YOUNG Basingstoke and North Hants cricketer George Metzger was presented with the Hampshire under-11 Batsman of the Year award at the Hampshire Cricket Board boys’ junior age group presentations at the Ageas Bowl.

He finished third overall in all the age groups after scoring 517 runs at an average of 51.7.

The Costello School pupil was also was presented with two match balls on stands, which were engraved with his two centuries, made against Surrey and Berkshire during the summer.

His maiden century of 102 came in a 68-run victory over Surrey. It took the young batsman 119 balls to reach his landmark – an innings that included 16 fours.

He enjoyed a third-wicket stand of 99 with Max Watson as Hampshire reached 209-7.

His second knock was even better against Berkshire, as the opener carried his bat and scored a career best 111.

He stayed at the crease for all 40 overs of the innings and faced 109 balls, hitting 13 fours in his ton as Hampshire made 221-3.

It proved to be far too good for Berkshire who were bowled out for 31.

Metzger is already back in training for next summer, spending three hours every Sunday at The Ageas Bowl with the under-12 squad.

He also has three hours on a Monday evening with Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams for specialist batting coaching, before doing some strength and conditioning work with Mike Main.

During the winter he will be playing indoor cricket with the Basingstoke and North Hants under-13 and under-15 sides.
