been told to go away, with a flea in his ear, so has decided that he isn't able to fulfil the dream, so it's time to quit now before things go down hill through lack of financial support. Or maybe AC Milan have made him an offer he couldn't refuse? A statement one way or the other would help, but even then I guess there will be much reading between the lines and we could be in for some wonderful variations on the theme. In the long run new owners will be in, new managers will come and go, we will go up and down in our usual manner, through thick and thin the loyal supporters will still be there at the end. The Club which nearly died, will hopefully survive and move on. I hate January, I hate 2014 so far, it can as they say, only get better.

This would be the best option and is what I hope NC is trying to organise. If the Leibherrs sell SFC they would make a profit. If I was KL, I would incentivise NC to do the deal....no one better.

Does that not then give NC an opportunity to;
Bring in big money with which to complete “the project”.

Superb post mate, well done. Katharina must realise that Cortese has made her millions and millions. If she wants to turn the profit to cash, just sell! But let Cortese do the dealing, as Markus Liebherr would have wanted.

Happy that you can bring a bit of humour into the situation, you seem to be pretty sharp on the Financial side, what can you explain about the "Ownership in probate statement on the OS", how can the Club be sold if it is still tied up in red tape?

Apparently Sky Sports "understands" that he has handed in his resignation. All reports are using similar descriptions. This does NOT mean that he has. He wouldn't have leaked this to the media, it's not his style. Links to Italian clubs that have been mentioned were first raised four years ago. Keep calm everyone until we hear news on the official web site.
