Saints quartet in fitness battle to make Cardiff trip

Basingstoke Gazette: NATHANIEL CLYNE NATHANIEL CLYNE

Saints could get a welcome festive boost as their injury crisis looks set to ease slightly over the next week.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino will run the rule over Kelvin Davis, Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne and Dani Osvaldo on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

That is in the hope they might be fit for the trip to Cardiff on Boxing Day, which kicks off an important run of three Premier League games in less than a week.

Jose Fonte is touch and go to be fit to play after having to make do with a place on the bench in the defeat to Tottenham as he continues to nurse an injury problem, while Maya Yoshida is in a similar boat.

Only Artur Boruc, Victor Wanyama and Guly do Prado are categorically ruled out of the festive games as Saints try to get back to winning ways after six matches without victory.

Pochettino said: “We need to assess how some of our players are doing such as Dani Osvaldo, Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne and Kelvin Davis.

“On the other hand, other players such as Artur Boruc, Wanyama and Guly are out indefinitely as they are still recovering from their injuries.

“That is one of the main reasons we need all our players fit. We need to recover our fully fit squad.

“Jose Fonte had a slight problem, as did Maya Yoshida.

“It’s been a tough moment at this time because some of our players are having some personal problems that perhaps haven’t been talked about, and overall we are having a tough moment with illnesses and injuries.

“That has not made it possible that even though we have played well, and our performances have been good, the results have not come our way.

“We need to recover 100 per cent our energy, be fully focussed on the task in hand and get back to winning ways.”

Pochettino was reluctant to discuss Osvaldo’s absence after the loss to Spurs, but offered an explanation when pushed on it yesterday.

“He received a knock on his right leg during training and he had a slight problem,” he said.

“We thought he would be back but the analysis showed he wasn’t fully fit. We will see if he is fully fit for the next few games.”

Pochettino is trying to take the positives during a tough run for Saints and pointed out that some of the youngsters getting unexpected first team game time at the moment will be better for the experience.

“We are fully aware that players need to be 100 per cent competitive to play well and they need to get experience,” he explained.

“We all know what the project here at Southampton is of young players and young talent. They need that experience and that playing level and that will be very important for their futures.

“Right now it is a very tough moment for us but we are learning a lot.

“We are fully aware that these tough periods of illnesses and injuries can happen and we need to face it in a natural way, we need to be calm about things.

“We are aware things haven’t gone our way and that results lately have not been good.

“But we need to be calm and work 100 per cent to invert the situation.”

This appears to answer a few queries, even if not too specific.

Please let us have Shaw and Clyne back. Chambers was a solid replacement at right back, but I'll take our first-teamers every time.

I think the high line pressing game is having an effect on our players.
It is a massive ask to have them pressing every ball when we have lost it.
Earlier in the season we had up to 3 men challenging the opposing player who had the ball, this inevitable gave us back possition.
It also gave us many plaudids from the media.
Some said it was fantastic and new fresh style of football.
Some of them said we would not be able to physically keep it up.
Although generally I find the media tend to knock Saints for no reason on this occasion they may have had it right.
We have suffered a number of injuries all very close together, added to that the majority of our team on Sunday looked extremely leggy.
They didn't look as if they could press the game.
The 3 exceptions IMO where Adam and Corky and Chambers.
Adam is playing out of his skin and the England call up has been a great thing for him but will he also succomb to the rigors of the pressing game and spoil his chances in the summer.
I hope not.
Lets hope Pochie get a possitive response from the players over the holliday games and that we get some players back.

I hope Mauricio Pochettino's comments have put many doubters minds at rest including highly rated Commentators Dave Merrington and Adam Blackmore who we love that he was breaking up a winning side by playing Jos and Fox etc, I respect Pochettino and cannot believe he would disrupt a side for sentimental reason, it would be nice that we all knew the reasons why some first Team Players are on the bench but this article said by the Manager explains his reasons, it does frustrate everyone as to why he's seems to of left out crucial Players but he knows his Players and won't risk those who may not make 90+ minutes of play, I believe Pochettino does it to protect his important Players from doing more damage to there already perhaps minor injury but he can risk then for the second half and for the opposition for tactical reason, the winning momentum is broken and it's hurting everyone, I watched and heard Rickie's comments and thought he was guarding his loyalty to the Manager and the Team but his body language showed he doesn't like what's happening and knows the reason that certain Players are not good enough for the Premiership and it's letting the Team down, also he realises that it's very unfortunate and unusual to have 3/5 first Team Players out for so many games, we all prefer Kelvin to Gazza so hopefully he'll be back for Cardiff but Gazza needs to be loaned out to play every week to gain his confidence and get more experience anywhere from the Championship to the 2nd Division, the Saints are due for a win so we all hope there will be 2 in a row, Cardiff and Everton where I will be on Sunday COYR

I want properly fit players back in the team not ones who are going to get crocked again and make the problem worse

Tis the Season of Goodwill and I won't have a bad word said against Hoover, for all his faults, he has never given less than 100% support to the Team, and I for one am grateful for his good works. Please take note of the complimentary comments to me by hedge end bob and OSPREY SAINT.

So to you George I raise up not a Glass but 2 fingers for your cynical comment and I hope you find time to comment on the Saints rather than worry about a persons Grammar however I will treat your comments with the contempt they deserve.

Please not how I spell Grammar, will spelling be the next fault finding you have in mind?
Don't spoil it, I get amusement out of correcting errors, never take me seriously, I only do it to tease, you wouldn't want to spoil my fun would you? Anyway I drop more clangers than anyone..... All the best Malcombe, don't let the Neggies get you down, concentrate on getting us three more points in any way you can think of, except cheating of course! That ain't Saintly.

Most of our pressing start up front and those players are not injured. I think we would have been fine as long as we had one of the old heads in goal. It all comes from gazza inability to organise and direct. I'm sure Hoover would not have scored that own goal if he had confidence in what was behind him. And the first goal is coming all the way from the sideline, with so much time it has to be on gazza for not coming out.

yes please merry xmas
Hooivelt had a great game at arsenal. It all has to do with the confidence in the back 5 starting with the goalie. And also with Morgan and victor out the back has been left exposed a lot more than earlier in the season.

Happy Christmas to Southampton fans around the world. Lets remember that we were in league 1 a few years ago. We are now 9th in the Premier League. We are having a slight blip because of injuries etc but we all know how good we are!! We will soon be playing that high pressing game and winning games when we get some players back from injury. Remember Pompey are in league 2!! We are the top team in the south and we are developing. In a few years time we could be top four. Not yet but we could be in a few years. If we finish 8th I would be over the moon. Come on you Saints!

Tis the Season of Goodwill and I won't have a bad word said against Hoover, for all his faults, he has never given less than 100% support to the Team, and I for one am grateful for his good works. If you feel the need to slag him off fair enough if it gives you pleasure, I get no fun out of the attitude of some. We all want success, but if means nastiness, leave me out.
Let's be realistic. It is OK to be happy with what one had once done for the Saints. It is another to accept the fact that one is not talented enough for the current squad. Enough with the romance here. Giving 100% is mandatory. That should not be a "pass" for poor play. His 100% has resulted in 4 own goals now? How many assists for the opposition. I'm sure he is a nice guy and I'm sure he tries. However, bad things happen when he is on the pitch. I want success. I want to win and continue to improve. I also know this is a forum for expressing opinions. If you don't like them, don't read them. Honestly, bad things happen when Hoover is on the pitch. Dating back to last year. My suggestion is to ship him.

My suggestion is to ship him.[/p]
I say keep him, there might be an outbreak of the Black Death, if he survives he would be quite useul.[/p]
Now that is amusing. You should have learnt that in school!

So to you George I raise up not a Glass but 2 fingers for your cynical comment and I hope you find time to comment on the Saints rather than worry about a persons Grammar however I will treat your comments with the contempt they deserve.
