Dodd's Saints have the top level experience ahead of FA Youth Cup derby with Pompey

Basingstoke Gazette: Jason Dodd Jason Dodd

Saints have the distinct advantage of top level experience on their side as they take on Portsmouth in tonight’s FA Youth Cup tie at St Mary’s.

While Pompey have to make do with taking on sides such as Northampton, AFC Wimbledon and Crawley in the Youth Alliance Under-18 South East League, Saints’ youngsters are turning out each week in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.

That means Jason Dodd's side are playing against some of the cream of the nation’s academy stars from teams like Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and Fulham.

Should they win through their south group then they could even take on the might of Manchester United or Manchester City.

It’s been a bit of a mixed season so far for Jason Dodd’s team with their 15 games having yielded six wins, five defeats and four draws to leave them currently seventh in the south group.

They are the division’s great entertainers though, having an equal defensive and attacking record, scoring 28 and leaking 28 in their 15 matches.

To underline how exciting they can be they have already had two 3-3 draws in this campaign.

Pompey, meanwhile, are doing very well in their league.

They have 11 wins and just two defeats and two draws to their name.

While Saints beat Leicester at the weekend to take a bit of form into the game, Pompey bring a superb winning record to St Mary’s.

Their side, who boast former Pompey stars Andy Awford and Paul Hardyman on the staff, have eight wins on the bounce in all competitions and have lost just one game since August.

While Saints enter the competition at the third round stage, Pompey have already had to win through two previous rounds.

The first round was a one sided encounter as they thrashed Wessex League club Moneyfields 12-0.

In the last round they edged out Barton 1-0 at Fratton Park.

It's good to get the youngsters landing skate (or fingerlings I believe young fish are called) at an early age. As an extra incentive I've e mailed Jason Dodd (via Mrs Wilson) to let him know that the National Federation of Fish Friers have agreed to my request that tonight's Saint man of the match will automatically win their prestigious Young Fish Frier of the Year Award.

Probably be even easier for the Saints kids if they put all the first team in!

I appreciate your personal obsession with everything skate, forgive me if I don't go to that extreme, I had a quick look at The News site, and was amazed at the incredible infighting that is already trying to undermine the new management team, there are some decent Pompey fans but they seem to be outnumbered by the downright nasty brigade. As far as tonights game is concerned I repeat what I said, let us see the best team win, the youngsters need support, not the petty rivalry which can leave a nasty taste in your mouth. Let's get back to the beautiful game and lose the dross, Skates as a club are no threat to us now, and I cannot see them being so again in my lifetime.

Would have liked to go to this one... been on hold for an hour and 10 minutes with Some bloke hanging up on me every 20mins!

Looks like i wont be able to take the boy for the Christmas game either.

Saints are playing some lovely football at the moment. But Im getting really peed off with everything else being so poor. I can put up with the fact that a kit for a 6 year old works out at £93, and the fact the beer is pish (if you can get one) but its a bit of a stretch when you can even get through to buy a ticket.

NB: Website "Queue-it" not working..also stuck at work

This is the first round of the cup for us, I don't think that's quite the 'big stage', that may come depending on how far we progress.

Just want to throw this one out there - We have some fantastic young players but would you prefer as a Saints fan to see us as:

A. A team of mostly English players mainly from the Academy but usually finishing top ten with a good cup run.
B. A squad of overseas stars but top six

I know there is a happy medium but for instance, buy a 6/7 million foreigner in the transfer window or give Gallagher / Seagar a go.

Come on you kids tonight.

The website looked like it had froze when I tried to get my extra tickets for Chelsea, but I stayed online and got in. The Queuing numbers don't change. Mine was 1232 right upto when I got through. It did say that you only have 10 mins to complete the transaction once in, but it took me about 5 attempts to select the seats I wanted for my sons of 7 and 18, and thankfully got straight back in after the first hour long wait.
It turns out we can't buy an under 11's tkt without a full paying adult tkt.
I rang the Ticket "Helpline" whilst trying and was told that because my Season Ticket is 'discounted' it didn't count as a full paying adult! And I would have to buy an under 17's ticket instead!
Bloody disgusting! I bought my brother a seat (manure fan) just so he can watch some exciting football for a change

I agree, but why did my brain/eye co-ordination thing have to re-read your post? At first, I honestly thought you had written: 'Lets hope they do for all our skates'?

I suppose it's the same part of the brain that reads a word like 'ripple' but automatically says, 'nipple'. It happened to me once at school when I was asked to read aloud in class. Straight faced, I read, 'As the Royal family arrived in the theatre, the audience greated them with a nipple of applause.'

My classmates broke out with a spontaneous twitter and I felt like a right tit.

Hang on, is that last W in the right place?

What a vile and disgusting little man you are, regardless of the so called rivalry between the two clubs these are under 18, in other words, children, so let them enjoy themselves without abuse from key board warriors like you.

NB: Website "Queue-it" not working..also stuck at work
The website looked like it had froze when I tried to get my extra tickets for Chelsea, but I stayed online and got in.
Jesus and ButtyIoWSaint, I think the Club needs to start remembering who their customers are and who pays their wages. It is absolutely disgraceful that last season's away history was removed since the Arsenal game, so it doesn't matter that fans who went to nearly all the away games last year, but only a couple this year are struggling to get tickets for Away games - how can that be right?
When is the Loyalty points system going to kick in?
On another track, why couldn't the Club delay the kick-off for last week's game against Villa when they were fully aware of the traffic problems? Arsenal and Tottenham delayed the kick-off for their games against Saints due to traffic problems. The game was not being shown on Sky so it wouldn't have made any difference if the kick off had been delayed. But no Saints show no consideration towards their fans, who in some cases missed 25 mins of the game.
Hope you both managed to get tickets for the Chelsea game.

This is the first round of the cup for us, I don't think that's quite the 'big stage', that may come depending on how far we progress.
I agree Tony, I hope the crowd don’t give the junior skunts too much of a hard time.
All these kids are trying to do is make a start in their profession.
They are not responsible for the dishonest disgraceful excuse and embarrassment of a football club this Poopey rabble have perpetuated on a world stage.
Please everybody don’t label their kids as cheating Poopey scum skunts like the rest of them ... That would be harsh.
We wont its a kids game after all. But we wil still have fun with there fans though. I can see it being a tough game and proberly a high scoring one.
A bit worrying, I have just heard that the Pompey fans have been allocated seats in the Kingsland, with their fans perchant to urinate on the seats I hope they (the seats) get disinfected before the next home game.
'perchant'?
Sorry "Penchant" didn't notice the typo, I was of course referring to one individual rather than all of them of course!

That would be harsh.[/p]
We wont its a kids game after all. But we wil still have fun with there fans though. I can see it being a tough game and proberly a high scoring one.[/p]
A bit worrying, I have just heard that the Pompey fans have been allocated seats in the Kingsland, with their fans perchant to urinate on the seats I hope they (the seats) get disinfected before the next home game.[/p]
'perchant'?[/p]
Sorry "Penchant" didn't notice the typo, I was of course referring to one individual rather than all of them of course! I hope Saints smash the facking skates all the way back down the M27 with a humiliating defeat that saps their confidence so much we find them working in Dixons next year.
What a vile and disgusting little man you are, regardless of the so called rivalry between the two clubs these are under 18, in other words, children, so let them enjoy themselves without abuse from key board warriors like you.
No, not as you describe, we have a long memory though, if anyone is vile and disgusting it is the Pompey fan that urinated on the seats and then boasted about it, he did of course apologise, but only so that he could be let in to watch another game at St. Marys, when it comes to being vile and disgusting, we are streets behind.

I understand what you’re saying, but two wrongs don’t make a right.
Each week I hear loudmouth, overweight parents scream at their children during youth games, trying to relive a past they never had, these are the same people who talk of smashing kids all the way down the M27.
Sad little middle-aged men.

Great result for the young SAINTS though.

I think you are confusing physical violence and what actually happened on the pitch, what we wanted, is what we got, teaching our opponents a football lesson on how to play the game, there has been a long history where at times the Skates have had the bragging rights and they have given as much as they are getting now. For the moment we are in the ascendency, forgive us for enjoying it while it lasts.
