Saints consider appealing Clattenburg decision

Basingstoke Gazette: MARK CLATTENBURG MARK CLATTENBURG

Saints have refused to accept the refereeing chiefs' decision to rule out action against Mark Clattenburg after he was accused of verbally abusing midfielder Adam Lallana.

Southampton are considering an appeal to the FA over the ruling by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) that Clattenburg has no case to answer for his conduct in the December 29 Premier League 2-1 defeat to Everton.

Southampton wrote to the referees' governing body on New Year's Eve, to formalise their complaint against Clattenburg. But after a review the PGMOL have ruled there is no case to answer.

In a letter seen by the Press Association, Southampton claimed Clattenburg told Lallana: "You are very different now, since you've played for England - you never used to be like this." Now Southampton have pledged not to let the matter lie.

A club spokesman said: "An official insulting any player, no matter his intentions, is clearly not acceptable behaviour. For this reason we do not accept the verdict of the PGMOL in relation to this case, and do not consider the matter to be over.

"Under the circumstances we do not feel it appropriate for Mr Clattenburg to officiate in any of our matches until this matter is properly resolved."

For all of you moaning about the complaint this is the entire point of it. Brilliant absolutely brilliant.

I see the fish fiddlers have tried to cheat by having a waterlogged pitch which obviously favours the team with fins. At least the officials have got this one right and called it off.

Refs should be silent/invisible. Then you know he's done a good job if, as no room to complain if they get the decisions right.
His comments aren't offensive, but deeply unprofessional.

Saints should have had a Blatant Penalty, so if he was a Proper Referee he would have gave it, so, no appeals, means no arguments, on the other hand, the Referee for the Liverpool Game was spot on with his decision against Oscar but should have sent the "Cheat" Off, "beggars belief" if there is not Match F"xing by Referees... "Sky Bet" here we come............

Well... Well... Well..... check this comment out on an Everton site...

The Premier League have announced that Mark Clattenburg will referee an Everton home game for the first time in 6 years when he takes charge of the match against Southampton on 29th December.
The Tyne-and-Wear official caused outrage at Goodison Park for a trio of controversial decisions in the Merseyside derby of October 2007, a game that Liverpool won 2-1 and which would go down in Everton folklore as "The Clattenburg derby".

In the most notorious of the incidents, Clattenburg appeared to change his mind from awarding Tony Hibbert a yellow card for a "foul" on Steven Gerrard to a straight red card after the Reds' captain had a sly word in the referee's ear.

Dirk Kuyt equalised with the resulting penalty, even though Hibbert's challenge was outside the area, and he would go on to score the winner from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Phil Neville's deliberately handled on the line.

It was argued that the Dutchman should not have been on the pitch by that point, however, following an outrageous, waist-high two-footed lunge on Neville earlier in the second half that didn't even merit a yellow card in the referee's eyes.

The final insult for Evertonians was Clattenburg's refusal to award a penalty at the other end in injury time when Jamie Carragher visibly hauled Joleon Lescott to the ground as the pair challenged for a corner.

Then manager David Moyes's fury ensured that Clattenburg would not officiate an Everton match until 2012 and has not returned to Goodison until now.

I think the club are using this as a means of preventing this incompetent idiot from ruining any more of our games. Looking at the replay it seems that Adam was appealing for what was a clear penalty to all but the most biassed fans. All he appeared to be doing was demonstrating to him that the arm was raised and inside the box. Self important Clutter brain wasn't having any of it and had to have the last word. Once again the powers that be have let down the fans and the great game they are supposed to oversee. Personally I hope Saints push this till this fool gets removed from the list.

The difference being of course that a ref can book a player for abusive behaviour ,but a player has no comeback against a totally incompetent official.

Another thing that will come from this, is that all referees that take one of our games, now know that if they get anything wrong, they will be well and truly under the microscope.
There's nothing new in what we are trying to do. Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho and all the other big club managers, have been intimidating refs through their sheer presence. MP doesn't have the stature to upset the refs, and coerce them into making "errors" in our favour, so maybe the club have decided to take one, for those teams that regularly get shat on.

I see the fish fiddlers have tried to cheat by having a waterlogged pitch which obviously favours the team with fins. At least the officials have got this one right and called it off.
It isn't the comment in isolation that upset Poch/Cortese. The guy turned down two blatant pens. The comment and turning down the pens are evidence of an attitude during the game that Clattenburg wasn't going to upset Everton after a 6 year absence after Everton complained about the way he reffed that Liverpool derby all those years ago. I'll bet Saints real beef with Clatt is that they think his attitude generally was wholly unprofessional. Basically, Refs have always seen Saints and clubs like us as a soft touch. This is Saints saying things have changed and we ain't gonna take it laying down anymore. If so, I'm delighted with the club's actions. In my opinion refs have got away with it far too long.

Unless Mr Clattenburg said something other than what has been reported so far, I suggest SFC and Lallana drop this ASAP. The media are having a field day with this at the moment. Compared to what refs have to take from players this is nothing. It's not even abusive is it?
All this over a dubious penalty claim.........the rule has never changed, it has to be 'hand to ball'.
Move on please.

Let the media have a field day. I doubt Nicola will give a monkey's. The press are always looking to have a go at us because they don't lke the way Nicola doesn't cow tow to them. The refs dont have to take anything from the players. Anything beyond he line and they have a little thing called a yellow card. The players don't. Fact is it wasn't a dubious penalty , it was nailed on. Arm raised and inside the box. That's why the entire Saints side in the field of vision appealed at the same time.

I don't think Saints' beef is just with Clusterfcuk's attitude and unprofessional manner. I think it is because they think he is a cheat, but cannot say so without being sued.
Agree with you that refs think us a soft touch, which also explains why, in the past, we have so often been saddled with refs, making their debuts at this level. The chiefs clearly think they will have a cosy day out, but then that is also because they think the Saints fans are ****, and won't send a poor ref home to have nightmares.

I think people are missing the point here. What was said may not be the worst thing ever and in the eyes of some may appear pathetic.

But it's actually a genius move from Saints. Clattenburg obviously doesn't like us, who here actually contests that? So to stop him from refereeing our games, the club go after him on something that may be a technicality in some ways. As long as it stops him refereeing our games I don't give a f**k about what was said to Lallana (is Adam really pi*sed off about that being said? Doubt it very much).

So moaners F off, Saints fans let's all get together behind our team and get the win today and let Cortese and co. play the game of football politics
(which, as usual, he'll win).

It's not just the penalty shouts, how was the Everton player not sent off for that horror tackle?
Respect the ref....? this cheating ref? No way!
He never gave the penalties or sending off as he was scared of the 2007 incident!

Lallana and how you have the most handsome players so being picked on by refs.
Couldn't make it up.
Who are you?
Probably an ugly skunt jealous at all our handsome players. Just another thing to add to the already huge jealousy list they have.
PS. Even if we do become a laughing stock we can never become THE laughing stock of football. That position is already filled
What happened at fratton this week to get called off?
Log stuck in the "U" bend, and the skates are no longer "flushed"
