Fans want Saints to sign keeper

Basingstoke Gazette: Fans want Saints to sign keeper Fans want Saints to sign keeper

Saints fans want to see the club sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

More than 2,000 votes were cast by supporters in a poll conducted on dailyecho.co.uk asking in which department they would like to see the club strengthen next month.

The focus was most certainly on the defensive side of the team as some 34 per cent wanted to see Mauricio Pochettino bring in a new keeper while 30 per cent wanted a new defender.

That is despite the fact Saints have conceded the joint fewest goals in the Premier League season.

Only Everton can match the record of Pochettino’s men in letting in just 15 goals at an average of 0.94 per game.

For all that thought supporters have seen Saints’ resources stretched recently because of injuries.

In the goalkeeping department Artur Boruc is out with a fractured hand while veteran stopper Kelvin Davis has been sidelined with a back injury.

That has led to 21-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga going between the sticks with 20-year-old Cody Cropper on the bench.

At the back Saints have suffered injuries to Nathaniel Clyne and Jose Fonte.

Away from the goalkeeper and the defence the next most popular position to strengthen was the striking department, with 23 per cent wanting to see some additional competition brought in for the likes of Rickie Lambert and Dani Osvaldo.

Only seven per cent felt the need for a midfielder, probably not surprising given the fantastic strength in depth Saints have in that department.

Some six per cent were happy that the squad did not require any further strengthening in January, a time when prices are notoriously inflated for players of established first team quality.

Pochettino has expressed that belief himself in the past but the recent spate of injuries which has seen many first team stars in the treatment room may have altered that slightly.

The Saints manager has insisted that the club are not going to worry about whether to bring in any new faces until January arrives and the window actually opens and they will firstly concentrate on important top flight games against Tottenham, Cardiff and Everton.

The poll was right next to the heading, and it said 5% goalkeeper? 2nd lowest? What a bizarre story?

We have the best midfield in the country, I also believe we have the best left back, right back and center half in the country, we also have one of the best keepers in the country but we do need better cover. The strikers are trying very hard but I would love to have a 25 goals a season striker.

I have had so much stick here from a Spurs fan... Sunday is a MUST win game!!!

When i first saw Yoshida play i have to be honest i thought he looked solid. I think it may have been the 4-1 home win over villa last year, i certinally thought he was a better than hoover, he seemed more comfortbale on the ball. Like with most players he might need more game time but after his reecent proformances that dont seem likely. Do we have any good CB in the youth team? I Know we have great prospects at LB and RB..

There is no doubt that in order to stay in the top half of the table and make a challenge for the top we need better cover for Boruc and Shaw and a top centre half to play alongside the magnificent Lovren. We are a very good side but injuries expose lack of top quality strength in depth in defence.

There's not much wrong with the squad we have. The stats speak for themselves. Why all the panic? How unlucky to have first and second choice keepers out. (Don't forget KD was player of the season two years ago. A good keeper is a good keeper whatever the league.)
Most of our problems, have been silly mistakes. At least Cork doesn't keep getting caught in possession like Wanyama.
The only thing I would have liked personally, at the start of the season, is instead of Osvaldo. Give Chelsea, whatever they wanted for Lukaku. He would be perfect to go with Lambert.

Casillas wants to move to the Prem, with Arsenal or Citeh being his preferred choices. It'd certainly give the move for Hart a boost if he ends up there.

The headline is "FANS WANT SAINTS TO SIGN A NEW KEEPER" -- whose fans are we talking about here? Adam Leitche's? The Echo's? Mine?
How many of the 2,000 claimed votes were actually cast by people who follow the Saints? There is no indication. For all we know all 680 of those who say they wants Saints to buy a new 'keeper are either football agents and/or Echo employees.
By the way, if anybody at St Mary's is reading this, I am available on a "free" and I've asked my Mum for goaly's gloves for Christmas. It's over twenty years since I tried by boots on, but I dare say they still fit.

So why don't we pluck a keeper from Sunday league footy? If he's good in that league he'll be good in the Prem right? Having Artur is fine until he makes a clanger or gets injured. I think we do need another keeper as Kelvs is 37 and Gazza has yet to convince me in the 2 spells he's had in the prem.

Why Victor bash when talking about keepers? Give the guy a chance he's only 22 and his first season in the prem.

I feel like Osvaldo will be a 25 goal a season striker in the future. He's just starting to show us what he can really do. we just have to hope he doesn't get any suspension. This is now the perfect time to play spuds and should get a win.

As strange as it sounded at the time, he had not signed a new contract towards the end of last season and it had been picked up on the Sky Sports News website. I (jokingly) claimed that he would be coming to Saints as Kelvin's replacement, either in the Summer break or this January.
There's still time for him to prove me right! Lol

Stick with what we've got but look to the future. A promising young keeper and a good young central defender if available at bargain prices. We have more
young players coming through so don't demotivate the ones we have by buying expensive "stars".

Am a saints fan and voted for keeper. Why? Gazzanigga is not up to the task (yet), Davis has not shown that he's close to as good as Boruc and anyway he is getting into his golden years, and Boruc is a star (this year) but drops clangers. It's goalie's gloves, by the way. Unless maybe you meant Guly's gloves.

From a scientific basis, this survey was too flawed to be seen as in any way relevant, becuase there was no option "we don't need to strengthen" - i.e. no control group. I didn't vote because I don't think we need to strengthen this window, and I think it's at least possible that more people thought the same than supported buying a new keeper.

Echo, should you carry out further surveys, I suggest you contact me first to validate them. I'm available on a free transfer in January ...

Simply because, there are no top keepers in Sunday league. If there were, then a big club would snap them up for little money.
I agree about Gazza, but he's there as third choice. So not bad when you consider that.
I'm not bashing Wanyama. Just saying Cork is the better player. Sometimes VW is way behind the snap passing of the rest of the team. As you say, he's young and could turn out to be a real bargain.
Also, by the way, Peter Shilton, was 41 when he won his 125th cap and 47 when he retired from League football. Buffon is 35 and still a top keeper.

I think we are mostly on the same wavelength here, but being realistic what are the chances of finding a suitable candidate? If Poch is of the same mindsight, don't you think he has plenty of feelers out and if there is a target GK out there, they will move heaven and earth to get him.
