  • Rickie Lambert comes in for Dani Osvaldo
  • Steven Davis steps in for Morgan Schneiderlin
  • Christian Benteke dropped to the bench for Villa

9:47pm

After the final whistle Osvaldo squared up to a Villa opponent and was pulled away by Pochettino as tempers flared between the two teams.

9:39pm

Saints have slumped to their first home defeat of the season tonight, going down 3-2 to Aston Villa

Saints twice equalised in the second half through Jay Rodriguez and sub Dani Osvaldo after trailing at half-time.

But Fabian Delph's 80th minute winner sentenced Saints to a surprise third successive defeat.

8:17pm

The goal that separates the teams...

Basingstoke Gazette:

8:16pm

Villa have been toying with three/five at the back this evening as well and now both sides are matched up in that formation.

Interesting tactical dual between the managers being played out here

8:14pm

DOUBLE CHANCE - 27 MINS

The tactical change lamost pays immediate dividends as Clyne's hanging cross from the right is met by the head of Rodriguez but Guzan dives to his right to make a good save.

From the corner Lovren's header from inside the six yard box looks goalbound until it hits the back of the legs of Rodriguez

8:12pm

Big tactical switch from Pochettino as Saints go to three at the back.

Yoshida, Wanyama and Lovren are the centre halves with Clyne and Shaw as wing backs

8:06pm

The Lallana chance blocked by Vlaar perfectly captured...

Basingstoke Gazette:

8:03pm

SAINTS 0 ASTON VILLA 1 (Agbonlahor 15)

Saints lose possession midway inside the Villa half and one low pass totally undoes them.

Gabriel Agbonlahor turns Yoshida and Villa are in two on one.

Agbonlahor opts to go alone, cuts inside Lovren and dinks the ball past Gazzaniga.

8:01pm

CHANCE - 14 MINS

With not much else on Jay Rodrirguez fires in a shot from 20 yards. It moves in the air and dips late and Brad Guzan just gets his body behind it, allows it to hit his chest and it bounces away

7:55pm

Interesting that Villa are going with two up front tonight.

Possibly a reaction from the Chelsea game at the weekend which changed at half time when Jose Mourinho followed that tactic and denied Saints the time to play out from the back.

That said, Villa are not Chelsea and Saints have started brightly tonight.

7:52pm

CHANCES - FOUR AND FIVE MINUTES

First sniff of a chance for Saints after four minutes. Nice turn in the area from Lallana but his shot is blocked by the diving challenge of Ron Vlaar.

Moments later Lallana's chipped cross from the left drops onto the cross bar and bounces away to safety.

7:45pm

The game is underway

7:44pm

The teams are out on the pitch ready for kick off

7:39pm

The players have returned to the changing rooms ready for the game.

The traffic problems are obviously taking a toll as the stadium is still fairly empty.

7:08pm

There is quite a bit of traffic around Southampton this evening which is apparently delaying people on their way to the ground.

Saints have offically said there is no plans to delay the kick off beyond 7.45pm as scheduled.

6:54pm

Four changes for Saints from the side that lost at Chelsea. As expected, Paulo Gazzaniga replaces Artur Boruc in goal, and Steven Davis comes in for the injured Morgan Schneiderlin. Elsewhere, Dani Osvaldo drops to the bench to make way for Rickie Lambert, while Maya Yoshida comes in for Jose Fonte, who is also among the subs. For Villa, the big news is that striker Christian Benteke - who hasn't scored in his last seven matches - is dropped to the bench.

6:52pm

THE LINE-UPS

SAINTS: Gazzaniga; Clyne, Yoshida, Lovren, Shaw; Wanyama, S Davis; Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Rodriguez; Lambert.

Subs: Cropper, Chambers, Hooiveld, Fonte, Cork, Osvaldo, Gallagher.

ASTON VILLA: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, Luna, El Ahmadi, Westwood, Delph, Agbonlahor, Kozak.

Subs: Steer, Lowton, Albrighton, Sylla, Tonev, Benteke, Weimann.

Referee: Jonathan Moss.

6:39pm

Basingstoke Gazette: Paulo Gazzaniga

With Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis out injured, Paulo Gazzaniga is set to start in goal tonight. The 21-year-old hasn't started a game since December 1 last year, when Saints lost 1-0 at Liverpool. He made his first appearance since then when he came on during the 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. He has received strong backing from his manager, Mauricio Pochettino, who says the Argentine has his "full confidence" and has improved a lot in the last year.

6:26pm

Aston Villa squad news: Paul Lambert will check on striker Andreas Weimann's fitness ahead of Aston Villa's trip to St Mary's. The Austrian experienced a tight hamstring in Saturday's goalless draw with Sunderland, but is hopeful of being fit enough to feature tonight. Aside from long-term absentees Charles N'Zogbia, Ggary Gardner and Jores Okore, Lambert has no other injury problems.

6:26pm

If you're getting ready to head off to the game tonight, be warned about heavy traffic in the city tonight.

Full details on this story.

6:25pm

Saints squad news: Goalkeeper Artur Boruc will miss the clash against Aston Villa because of a broken hand, which could sideline him for up to six weeks. Kelvin Davis is also unavailable, so Paulo Gazzaniga will deputise having come on to replace Boruc in the 3-1 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday. Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin (groin) will miss out, while Gaston Ramirez is also not yet match fit along with defender Danny Fox and Brazilian midfielder Guly do Prado, who is a long-term absentee after undergoing knee surgery.

6:19pm

6:18pm

Hello and welcome to this evening's blog, covering the Premier League contest at St Mary's between Saints and Aston Villa. Mauricio Pochettino's men have lost their last two matches, but after away defeats at Arsenal and Chelsea they will be confident of returning to winning ways against Aston Villa. Saints possess the joint best defence in the division and are yet to lose at home this term, although they face a Villa team who have lost just once on their travels. Stay with us for build-up, team news and match updates.

Strasbourg Saint says...

Greetings from chilly Strasbourg.

I think MP's done the right thing. Logical to bring SD in rather than Cork, given the playing time that SD has had from the bench this time and that he's never let the side down. Also, with a forced change in goal, the less he messes with the outfield, the better. Question is, does he put JWP or SD alongside Victor?

I do agree with the above. As UpSaints says, we have more depth than last year and, indeed, more experience.

It's a 'should win' game but no Premiership games can be taken for granted. Dani to score in a 2-1 win.

Hi - Tony in Liberia is now Tony in Rwanda, from where I will be cheering the boys tonight. I could watch the Chelsea game, but not tonight ... think we'll win, but then I always do ...

With Norway Saint safely at home, balanced out by Lawro predicting a win, we're relying on Confusious' correct aplication of lucky charms to see us home - that and the fact that Benteke & Weinmann aren't playing.

LUckily I don't believe in luck, though, which is lucky as we haven't won since I came to Rwanda ....

Bu66er!!!!!

Bad LUCK with the UNLUCKY spell in Rwanda, Tony!! So, it's your fault, not Norgie's!!!!

Mind you, you're LUCKY to be somewhere hotter than here.

I have a link on First Row Sports but it's a bit intermitent and I missed the goal. It's enough, though, for me to realise that Yos is in for Jose, which I hadn't notcied earlier. It rather bu66ers up my point about not changing too much when you have a forced replacement in goal. Oh well, I hope MP knows what he's up to.

Me too. But if Villa aren't really pressing that makes Victor a bit pointless. Plus Corkie offers more from a creative angle so let's see how this goes. We should certainly calve out some chances.

Blame goes on MoPo for the first time.
Fonte should have started,
Yoshida was just terrible, was Hoover injured?
Wanyama (unless injured) should have stayed on,
Cork (fault for second) should have gone to right back when Clyne went off.
The tough work starts now.
Still, if you had said we were 8th after 14games I would've bit your arm off!
At least the Poofew didn't win again :-)

Defensive stability seems to have suddenly vanished - any particular reason? Add that to continuing to not be able to convert overwhelming superiority into goals and you have recipe for decreasing confidence and increasing frustration - no coincidence our yellow cards are suddenly building up. Seems to me we urgently need to stabilise the bus before all the good work gets undone.

Totally agree.

Yes, Mo Po could have done a few things better but we clearly didn't deserve to lose tonight.

No blame to anyone tonight as the team did enough to win the game twice over. Villa caused us problems with their pace on the break so hats off to them, they did the homework and got some luck. We looked too open at times and the least assured at the back, but the stats of the game are laughable so hopefully just a freak result. Still 8th so still happy days.

First league match I've missed this season. Most of the comments seem to be focusing on defensive problems. I think, if we're going to worry, we should be wondering why, in spite of all the possession and number of shots, we didn't score more.

That said, I don't think we've got much to worry about really.

I blame the crowd tonight, late getting there, no atmosphere, no noise except when we scored, I recall just one chant from the Kingsland which otherwise was like a morgue. We certainly seem to be getting plenty of luck, all of it bad. Victor on crutches, Clyne crocked, Dejan probab:y concussed, and that challenge on Luke could have finished his career and only yellow? Then Oz losing his cool, when we get it wrong we certainly do it well. At least we don't expect a result on Saturday so anything will be a bonus. JRod was our Man of the Match his header was the only thing I really enjoyed, although you have to admire Villas third, that was a cracker.

Injury was my worse fear and here we are......people were giving thumbs down when i said .. if we miss one or two from our starting XI, especially from MF and the back...we become vulnerable.....i hate when i am right...

despite our style of play we never conceded more than one goal on the counterattack before..... but tonight we let 3 in....

Those outside our starting XI need to raise their. game.....and this is their chance to show what they are capable of...

City game wasnt the game i would of wanted them to be trialed for .....

But we have no choice i guess .

lets hope they recover quickly......

it also give us the fan an idea what players are vital to the team....

I was surprised that the kick off was not delayed. It took us 1.5hrs to drive 9 miles to the stadium tonight, arrived after kick off and still had to wait outside for a mate to give him his ticket. Fan buses were still turning up whilst I paced up and down ffs. I reckon thousands were stuck in the gridlock and missed out on the pre-match lubrication as a result.

Sorry can't agree with that. Yosh at fault for the first, Dejans scuffed clearance gave the ball away for the second and the central defense backed away from Delph giving him chance to shoot for the third. Somebody should've taken him out. It may have brought a yellow card but that is what defenders do. Fact is we scored two and would expect to win.

I agree... the striker did their part and scored twice.. the defense suppose to do theirs too.....

from the first 20mins I could tell Villa only came to defend , play long balls and hope for a draw ....they packed their defense and send 2 up in front....they had almost 8 players defending....our defense should of been aware of that....

that explains 77% to 23% possession..but they got lucky our defensive error gifted them 3 goals and left with all 3 points ...

Surely we deserved to win the game by far.....

I am not looking forward to seeing this defense against Man City on Saturday. Three shots allowed and three conceded. With the way City are playing I can see us getting a drubbing like Spurs and Norwich. And that's not being pessimistic, it's being realistic. With tough games against Everton, Newcastle, Spurs and Chelsea to come, we have to face the very real prospect of getting nothing for the rest of this year. I'm sure we will pick up some points here and there, but it's going to be a big ask.

Yep that's the way I read it too mate. Not the end of the world though. There'll be games we are absolutely crap and will end up taking a point or three when we don't deserve to. Over a season it balances out. We were mugged three times tonight, providing no more players are seriously hurt we're still on track.

I agree, Saints lack strength in depth. However the fringe players do need some Premier League playing time so they know first hand what to expect at that level, because injuries and suspensions will kick in as the season progresses. I'd buy a decent winger and full back. Saints missed Morgan last night, a player who goes about his business quietly and effectively. Is a like when Nick Holmes didn't play, Saints never did well, Nick was a player equally at home at full-back, midfield, centre-back or sweeper. We could do with his like again.

Morgans game is based on intense work rate, Steve Davis did a good imitation last night, he ran his butt off and someone said he made more passes than the entire Villa team combined.

Yes I was aware of the traffic problems that "late" remark was tongue in cheek, on Radio Solent they were getting bucket loads of tweets requesting the game be delayed, they said that as all the Officials, all the Safety crew and everyone needed for the game to go ahead were there, it would start on time, too bad that the supporters were going to miss the start, I was lucky being prewarned, routed around the problem and got there with time to spare, but it is a poor attitude when the fans are treated as unimportant.

JRod was our Man of the Match his header was the only thing I really enjoyed, although you have to admire Villas third, that was a cracker.[/p][/quote]I was surprised that the kick off was not delayed. Don't blame the fans....blame the sh1tty traffic flow system that our city employs! YS P1ssed off.
You don't have to watch, no doubt there is some Christmas shopping to do?
Without our injury woes, all of the games you mention were going to be difficult, they are going to be even more of a problem now, we will just have to ride the waves and hope for a change of fortune in the New Year, it is always a roller coaster ride when you support the Saints, that will never change. Genuine supporters will look forward to the next upward run, doom and gloom merchants will enjoy the next downward rush. Whatever enjoy the ride or be prepared to get off.

I am 100% behind the team, but there is still room for concern. All part of being a football fan, especially one of Saints. :-)

Being behind the team does not however mean I can't attempt an analysis of our strengths and weaknesses and make predictions about forthcoming games. I doubt even the most optimistic/deluded Southampton fan can be thinking our patched up team (how many players are potentially going to be out this weekend?) is going to sit comfortable against the top-scoring side in the division. Man City destroyed Spurs recently, another team with an excellent defensive record. I'm just expressing my trepidation that this weekend could be our turn. Every team gets turned over at least once a season and so far we've avoided it. Maybe not for much longer. I'm not being a doom-and-gloom merchant, I'm being a realist. I love the Saints. I stay up to watch them every weekend (got up at 3.45 to watch the Villa game last night) and enjoy every minute of it. Doesn't mean I can't find faults. I'm not blinded by fanaticism.

As for Xmas shopping, not so much. It's not a holiday in China and only exchange cards and Skype chats with my family back in Southampton.

Time you did some Missionary work then. If not into Christianity at least you can encourage some to be Saints fans.

I'm working on it. I've already persuaded my father-in-law to follow the Saints and have promised to take him to a game if he ever comes to the UK with me. He doesn't speak a word of English though, so it might be a bit asking him to join in the chants. I've ordered him a shirt, too. My wife even watched a game with me the other week and was amazed that we have 18 year olds playing for us. She also loved the story of Ricky Lambert rising up from the lower leagues to make the England team. Taxi drivers often know the team if they follow the Premier League and are usually complimentary. The conditions are set. All we need to do is sign a Chinese player and we'll out Man Utd Man Utd in the far east.
