Lovren set to return

Basingstoke Gazette: Dejan Lovren Dejan Lovren

Saints are expecting Dejan Lovren to be fully fit for the trip to Everton tomorrow.

The centre half was missing at Cardiff on Boxing Day, after picking up an illness.

However, Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful that the Croatian international will return to the line-up at Goodison Park.

The same is also true for Nathaniel Clyne, whose fitness will be assessed ahead of kick-off, as he completes his recovery from injury.

“We have Lovren that will probably be fully fit again,” said Pochettino. “Clyne as well. So we will have to assess their fitness.”

The Saints boss added: “We had a last minute illness of Lovren, which ruled him out of the game.

“We will have to assess our injury situation.

“There is players such as Clyne and (Dani) Osvaldo who might be coming back and then there is longer time injuries, such as (Victor) Wanyama and Guly (do Prado) and (Artur) Boruc who will definitely not be back.

“When you get a win you get good energy and that speeds up the recovery process of some players.”

If Clyne does not make it back then Calum Chambers should continue to deputise at right-back.

Maya Yoshida, who played at Cardiff, will also be on standby.

Pochettino seemed less certain about Osvaldo’s return after sustaining a kick in training last week, although he is unlikely to be keen to alter his attacking line-up much anyway after the performance in Wales two days ago.

One player who he will definitely need to replace is Morgan Schneiderlin, who picked up his fifth yellow card of the season during the match at Cardiff and now faces a one-match ban.

“We always want to have our quality players, our best players, on the pitch,” said Pochettino. “In this case we won’t have him, but there will be another player that will perform the same, or even better, than him.

“It’s a shame we lose certain players because they are banned or injured, but we have other players available to us that will do equally as well.”

For Everton, Tim Howard and Gareth Barry will both sit out the clash with Saints at Goodison Park due to suspension. Howard's ban comes after the goalkeeper was shown a straight red card in the 1-0 home loss to Sunderland on Boxing Day, while for on-loan Manchester City midfielder Barry the supension is the result of him picking up his fifth booking of the season in that game.

Forward Kevin Mirallas was substituted at half-time during the contest having felt unwell and it remains to be seen whether or not he or Toffees full-back Leighton Baineshas recovered from his broken toe.

A win is definatly possible with a near full strength defence tho Gazza will have to be in form Everton have some players who can really hit the ball.Ill be content with a draw ofc very happy if we can grab all 3! I reckon Saints will score one at least so depends on the defence losing morgan and wanyama for same game might just be enuff to swing it evertons way.The win at cardifff was so so important with these next two tough games to come.

and what are your thoughts for your visit of Northampton?
Seems to be a lot of your players getting minor injuries.
This is poignant because of Poch's comment that injuries tend to clear up quicker when teams are winning.
Seems true to me.

Be happy with a draw, but at the same time Everton without Howard, Barry, and possibly Baines and Mirallas..we should feel, as the top half side we now clearly are, that we've a chance to get another big away win on Sunday.
Our injury list has been awful, but one by one getting better, so makes that Cardiff result very pleasing indeed. More of that type of clinical finishing tomorrow please!!

Yeah. 3 chances 3 goals and then I'd say we completely took our foot of the gas to hold something in reserve for Everton.I think it's time to finish off the toffees just like I have in my tin of quality street.

I think my mate had the best solution to our goalkeeping problem. We replace Gazza with a large blowed up Santa, change the outfit, at lease we would have some chance to save a goal bound effort. Garza is a league one player at best, with Davis not being any better. What if Borac is unable to play until next season, how many more silly goals would we let in. There is not any team in the top two divisions we could sell the backup rabble to. The best we could wish for is they could play at portsmuff. Please get a top goalkeeper and stop messing about.

As the transfer window is shut how do we go about your request, btw Kelvin is better than you suggest and as Gazza was not even in the first team untill Kelv got injured we know he still needs developing. If you went to games you would know the Kelv is a good stopper it is his distribution that is questionable.

Credit where it's due mate, Gazza put in a good performance at Cardiff, still a bit flaky here and there but with time and confidence that flakiness will disappear. He'll be a good keeper in time. Remember he's 3rd choice. If you went to the Spurs game you will have seen a dire performance by Hugo Lloris and he's their 1st choice!!

Lovren Set to return

Who are the 'Lovren Set', why are they making a come back and have they released a Christmas single?

I guess it's a musical riddle for Retford.

In other news, Everton's a tough place to go, our record there must be a bit shabby and they had a fair bit of bad luck in their last match. So, I'd take a draw right now.

Oh, and this is what I said just before the Cardiff match .....

Tottenham 3 goals, villa 2 goals Newcastle 2 horrendous errors we got away with etc etc. Forget the Cardiff result, looked what's happened today there. We need to be better than Palace, which is where our form has been since Borac has not played. apart from left back we have options if key players are injured. Gazza had let more in than the one save he has made. Against Tottenham we scored 2 good goals and let in 3 very poor ones. Garza cannot command a flee circus let alone a six yard box!

Clue is in the last 2 lines. Is your mate with the "great idea" a skate as well!
FYI. Gazza is worth more than the entire pompey outfit, and improved against cardiff.
It's not ideal having our 1st & 2nd choice keepers out,and Poch has not had the luxuty of bringing Gazza through when ready like he can with outfield players.

This is poorly argued. You are assuming that there are world class or potentially world class goalkeepers out there who will be willing to join Saints and be happy to understudy Artur.
Of couse, it's possible we might obtain a better goalkeeper than Artur, but looking at the number of established international goalkeepers Alex Feguson (who was a pretty good judge of players) brought to Old Trafford and failed to live up to expectations, it's by no means a certainty.
Further, I seem to recall that Artur wasn't that popular on this site a year ago.
Recall Matthew (not Le Tissier) 7: 1-3, "Judge not, that ye be not judged."
By the way, your comment was unworthy, especially in a season of good will.

Cant see how Gazzaniga gets blamed for some shocking defending in the Spurs game. He may not be as confident or assertive as Boruc but that comes with time and Prem experience. He has only had a handful of games and in my opinion is becoming more solid between the sticks , he appears to be comfortable taking crosses under pressure and has made a few decent saves. As Gok famously says "its all about the confidence". Was it Nigel that signed him? and didn't Nige used to play in goal?

Hope I'm not tempting fate, but it would seem that our injury crisis could be over soon. Boric is in light training, Clyne fit, Wanyama not too far away I guess. Looking at our games into Jan/Feb, there is no reason to doubt that we can go top six again. 3+ points from the next two games would do very nicely indeed!

I am not a Gazza fan but come on those that are going to Goodison Park lets get right behind the lad. The win at Cardiff must of given the lad a tremendous boost and now with a possible stronger back four in front of him he might turn out too be like Peter Shilton ??.
Would very much like to see back four , CLYNE LOVREN FONTE SHAW
midfield JWP CORKY ADAM JAY
upfront Rickie with young Sam Gallager (is that how you spell it??)
COYR 'S 3 POINTS OR AT LEAST A DRAW.

It’s looking better by the minute. So we are just about half way through the season and we’ve had our dip / injury crisis that every club experiences. It’s a good time to take on Everton and we should not fear Chelski. I hope and expect the second half of the season to be as fantastic and enjoyable for us as the first half.

Know what you mean about Gazza, Bob. But to be fair he was chucked in at the deep end, With little or no experience of the premier league. You can only gain good decision making with games played in the first team. He has got better and he will learn as he gains experience and confidence. Some of the so called "top keepers" in this division have dropped some right rickets so far this season Loris for our second goal against Spurs for example, But I agree with you about getting behind the lad until Artur is fit again. So lets hope he has a blinder tomorrow. COYR

Why Clyne? He's been out for a while and will be rusty whereas Chambers has been very impressive. I'd ease Clyne back in in the FA cup. Lovren yes without any doubt.

Jeez! If that's the way you encourage our up and coming youngsters to step up to the first team, we might as well close the fkin academy! Try watching the games, even Artur would have conceded a few more with that defence in front of him.

Any of these posters care to name a goalie that we should buy?
The international goalies of England,France,Czech
,Belgium,America,Hol
land, etc are playing for the teams above us.
Our goalie is the Polish first choice.
Below us are several other international keepers and several of those I have mentioned do not retain the full backing of their manager.
Every goalie in every team in the Premier league has had at least one howler this season and several have been dropped or threatened with the drop.
Our 3rd choice keeper is still young and still learning, our 2nd choice keeper is probably going to move into coaching sooner than reclaiming 1st choice.
Our 1st choice has the best goalkepping record in the Prem at the moment so shall we wait for him to come back?
Easy to be negative? just as easy to be positive!
Some posters do not want to realise how lucky we really are, the preference is to malign rather than support.
Support the Saints, you know it makes sense.

If we decide Gazza isn't up to it and Kelv is ready to move to coaching, which I think he will be great at, then Kasper Schmeichel is worth a look at. He single handedly stopped us winning at Leicester in our Championship season and at 27 or so is coming of age as a goalie. He's featured for Denmark this year too.

Gaza is doing his best under very difficult circumstances. Take any team and replace a few players with third choices and it's pretty obvious that they will be weaker. He hasn't yet dropped any clangers that resulted in goals. Get behind the team ffs. And if Hoover plays likewise. As somebody has already said he was first choice a lot of last season as was Maya, another player who will come good. Fact is we're having a great ride this season and we're not yet in a position to have squad depths like Chelski and the Manc sides.

Follows the quote that any team can beat any team.
Hull are probably the nearest thing to a surprise in the league positions at the moment.
Apart from them every other team is losing and winning the requisite amount of games , just not against the teams they expected to.
Bottom 6, 5 of them have chaanged manager during the season and expect at least one more club to follow suit. Norwich or Villa. Don't think WHU will sack Sam until the end of the season or when it is too late, far too nice a board.

Personally I think Gazza is stepping up to the plate as well as he can and we shouldn't be knocking him for trying his best.
He is still learning and there was definitely a difference with his performance on Boxing day to the ones before Christmas. Still has a lot to learn yes but the lad is really really trying which is just great as far as I'm concerned.

Having a better defence in front of him is going to help of course - might give him a really good confidence boost which is only going to help.

I am not expecting Saints to be a lower half table team, that said we need to build out our squad. Agree to let youngsters to develop you have to play them, goalkeeping is a different proposition. Gazza does not move off his line, when a cross comes in he cannot decide what to do, when the first goal came from a cross against Tottenham! A good keeping would of come out and taken the cross. By sitting on the line you are expecting the back four to deal with it, rather than taking control of the situation. Second the same, a six yard box error. When the ball is kicked back to Gazza he thumps it first time, rather than taking a touch first. The Leicester goalie made the difference like Shilton used to do for us. If we are going to keep our talent and grow we need an excellent goalie. Gazza maybe OK in Three or four years time, but right now we have to take this seriously and take action
