MATCHDAY LIVE - Chelmsford City v Basingstoke Town

This live event has finished

  • FULL-TIME - Chelmsford City 1 Basingstoke Town 0
  • Town down to eighth in Conference South after losing in Essex.
  • Rob Edmans scores the winner for Chelmsford with 10 minutes to go.
  • Town's goal-less run moves on to four games.

That's all for today folks. By my reckoning, Town have fallen two places to eighth in the Conference South table with that defeat.

Join me again at Bournemouth Poppies on Tuesday night. Hopefully I'll have some Town goals to report on!

Elsewhere, Reading lost 2-1 at home to Bournemouth, while Southampton held Manchester City 1-1 at St Mary's.

Basingstoke RFC lost 33-17 at Barnes.

Another game without a goal for Town. Not a great game or performance from the visitors, who need to find a solution to their problems in front of goal soon.

Reaction to follow.

Chelmsford City 1 Basingstoke Town 0

That should have been game over. Two Chelmsford players turned down chances to shoot, passing instead, while Edmans was denied by the chest of Wells.

Wes Daly's ball in causes problems, the hosts letting it bounce, but Matthews is just beaten to the ball.

Town went close just before that change, Neil Barrett heading a corner wide at the far post.

SUBSTITUTION - Chelmsford City - Tom Davis on for Kieran St. Aimie (86 min)

Graham sees another deflected shot fly narrowly wide, while Town just about smuggle away the resulting corner.

Chelmsford City 1 Basingstoke Town 0 - Rob Edmans (80 min)

A simple ball over the top catches the Town defence out and while Edmans cannot make the most of the chance, being forced wide, the visitors never recover.

Edmans feeds Nicolau and his cross picks out St. Aimie at the far post. He heads back across goal and ROB EDMANS is there to coolly slot home.

St. Aimie curls in a shot from the edge of the area but it's always going wide of the far post.

Nathan Smart tries an angled shot from 25 yards. It's always going wide but isn't too far in front of Williams.

SUBSTITUTION - Chelmsford City - Rob Edmans on for Luke Callander (74 min)

Close for the hosts. Graham lets fly from 25 yards and Wells is a spectator as the shot takes a deflection and fizzes narrowly wide.

Williams takes it but it's a terrible effort, flying miles over the bar.

Jay Gasson gets pushed in the back and that's a free-kick in a central area, 30 yards out.

SUBSTITUTION - Basingstoke Town - Andrew Jenkinson on for Simon Dunn (69 min)

Two good blocks prevent Town players getting shots on target.

SUBSTITUTION - Chelmsford City - Bagasan Graham on for Joel Ward (64 min)

SUBSTITUTION - Basingstoke Town - Jordace Holder-Spooner on for Shaun McAuley (63 min)

That's a great chance for the visitors.

They go close when McAuley's low ball is only just cut out before I it reaches Williams, but an even better chance comes from the resulting corner.

Goalkeeper Pentney flaps at the ball in and it drops for Jay Gasson, whose powerful drive from 10 yards flashes just wide.

Chelmsford have a good bit of pressure, forcing a couple of corners, but Town defend well and withstand it.

That's a great turn from Williams midway inside the Chelmsford half. He makes ground into the area and gets a shot away but Pentney is down to save comfortably.

There are 561 people here today. Town have started the second half well but are struggling in the final third.

Chelmsford get the second half started. No changes at the break.

The players are back out ready for the second half. Will we see a goal?

Elsewhere, Basingstoke RFC have lost 33-17 at Barnes.

It's not good news for Reading either. They trail Bournemouth 2-0, while Southampton are holding Manchester City 1-1 at half-time at St Mary's.

Not a great first half entertainment-wise as the sides cancelled each other out. Town probably had more possession, but the better chances fell to Chelmsford on the break.

Chelmsford City 0 Basingstoke Town 0

Jay Gasson loses the ball in a dangerous area and Chelmsford are through, with two against one.

Callander takes the ball on but chooses to shoot rather than passing for an unmarked Ward and his effort is weak, making it easy for Wells.

That's great control from Shaun McAuley, but his shot is well blocked by his namesake in the Chelmsford team, Rory McAuley.

Good defending from Green to stop Ward getting on the end of Calander's through ball.

Gasson's long ball finds Williams and Town have men over. Unfortunately, Matthews opts to shoot from distance rather than passing, and the shot is way off target. A wasted opportunity.

Manny Williams - Basingstoke Town

Pentney struggles to control a back-pass and Williams challenges for the ball, but his foot is up and he catches the Chelmsford goalkeeper. Unlucky to be booked though.

Another dangerous cross is only cleared as far as Lock 25 yards out. He attempts a curling shot but it's well wide of the Town goal.

That's a dangerous low cross from Long, but Gasson again does well, clearing at the near post.

That's another big chance for Town. Daly's cross finds Matthews on the edge of the six-yard box but he can only divert the ball wide. He should have done better there.

A great chance for the hosts. Green is caught out trying to play offside and Ward is in behind the defence down the right. His cutback finds Callander but the striker can only shoot straight at Wells.

That's a big chance for Town and Manny Williams. A slip in the Chelmsford defence allows him to get on the end of Daly's chipped through-ball and he's through, but he's unable to beat home goalkeeper Carl Pentney, his effort lacking conviction.

Chelmsford mount another dangerous attack, thanks to mistakes from Barrett, Daly and Smart, but Gasson is able to cut out Nicolau's cross.

Daly fires in a shot from 30 yards but he gets under the ball, sending it way over the crossbar.

That's nice football from the hosts but it ends with Sam Long firing well over from distance.

That's a real chance for Chelmsford new boy Callander. Again Nicolau caused problems down the left and his cross found the striker in space, but he could only volley over.

A good ball in from Nicolau forces Green to head behind, giving Chelmsford a corner. That's well delivered too, but Wells claims under his crossbar.

Town get an early cross into the box and that's why Matthews is in the side. He got up above the defence but could only head over. He'll be hoping he gets more crosses like that though.

Town get the game under way. Wes Daly must have lost the toss as Town are shooting into the sun in the first half.

The players are on their way out. Here we go!

Basingstoke Gazette:

Yon can see how far the stands are from the pitch here. Makes it difficult for an atmosphere to build, though the temporary stands behind the goals do help.

Whoever wins the toss will be keen to shoot right to left as we look. The sun is setting behind the other goal and it's very bright.

Listened to OK Computer by Radiohead in its entirity on my way up here. Left me feeling remarkably chipper. Best album ever.

Basingstoke RFC must have kicked off at 2pm. They trail Barnes 14-10 at the break.

The teams are just leaving the field following their warm-ups. Time for the team-talks.

Town will be looking to end a run of more than five hours without a goal today.

With that in mind, I'm slightly surprised that Robbie Matthews has kept his place in attack. Jordace Holder-Spooner looked sharp when he came on the other day and is capable of creating something out of nothing.

The rugby must have kicked off at 2.30. Basingstoke currently trail Barnes 14-7.

Chelmsford have had a dreadful start to the season, something that led to them sacking manager Dean Holdsworth a couple of weeks ago.

He has been replaced by Mark Hawkes, who joins from Heybridge Swifts and won his first game here last week, Chelmsford beating Farnborough 3-1.

It's a cold afternoon in Essex but it's nice and bright. I saw a billboard for Sugar Hut on my way up here. A real highlight.

Elsewhere this afternoon, Basingstoke RFC are away at Barnes, Reading host Bournemouth and Southampton are at home to Manchester City.

I'll do my best to keep you up to date with all three, while live updates from the Saints game can be found by clicking here.

Chelmsford City: Penney, Long, Redwood, Lock, McAuley, Smith, Ward, Hughes, Callander, St. Aimie, Nicolau. Subs: Brayley, Edmans, Davis, Graham, Forecast.

Chelmsford's new striker, Luke Callander, prolific for Heybridge Swifts, goes straight into the team.
