There is a chill in the air but no hint of any rain and the sun shining.

The players are out completing their warm up routines.

12:54pm

Phil Jagielka in today's programme...

They (Saints) had a great start to the season and they'll be looking to get back on track. I got to know Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez at the last international and they are three good lads as well as three very good players.

Phil Jagielka

12:53pm

12:51pm

Saints striker Jay Rodriguez hopes to continue his recent form against Everton and keep himself firmly in England's World Cup plans.

The 24-year-old, along with Saints colleagues Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, was included in Roy Hodgson's squad for the November friendlies against Chile and Germany, winning his first cap against the South Americans at Wembley.

Since his Three Lions appearance, Rodriguez has scored five goals in his last six Premier League outings, including a brace in the 3-0 Boxing Day win over Cardiff.

And the former Burnley forward hopes his club performances can keep him on Hodgson's radar.

"Obviously it is an honour to play your country and a confidence boost when you do get selected," he said.

"It was a nice taste and you obviously want more of it so hopefully I just can just carry on improving and maybe you never know.

"All you can do is keep your head down at your club. You work as hard as you can to try and improve as a player and hopefully then it pays off.

"I have said to myself I want to improve on last year and hopefully I can carry on improving. I want to score as many as I can in each game, so hopefully I can."

Basingstoke Gazette: Jay Rodriguez - one of three Saints players picked by England.

12:48pm

Roberto Martinez has been glowing about Saints in his pre-match assessment.

The Everton boss said: "Southampton are a terrific side, I think one of the best sides in this competition.

"We know we are going to have to be at our best but we want to get rid of the feeling we were left with after the previous game.

"It is a great opportunity to be on the pitch again.

"We don't want to find an excuse - the opposite. We always look at ways we can overcome the difficulties and perform in a manner that can get us a positive result."

Goalkeeper Joel Robles, who won the FA Cup under Martinez at Wigan last season and then followed him to Everton, will feature with Howard now suspended.

Basingstoke Gazette: Celtic have made an official approach for Swansea boss Roberto Martinez

12:37pm

Three changes for Saints.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Kelvin Davis is back in goal with Paulo Gazzaniga dropping out.

Dejan Lovren returns to the centre of defence alongside Jose Fonte after recovering from the illness that sidelined him for the game at Cardiff with Maya Yoshida the man to drop out.

James Ward-Prowse comes in for the suspended Morgan Schneiderlin. Steven Davis will drop back into the central midfield role alongside Jack Cork with Ward-Prowse is the attacking trio behind Rickie Lambert.

Still no return for Dani Osvaldo.

12:34pm

TEAMS

SAINTS: K Davis, Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Cork, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez, Lallana, Lambert.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Reed, Ramirez, Gallagher.

EVERTON: Robles, Baines, Alcaraz, Distin, Coleman, McCarthy, Barkley, Oviedo, Osman, Naismith, Lukaku.

Subs: Springthorpe, Hibbert, Heitinga, Jelavic, Mirallas, Pienaar, Stones.

Ref: Mark Clattenburg

12:21pm

Teams will be announced in just over ten minutes but we are expecting changes for Saints as players return to fitness.

Among the changes could be Kelvin Davis resuming between the sticks in place of Paulo Gazzaniga.

Definitely out is Morgan Schneiderlin who is serving a one game ban after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season at Cardiff.

Artur Boruc, Victor Wanyama and Guly do Prado are all out injured.

12:19pm

Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Echo's online coverage as Saints take on Everton at Goodison Park.

Mauricio Pochettino's team picked up an impressive Boxing Day win at Cardiff while their opponents today lost at home to Sunderland.

I think Davis in for Gazza is the right choice against Eveton. We'll need a shot stopper. Quite content for Chambers to stay in at right back. He's deserved it. Ward-Prowse should make a fair understudy for Schneiderlin. All in all, not a bad side to put out.

We'll misMorgan pulling strings in midfield, but other than that - with the defence almost back to full strength, and Chambers really taking his chance and keeping Clyne out, we should get something from this game.

Now all I've got to do is persuade the local Sports Bars that no-one is really interested in Newcastle - Arsenal, and that Saints are the team to watch. Or, alternatively, the local hotel which is cr*p for watching football so no-one goes there, and I can usually get them to play what I want as at least that way they sell some beer.

Good feeling about today ... Everton are now due their wobble, while ours is hopefully over.

Try leaving out the negativity until after the game, then maybe you can have a field day. Looking at the squads I feel we have a good opportunity to get a result, but everyone needs to be on song today, Everton are no mugs, they are, where they are, on merit.

Could the FA done a "quiet" suspension?
That aside, I think we are all behind the Saints (as normal) and really hope for three big points.
A good side out but I always worry when I see Clattenburg in charge (late penalty decision anyone?)

I know you are a long way away, but if you were able to watch the games, you will always see Shaw ahead of JWP when we pick up the ball and attack, it is a risky ploy but has always worked in the past, just unlucky for JWP on this occassion, one mistake and we are paying for it, sounds like the linesman in our attacking end, first half should be wearing blue, he has given us nothing.

It's about fans being more consistent.

The point is, as Dan says, any little slip by Fox (or Guly, Gazza, Jos, Yos, Ossie or Ramirez) and some people will pick up on it in an instant. Those same people NEVER throw dirt at certain other players, such as Luke.

Most of us, including both of you (Dan and Osprey), don't go in for unsaintly things like throwing dirt at any of our players.

Let's not argue... doesn't matter if it was Luke or JWP. Credit where it's due, it was a good goal, nobody's fault this time.

It's always good to see a team making a good response after going one down, Mush. If not, there's a danger that it soon becomes, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0.

Ask Alister Cook, he'll tell you. :-)

It was Luke.
I haven't got the benefit of a stream and am only going by the Solent commentatory and they have repeated several times that it was JWP that missed the vital challenge, was Luke at fault before or after, have to wait for the replays, nothing we can do about it now, just keep the faith and wait for an equaliser.

luke has to get back quicker.. shouldn't have been up to james.. not worried it's isolated from him but making the point about the fox bashers... cracking game
I do see all the games and do see that, coleman baines clyne chambers fox and shaw all do and get caught out sometimes.. I say again though was making the point about fox not picking on luke. trouble is in a game like this one it is often the match. Lets hope some of the forward work pays off with a couple.. they are working hard enough to get at least a point from this.

Meh, I didn't expect a result today unfortunately. Everton are great at home and we needed (a) a full strength team and (b) to be on top form to do the business.

Neither was the case today unfortunately and it's just a shame we let them in within a few minutes of equalising. We needed to target their keeper more as well and should have tried a few more shots than we did.

Too many defeats lately but then there's the injury / illness problems and the sheer strength of most the opposition that we've faced.

Let's hope we can turn Chelski over on NYD, that would be a real good start to the new year.

I thought Gaston was absolutely brilliant today scored a wonder goal and made countless opportunities. Saints would be absolutely mad to let him go, instead they need to find hmi a berth in the first team he is that good. I suspect that this is just about clash of temperaments and MoPo needs to be big enough to deal with it encourage this young man because this is a serious talent. You just cant keep someone like that on the bench its criminal. He is capable of making something happen out of nothing and you definitely need that if you want to get to the top.Yes we lost but what a game, Saints have come a long way in 12 months they just need to keep improving, incidentally saw nothing wrong with Gaston s workrate all in all a great performance and one of the best in the team.

We should have had that penalty and taken home the draw that our game play fully deserved!
Clutteredbrain was never going to give a penalty to an away side unless he really had to, so we were always going to have to do it the hard way.
I still get very frustrated when we have heaps of possession, don't score and end up losing to teams that score breakaway goals, like Villa and Spurs did...

Gutted . We conceded so soon after getting level as I thought we were good for the draw - perhaps even the win.

It does seem that the top sides just have the edge on us in that relatively they have slightly more firepower (so can win games) and stronger defense (so can avoid losing). Clearly we are not that far of though and we will give Chelsea a game..

Last year, it was a penalty. This year, it wasn't. Either he's slowly learning how to judge what handball is or he's being inconsistent. I'll go for the latter.

Being positive, and given our record at Goodison, we're all disappointed to have lost - unluckily - to a breakaway goal and some 'imperfect' refereeing.

Who's in black (or flourescent greenish yellow) for the Chelsea game?

no, none whatsoever I made a point of watching him particularly. Not one misplaced pass and the fact is after he came on Saints were far more threatening because up to that point we didnt really put Eveton under the cosh. Gaston s presence in the final third gave Saints much more bite.
The trouble with a lot of fans is that they want work horses, but you need players with match winning ability and Gaston is one of them. he will have given MoPo food for thought today, and, id be surprised if he will be going anywhere. He was brilliant.Besides Cortese wont even entertain it. I am pretty sure Gaston has been told to earn his place, hence why he took his shirt off, dont blame him for that, his performance was mud in the eye for all those who have needlelesssly criticized him

No shame in losing to Everton at home but from all the comments from those who managed to see the game it appears we deserved something out of the game but yet again despite enjoying higher % of possession and more shots off / on target, which is almost the norm, we finished second. Good to see Ramirez scoring and playing well. It seems that what we are short of is is just a little luck - particularly from refereeing decisions!!

Unlucky today but we have to be able to control our emotions after a goal. Too many players were bombing forward just thinking about that second goal when we lost possession cheaply. We got caught massively short at the back.

He played well, scored a beautiful goal (or benefitted from poor goalkeeping, if you believe the press), but "uncounted" is probably more accurate than "countless".

Not a bad summing up. I guess those of us who managed to watch provided some pretty good feedback :)

As for Gaston, I generally agree with Montecristo. He came on and almost turned the game. He's not yet the finished article but will keep improving if the club and fans stick with him. Giving him a run of games means dropping someone, though. So, when all are available, which of the players who are ahead of him should that be? Lallana? Rodriguez? JWP? Davis? If none of them, then JWP and/or Davis will need to replace Cork, Schneiderlin and/or Wanyama.

Or, we sell some players, keep just 11 decent players so that they are always picked (when fit) and struggle even more when they aren't. (* note to some posters, I'm NOT being serious here - honest!)

Or, we rely on MP to rotate players while keeping them fresh, hungry and involved.
