Saints again linked with Italian international defender Davide Astori

Basingstoke Gazette: Davide Astori, right Davide Astori, right

SAINTS are again being linked with Italian international centre half Davide Astori.

As the transfer window re-opens tomorrow, Saints could be set to make fresh efforts to strengthen their defensive options.

The lack of real quality in depth in that area has been exposed in recent weeks following spells out of the side for first choices Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte.

Jos Hooiveld has made a couple of high profile mistakes leading to goals at Newcastle and at home to Tottenham.

And Maya Yoshida also failed to make the most of his chance when he played in the 3-2 home loss to Aston Villa.

Indeed, Saints have not lost at home this season when Fonte and Lovren have lined up together.

Astori, 26, has been a regular for mid-table Cagliari in Serie A this season.

Unfortunately this is just the start of things!
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely want us to sign either Astori or Kouyate (Latter now not available til end of season) and would definitely prefer either of them over Hooiveld or Maya for a regular first team slot.
The problem is, with our money and top 10 position, we are going to be linked with every man and his Mum over the next month.
On top of that, because we're "only Southampton", we'll also see the media reporting the exits of: Schneiderlin, Shaw, Lallana, J-Rod, Ward-Prowse, Ramirez, Osvaldo and even the inevitable "Lambert to West Ham" story!

As exciting as the window can be, we need to assume that we won't be bringing in or selling anyone, unless MoPo & Lord Cortese prove otherwise.

the manager has said that he fees that he is OK with what he has so cannot se anyone coming onto the side in Jan his should give a chance for are academy to come through. That not a bad thing can see us going down this season and cant see s getting top 6 so it would be good to get the academy lads their chance and blood them in ready for next season

I have to disagree with Maya Yoshida, he played as Cb against Cardiff City, in his first appearance in months and he defended well, his forward passing was a bit sloppy but given the severe lack of game time, that is understandable.

I think Yoshida is incredibly under-rated, last season he went from sloppy defender to a pretty solid CB in his partnership with Fonte and that's coming from a side in the Eredivisie, he did very well in the second half of the season as Nigel Adkins started turning strings of defeats into strings of draws and some wins.

And yet even after three months of no appearing on the pitch, he replaces Hooiveld and all of a sudden Saints get a 3-0 clean sheet away to Cardiff, they begin to look like the Saints defence from back at the start.

Time to give players credit where it's due and hopefully Yoshida can only get better from here on out with more game time.

It would make sense to try and sign the Cagliari defender now if we want top 6 this is the kind of player we need to get hold of.Perhaps a new goalkeeper also although I think this is less likely.

I think we will only sign 1 player in Jan and this is the guy. We could really do with him and don't be suprised to see him join. A quality defense looks to be coming to Southampton. I think we could do with another winger but i don't think we will get this as Southampton will not panic buy or spend lots of money in this transfer window. Better wait till summer when prices are less inflated.

Please don't get me wrong, I really like Yoshida! However, if we signed either of the 2 I mentioned they would automatically be in front of him. They are both very strong defensively.
