"The transfer window opens today so speculation will no dout surround us, but our ambitions for the future remain clear whilst our targets for this season are unchanged.

Happy New Year to Saints fans everywhere.

Probably the best starting 11 we've been able to field in a while. It'll be interesting to see how the forward trio work with Jay up front.

I reckon Chelsea will regard a draw as a decent result but we should go for this. New Year's Day can be a leveller and we have every chance of catching Chelsea on an off day.

try firstrowsports.bz but watch what you click on! Wait for the ad to close, click on the small x's to close any open windows, enlarge to full screen and hey presto! Not always great quality but it usually works. despite what it says you don't need to download anything to watch and if it does start to download then shut the site down immediately otherwise it will install its own browser which is a pain to get rid of.

Davis' confidence to come out has been crucial so far. Have to say Gazza would have hesitated and we'd be 1 or 2 down by now.

Putting a few nice moves together. Just wonder if it might be worth testing the goalkeeper from range a bit more instead of always trying to walk it in.

I have to say, when I saw their bench, my initial thought was that IF we really aspire to be top 4, that's the level we will need. I feel our best players (Adam, Dejan, Morgan ....) even if they haven't played every minute of all the matches over Christmas, look a bit jaded today.

Give them a decent rest and we can start to put a decent run together once the Prem matches start again.

I think Gaston has done OK today, particularly in the first half. He needs to see more more of the ball to do his stuff but its obviously difficult against a side like Chelsea - I think they are better at pressing the ball than we are.

need to grind out draws against opposition of this quality.

I'm a little upset tbh - we really took the game to them in the second half, just didn't make the most of our chances (again)

Ramirez needs to be taught to stop running 5 yards, cutting left and then shooting from wherever he is on the pitch.
If we want to compete at the higher end of the table we just can't afford to give away 6 points in a season to ANY team.

The big teams have the advantage of squad rotation which we do not. Our high pressing game will take is toll over a run of 4 games in quick succession. As such Chelsea had the advantage and then add a large slice of luck they end up winners looking really good - which they are not.

Three things were apparent for Saints - Ramirez is lightweight, Rodriguez is not a lone striker and we need a central defender to provide Lovren with some help.

Wouldn't mind Mata in our squad.

I agree, Epsom. If Gaston deserves criticism (and I don't think he does), so do others who were less effective.

Did Adam or Rickie contribute much? Were the performances by Morgan or Dejan up to their high standards? No. But this was Chelsea, who made their chances count and got that little bit of luck that we didn't.

When you can take a polayer like Mata off (again!) and bring on players like Willian and Oscar, life's going to be easier.

Take it on the chin, guys, and move on without feeling the need to blame any of our players.

Disappointing if not entirely unexpected. What must be of concern is that once again Saints enjoyed a higher % of possession, almost matched Chelsea in terms of number of shots and whilst they scored 3 Saints failed to find the net. This statistics are very similar to those against Aston Villa and Everton. One can be optimistic and say the tide of good fortune is running against and as we all know the tide will always turn or, and far more worrying. is there something fundamental missing like a "killer"instinct in front of goal. Unfortunately I think it is the latter.

In order for confidence to be restored the next two games have become "must win". It has been a very difficult period but the forthcoming fixtures are much easier but a good start against WBA & Sunderland is vital to let teams Saints are back.

When you consider the gulf in player values, keeping them out for as long as we did, was about as good as it got.
Any defence, seeing off the likes of Mata and Schurrle, have to be proud of themselves, but then coming up against Oscar and Willian, must be like trying to stop the tide from coming in.
No disgrace to be outplayed by a club that has spent an absolute fortune on players, over many years.
Just hope the team watch the game back and focus on the way the Chelsea midfield players broke with pace and timing, to get on the end of through balls.
That was a master class in how it should be done. I'm pleased we only lost by 3, TBH.

The point is, Norgie, you've chose (again) to single a player out. Can you honestly say that the other Saints players were, to a man, better than Gaston? No one is saying Gaston was superb, just that he was no worse than others.

BUT, you need some perspective here. This was Chelsea, who can bring on world class players to change a game and this was our 4th game in a short space of time. No need to look too far to explain the defeat. We didn't play particulraly well and we looked tired, Chelsea got a little luck and they made their opportunities count. No shame in any of that; now let's move on.

I guess you're just upset that you aren't able to post, 'Nigella Lawson, your nose - sorry, your boys - took a hell of a beating. :)

2014 is already worse than last year! We were with them for an hour, a little bit of bad luck, a masterclass of management and we were out played for the last 15 minutes, DC. We seem to be bunched and unable to play our good stuff in the second half, definitely need a goal poacher, 54 % possession and only 2 shots on target out of 14 attempts, not good enough, I am one unhappy clapper tonight, let's not mess about on Saturday, beat Burnley and get back on track.

Whoever says Gastón had a good game must have had a poor reception on the telly, I would say his passing is poor, his dead ball delivery is always overhit and he just can't tackle, I would have had Puncheon back instead, English and a better player
Game changed when (for some complete unknown reason) our midfield was taken apart... by removing Cork and Davis!

Always rely on Poopey to cheer you up :-)
The point is, Norgie, you've chose (again) to single a player out.

Happy New Year!
Yes, I agree somewhat but although Adam, Shaw, J-Rod and Spider were not at their best, I still feel Gastón isn't good enough even at his best. Removing Cork and Davis was, IMO, a mistake by MoPo.
Chelzki are a good team but once we went behind we took off our best players and left our worst on.
But, I am happy we are 9th in the toughest league in the World!

As a team against the very best we do not really look dangerous in front of goal or in control at the back. Within the team there are individuals who mainain a standard of performance but they are let down by those who do not.

What do us Saints fans expect? Really? We've done amazingly , and will be a top ten side. But when you play against a team that can bring on 60 million quid plus of talent as subs, you have to face the facts that we will probably lose. No shame there at all.
What we do need to consider is that we need to create more clear chances, or be more prepared to shoot than we have been. We look like a lovely side, but last third is underwhelming.
That said, you'd think from some of the comments on here that we were Poopey, or some other lower league side. We are where we want to be- in the proper league, playing the big boys. The down side is that unlike league one or the championship, we aren't going to win 80% of our games.
But what do you prefer? Winning weekly against Burnley. Blackpool, or Wycombe etc. or being there in the world renowned, top level premiership, but maybe losing to Chesea or Citeh? I'd take premiership status all day long. The lower leagues are rubbish hoof fests. Glory is being at the top table
