FREYA Davis ensured that host club Basingstoke and Mid Hants has something to celebrate at the third Hampshire Cross Country League fixture of the season, which took place at Popham Airfield last Saturday.

A total of 722 runners descended on the airfield for the event but Davis was the star of the show as far as Basingstoke and Mid Hants was concerned.

Competing in the under-17 women’s race, Davis improved throughout the race before snatching the lead with 250m left to claim an excellent win.

Jermaine Mays was the top Basingstoke man, finishing third in the senior race.

There were also podium finishes for Lucy Wildash, who was second in the under-15 girls’ race, and Rebecca Poole, who continues to improve, coming third in the under-13 girls’ event.

Jenny Helyar was the fourth runner home in the under-20 age-group, one place ahead of Charlotte Chalwin, who was taking part in her first race following a long-term injury.

Gemma Wildash was fourth in the under-17 event, while Maddie Deadman finished eighth in the under-15 race and Zoe Frost was ninth in the under-13 event on her first outing for the club. Brendan O’Connor finished fourth in the under-20 men’s race.
