Perez hails Lallana impact

Basingstoke Gazette: Jesus Perez Jesus Perez

Jesus Perez felt Adam Lallana deserved his goal against Burnley at the end of a difficult week.

Lallana has been in the headlines as a result of the complaint made by Saints against referee Mark Clattenburg for comments made to the Saints midfielder in the defeat at Everton.

It has led to Lallana being put in the spotlight, even though it was the club rather than the player that filed an official complaint.

Lallana was called upon as a second half sub in the FA Cup tie against Burnley and scored a great goal as Saints made it through to the fourth round with a 4-3 victory.

Perez, assistant manager to Mauricio Pochettino, said: “I think everyone can see Adam Lallana this season and every single minute he is on the pitch he tries to do his best and is always doing great, great things.

“He deserved it because of the example for the squad, daily on the training ground, and it’s no surprise for me when Adam Lallana on the pitch is doing things and goals like he did.”

Perez confirmed that injuries to Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez were not serious and added: “It was a strange game but you know in the cup game everything is possible because the teams are playing without pressure.

“Sometimes one of the sides is clinical and the other not so much and I think that was the case.

“At the end of the day the most important thing is stay in the next round, especially when you play a cup game at the end of a tough period like Christmas was for us and I’m just happy for that.”

Just got home and enjoyed the game, Burnley were a worthy opponent and could easily have embarassed us, we scored 4 goals all from distance, something, we just hadn't been trying often enough, with a bit more composure we could have had a lot more. At the back I am afraid that it looks as if Hoover has had his day, Maya made a few gaffs too, but he did turn an ankle in the 2nd half and played on gamely. Rickie took a kick just after he scored and just before he skied that other effort, hopefully only bruising and nothing more sinister. The idea of playing keep ball is just that, not to carelessly give it away in dangerous areas. Lalla was just a class apart when he came on, he was that before he played for England.

Wouldn't it just be great if Clutterbrain made another huge gaff in the Spuds /Ars game and it costs Wenger the match. Be interesting to hear his take on things then. Well done to Adam today for shrugging off all the controversy and playing well. A win is a win but we seriously need to stop shipping goals as we won't win next weekend if we concede three.

Harsh on some of the players, Seed, but not far wrong.

Also, time will tell if some of the new crop of youngsters will make it. Had we brought players like Buttner, Shaw would have taken longer to establish himself, so I hope we don't bring so many new players in that the likes of Reed, Rowe and Gallagher don't get a chance.

All said, we're a work in progress. We keep adding better players, so the squad IS improving, thus, we are progressing in the right direction.

No complaints from me.

We are doing well, incredibly well with our development squad and I'm sure several of them will be added to that list in the future. Our transfer activity has been mediocre at best with two £12m players failing to make an impact, Lovren and Wanyama superb and Forren being offloaded without kicking a ball. That side of our business must improve.

Although a while ago it looked entirely unnecessary, maybe the events of recent weeks will result in Nicola/MoPo looking for some better back-up players in the window. We've gone from having the tightest defence in the league to one of the leakiest and it's clear we are very fortunate that our injury list hasn't been longer. (Amazingly, two places higher in the Prem brings in the same cash as an FA Cup Final win).

A top half position would be absolutely fine by me and would represent excellent incremental, manageable and sustainable progress. I think our resources are far too thin to entertain the gruelling Thursday night cup without serious damage to our Prem performances - and that cup competition, which needs major reform, brings in very little money anyway whilst gobbling up masses of energy and resources.

In any case, I'll be relieved, able to enjoy things much more and better able to dream of bigger things when we hit 40 points and safety! And once we're safe I'll be much more relaxed about experimenting with and giving that needed experience to more of the academy lads.

still harsh on Danni though. needs time in the team to judge him properly. he didn't have a pre-season with the team and has had injuries and now a needles suspension. it says a lot when you don't think an Italian centre forward is good enough to be competing in the top six.
a lot of players don't settle in their first year and given time, and support, I think Danni has what it takes to take us up a level.
as you said seed top strikers cost £30+mill and we haven't even spent half of that.
I also think J-rod could become a 20 goal a season striker.

We'll never really know what the Forren thing was all about but maybe Lovren wouldn't be here if Forren had worked out. I bet Forren will end up at Cardiff.

Others above have mentioned a few that you could (and I WOULD) add to the squad you list but you are basically right that if we are aiming for the top 6 - or the top 4 for that matter - we will need to attract some top, top players whilst holding on to the best we have and NOT breaking the bank skunt style.

Tricky, but who (other than some on here who think we can just go out and buy whoever we want) ever said that building the best squad in world football was easy.

As I said before the season started 13th is an improvement but I hope for a top ten finish, I haven't waivered from that. The talk of top 4/6 wasn't by me and all I'm saying is at the moment I think those are the ones for that aspiration. Danni and Jay Rod may continue to improve and make the grade, particularly Jay. Rickie is a consummate footballer, truly superb, his lack of pace will always limit his goal scoring at this level.

It's worth remembering that under the original five-year plan we weren't even supposed to reach the Premier League for another eight months. Yes, we may not be the finished top-flight article but things aren't going too badly. Every season we improve it increases our chances of landing higher-calibre international players and also gives some incredible young talent time to mature.

It's a path I believe in. Just look at the way Man City have gone about their business: all that money spent and they've won, what, one paltry league title more than us. Fcuk that - sustainable growth is what it's all about.

What did the `pink` ball look like in person? I must say I am very, very unimpressed with how it looks on the tv, even in HD.
why do they have to change from the good old fashioned white ball, I don't even like the yellow ball the prem use in the winter months. has this been done just because of money?

d 2 at least who can score at least 20 between them.
20 between them....right so Rodrigues and lambert have 14 between them and we are only 20 games into the season...?? So on their current form they will achieve something like 26/27 between them...

Good to see people know what's going on at their football club...I find it genuinely insulting that people could undermine Rodrigues after the huge impact he is having this season! And even more insulting that you don't value SRL as an absolute idol and key creative player (at the least) after everything the man has done for this club (and is continuing to do)...

If all you want is to see £40m spent on two world class strikers then you have just as much loyalty as the strikers you would be buying...I recommend supporting man city!

Highlights were awful, like you said it makes you appreciate MOTD. Thats ITV for you though, more time for ad breaks than games. Did like WGS on the program though, he gave us a lot of praise for the season not just yesterdays game.
ITV's coverage of the arsenil - spuds game was bad as well. Not only did they have Roy Keane on, who at the best of times is an AR$e, but they also had
ledley king who looked, and sounded, like a deer in the headlights of a truck.
I don't have BT sports, and refuse to pay an extra £12 a month + £15 connection fee for the privilege of watching a few games, they've only had saints on once this season so far! So I don't know what their coverage is like. £15 connection fee to watch on sky! Thanks Europe

In my opinion BT Coverage is better than ITV, I only have it because I went back to BT Broadband after getting fed up with my previous provider, seeing the games was a bonus that I hadn't been aware of until I had signed up! As for paying the extra, that's down to personal choice, as you say they have only featured us once and that is disappointing but not surprising so it won't encourage our locals to subscribe, perhaps they need to rethink their strategy a bit more. When ITV decided to feature Arsenal v Spuds I presume they think it has a chance of a better audience, well I would prefer to watch a potential giant killing game, Arsenal and Spuds games you can watch every week.

ITV !
What a carp highlights programme last night!
Really makes me appreciate MotD.
How could they manage to get all the highlights into 3 minutes?
They didn't !
The news programmes on Monday night give more info and highlights than they did last night.
Coupled with the fact that there was no online at all it doesn't look good for the future with BT in control of broadcasting.
It looks like we are all going to have to buy tickets to see the rest of our cup run! ! !
When ITV decided to feature Arsenal v Spuds I presume they think it has a chance of a better audience, well I would prefer to watch a potential giant killing game, Arsenal and Spuds games you can watch every week.
good point ospers. as a sky subscriber I can spuds v arsenil nearly every time they play. they would have been better putting the villa game on. they have got hoof on today in the hope that it will be a `giant` killing by forest, then have the pundits talking about how the pressure is on fat face sam and how that's wrong. fat face sam has just said " im in a no win position unless these players go out and win for me"?
my point about BT having the FA cup and prem games is that its down to Europe and its decision that sky were not allowed to have every game because Its a monopoly and `unfair` to fans. so its `fair` that fans have to pay more to get the same games? as you say its personal choice and even though I could afford it I choose not to. personally I think Europe should have said that 10 percent of tv games should be reserved for free to air tv, i.e. bbc or itv. that would have been `fair` to the fans. also kids who`s parents don't like football, and so might not pay for sports channels, would be able to watch live games on tv and might then get into the game.

Dunno about that, but if he wants to win the FA Cup, the Hoofers are a goal down at Forest.

why do they have to change from the good old fashioned white ball, I don't even like the yellow ball the prem use in the winter months. has this been done just because of money?
I didn't go, but just going by the fact, we scored 3 from outside of the box, can we use it every game?

Another question, for those that were there. With Perez in charge, was Pochettino there?

If our early season form is ever to become permanent and do not forget we were not exactly free scoring…we need four players who could play in any of the existing top four sides…100 million anyone.

Remeber this would be replacing those who canot cut it, of itself it still would not cover injuries etc another 40 million…this is why even Spurs and Everton with much higher revenues found it took years to get a one off Champions league place…

The blame is not us, our club or even our players for the predicament of anyone outside the top four is simple, greed, the G16 which even Chelsea had to kick the blöödy doors in to enter is a self serving bunch of corporates determined at all costs to keep the Champions league 'riches' to themselves and no-one else may enter…

It may be 'good' for tv and armchair 'fans' but it is horrible for every true supporter….still they only took a leaf out of Sepp Blatters book…

Even the USA understands the need for everyone to have a fair shot not just Iraqi's and Al Queda..hence forgive the pun the draft…

..for a little while our Saints were a breathe of fresh air to our same old same old same old league..regrettably normal service has resumed.

I was guilty in november of getting carried away with our position in the Prem. i even posted on here saying the gulf between us and the top dogs was not that big. A few weeks later i stand very much corrected. I think part of the reason I was carried away is that I'm so fed up with the same old, same old in the top 4/5 spots in the Prem. Dare I even say its actually repetitive and even boring. It was so refreshing to see an up and coming young team like ours taking up one of the top spots. i would really love to see us up there with the likes of Everton and Newcastle pushing the big guns out of the way. Unfortunately, It all comes down to money to be able to compete at the top consistently. Very sad but, very true.

Put yourself in Lambo's shoes, your playing for a top 10 premier club that are making waves at the very top level of english football. Playing attractive honest football, producing some of the finest english youth talent in the country and fast becoming the main supply chain for the international side.
Lambert although getting on in football terms has still learn't alot over the last few years at Saints and has totally changed as a footballer, going to West Ham would mark the end of his career! I do still feel there is a place for him in the side, moreso in my opinion then Osvaldo and for the record I also feel that JRod is good enough to stay and keep his place, the only place I can see that the club might spend more money in the window is at CB to complete a top level defensive four, but its clear what their intentions are, they want to build a team around the youth, in terms of the youth that have played this season it has been a major success, with that said and not reflecting on the recent results I am still very pleased with the team as a whole, with main players coming back into the fold and a strong finish to the season its going to be a very successful premiership campaign for the club...onwards and upwards!

LOL - An exhibition match with Forest scoring at will against Wet Spam. Could not happen to a nicer team.

Why would RICKIE want to join a club like that.

5-0 ... Wet Spam are a joke.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON. COYR

It's rumoured they are offering £65k a week. I suppose if he got a 3 year contract it would set him up for life. He hasn't exactly spent his whole career earning a fortune. And Wet Spam fans would be happy too. If they'd had Ricky today they would probably only have lost 5-3.

but SRL has always said that he would like to end his career with us. why would he want to join a team that could get relegated this season and when/if their £15mill donkey gets fit SRL could end up on the bench anyway. its a world cup year and its SRL`s last chance to go, he`s been picked whilst at saints and you wold think he has a better chance of being picked again if he stays and does well. as le god said yesterday `its not all about money`, but im sure SRL is on enough money here to last a while and I would like to see him stay after he finishes playing, either as a coach or in an ambassadorial role.

Not with Saints, the game, the result, anything like that
It's even worse up here in Scotland if you've only got Freeview - you can't get ITV, just the Scottish equivalent, on which they decide not to show FA Cup games let alone the highlights. Had to watch them on ITV Player - I've had "in association with William Hill" bouncing around my cranium all day.

And as for BT/Sky controlling the broadcasting, this normally wouldn't have presented a problem as I could wander down the pub, but now I'm a family man my priorities have been changed for me so at weekends I'm usually sat behind the laptop screen instead. I'll be trying to get a pass for the Sunderland game, but after I lost my bike and got stranded in Glasgow after the Spurs game, it's going to be tough.
