Victor Wanyama has narrowly missed out on being named Kenya’s player of the year.

David Owino was voted as the winner after the world’s biggest football website, Goal, asked readers to vote for their favourite players.

The defender has had a great season with Gor Mahia as well as the Kenyan national team.

Owino made his mark for Kenya last year during the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda where he helped the Harambee Stars to reach the finals.

At club level he has been a pillar in Gor Mahia’s defence, featuring in all matches and also playing a crucial role in helping the side end an 18-year wait by winning Kenya Premier League title.

Owino said: “I feel greatly honoured to be ranked as the best in Kenya.

“To be in the same level with the likes of Victor Wanyama is something special for me.”

Wanyama, who is currently sidelined by a hairline fracture in his leg, was shortlisted for the award.
